In poems it is essential to be a creative writer. The author uses many techniques from from exposing deep thoughts to giving humorous jokes throughout the sentence. As a human being, we may have difficult times in understanding what is trying to be said. We may agree or disagree depending our viewpoints on life. One of my Favorite poems is “The Ballad of Sue Ellen Westerfield” by Robert Hayden. My favorite poem is the type of poem that has some history and confusion. When getting the audience confused, it makes them want to know more and reread the whole passage again. Hayden’s poem is a fresh new opening that brought an old dimension, his creativity to open the minds of others and look back to the past.

In “Identify”, Julio Noboa Polanco uses foreshadowing and tone to show, illustrate, and communicate the theme of the poem. The theme is that being an ugly weed, or different, is better than being a pretty flower, or normal. Would you rather be a pretty flower, or any ugly weed?

He is disgusted with the way the gentlefolks are handing themselves around nature, and the narrator wants the reader to picture in their mind the image he is seeing to illustrate his disdain for the gentlefolk in a different manner. Then along with that sees them as cold hearted and conscienceless, as the gentlefolk are able to do such things, as the speaker says,”...without a pang of remorse…” In lines 25-26 the narrator says,” Is its colour any prettier, or its scent any sweeter, when you do know.” This sarcastic statement illustrates that by cutting up a flower to comprehend what it is made of , no person can gain appreciation for its simplicity, being its colour and scent are natural. West and Noboa Polanco, use imagery in a similar fashion and use similes and symbolism in contrary fashion to display the journey to a sense of self that both the characters in the poem and novel take.

This story is about a person who just wants to be free and they don't care about what they look like even if they are a tall and ugly weed . They would not want to be a pretty flower trapped in a flower pot

The most important phrase in “Identity” by Julio Noboa Polanco is “Tall, ugly weed” because it supports the character’s identity. The poem is about the character wanting to be a “tall, ugly, weed” rather than a beautiful flower. Pretty flowers are cramped and only allowed to do certain things, while weeds are rugged and do whatever he want to do.

The poem ¨Identity¨ by Julio Noboa Polanco is written from the author's perspective and metaphorically they’d rather be an ugly weed than a pretty flower. I believe the theme of the poem is individuality, because even if the flowers are pretty, they are no longer freestanding individuals and are now lost in a crowd of doppelgangers. The authors goes on describing that even though the weed is ugly and shunned by everyone, it is free to do as it pleases knowing that it is not chained to others but an individual.

The most meaningful phrase in the poem “Identity” by Julio Noboa Polanco is “I’d rather be” because the narrator uses it to express how he doesn’t want to be like everyone else and just wants to be himself no matter what other people think. The poem “Identity” is about how he would rather be free, unique, and alone instead of bunched up, and touched by people . In the poem “Identity”, there are several instances where it is shown how important “I’d rather be” really is. One of these instances, is when it says, “I'd rather be a tall, ugly weed, clinging on cliffs, like an eagle wind-wavering above high, jagged rocks.”

She varies from the free verse written style due to the unique variation that the writer uses. The writer explains varies because, unlike a regular free verse that explains a story, this poem only present examples, with the repetition of the word “but”. The poem uses metaphors and imagery to explain and describe the conflicts the couples face. The speaker tends to speak in a modern-day diction and poem does not present a rhythm, and no particular structure. The speaker makes statements by using examples of different conflicts and that makes the rhetoric differ.

Kath makes the poem very personal by the use of words like I and we for example, she begins the poem by saying, “Look up, my people”. This makes it feel more tailored for whomever the poem is directed to. The poem also has a rhyming pattern of ‘not rhyme line’, B, B, C. Also, there is intertextual referencing to the ‘Dream Time’.

In the poem “Identity” by Julio Polanco the author utilizes symbolism to exhibit the theme of self acceptance. This theme is uncovered by using flowers and weeds to symbolize the writer’s self acceptance. The work of the extended metaphor reveals the idea that the author would much rather “live to feel exposed to the madness” than feel “admired” or “harnessed” like the flowers portrayed in the poem. (Polanco,3) He uses the aspiration of self acceptance through being attached to society (flowers) opposed to being free and independent (weeds).

Identity also is a theme that we see a lot in this poem. In this poem, the speaker experiences a huge life event of becoming a mother. During this time, the speaker had a lot of different thoughts and took her time on accepting that she was now a mother. After going through so many changes, she then was able to realize her true identity.
