Julia Zalewski, the founder of the Polish band, “Polskie Nadzieje” (Polish Hopes), has been an active member of the Polish People’s Home Association. We had patroned the band to perform at our functions as non-profit entertainment, cultivating polish traditions, musically and vocally. Julia’s most recent performance was during the 90th anniversary of the Polish Peoples’ Home Association, where previous presidents and members of the organization, Windsor councillors and politicians, were present. As a community, we are proud of the band, and Julia, as it’s lead performer and founder. We have received many congratulatory letters from members of various Polish organizations, solely for the effect the band brings during our celebrations. It
Marsha Ceniceros was born in Indianapolis, Indiana and raised up in Southern California. She is fascinated with fine art, and collecting antiques. Her artistic, poetic showmanship has won several awards in the past. Life demanded a few years off from writing due to a severe illness, during this time she opened a childcare business, where she has continued to struggle with recovery, and write a bit here and there. Katherine Tekakwitha, known to Catholics as St. Kateri Tekakwitha and called by them the “Lily of the Mohawks,” was born at Ossernenon (now Auriesville, New York) in 1656. Her mother, Tagaskouita, was an Alqonquin native American and a Christian. Her father, Kenneronkwa, was a Mohawk chief and followed traditional native practices. She received her given name of “Tekakwitha” (which means “she who bumps into things”) after a bout with smallpox when she was four damaged her eyesight and scarred her face. The epidemic ravaged the Mohawk population around Ossernon until 1663 and claimed both her parents and brother. Tekawitha was adopted by an aunt and her husband, chief of the Turtle clan. The survivors relocated to Caughnawaga (“wild water” in Mohawk) two miles upstream on the Mohawk river.

Annika Santos is fifteen and lives in Manchester Hills. She is the middle child; her older sister Erica is sixteen, and her younger brother Sam is seven. The Santos have lived in both McDonna and Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Florida before coming to Michigan. Annika currently attends Forest Hills Central High School as a ninth grade. Back in the day, culinary was small, but it wasn’t as big as it is as today. There wasn’t that many female chefs but mostly male chefs. Julia Child was born in 1912 but died in 2004 cause of kidney failure. On October 5, 1999 a multi-talented girl was born by two wonderful parents. She is from Montgomery, Al but currently lives in Atlanta, Ga. Her name is Victoria Johnson, but most people call her Vicky. She got one sister and three brothers; she’s the youngest. All of her siblings are talented, and her parents are too. Lillian Nageak, 79 years old, was born on September 15, 1938 at a small settlement between Barrow and Kaktovik known as Qalluvik. She lived in Qalluvik until she was eight years old. Lillian spent the rest of her life in Barrow, started a family and became very known in the community. Her and her husband Marchie started their own whaling crew and they taught their children and grandchildren whaling, hunting and fishing. I chose Lillian Nageak because not only she is my aaka; she is also my role model and the reason why I am continuing on with school.
