Juan Ponce de Leon was a Spanish conquistador who went on many expeditions to Florida around the late 15th century and early 16th century. Ponce de Leon started his exploration in joining Christopher Columbus on his second voyage to the Americas in 1493. They landed in Hispaniola and found a settlement to be destroyed and the sailors to be murdered. Columbus enforced a forced-labor policy and made the Natives rebuild the settlement and look for gold. In this voyage, Ponce de Leon learned many skills and tactics in which he would use in later voyages. In 1508, Ponce de Leon was sent to explore Puerto Rico and look for gold. He settled with 50 other soldiers in what is now San Juan and became the first governor of the eastern part of the country in 1509. The Spanish monarchs of the 16th century wanted to expand to “the new world,” so they got rich nobles who were willing to explore uncharted territory. These people are now known as conquistadors. They were the lucky few that got a new life away from all the troubles of Europe. Most of them went to conquer the Caribbean islands, some went to Florida, and some went to Mexico. Panfilo de Narvaez, unlike most, went to all of those places. The only information about his early life is that he was born of noble family. He went to Cuba; there he helped Spain conquer the Island, by commanding a small group of Crossbowmen. After that, he went to Mexico, by order of Diego de Velasquez, to take control away from the treasonous Hernando Cortes. Valesquez had him do this because he stole Mexico, not only from Spain, but also Moctezuma (Schneider 8). There he lost an eye and got captured. After 1-5 years (no two authors agreed) he went back to Spain.
A legion of horribles, hundreds in number, half naked or clad in costumes attic or biblical or wardrobed out of a fevered dream with the skins of animals and silk finery and pieces of uniform still tracked with the blood of prior owners, coats of slain dragoons, frogged and braided cavalry jackets, one in a stovepipe hat and one with an umbrella and one in white stockings and a bloodstained wedding veil and some in headgear or cranefeathers or rawhide helmets that bore the horns of bull or buffalo and one in a pigeontailed coat worn backwards and otherwise naked and one in the armor of a Spanish conquistador, the breastplate and pauldrons deeply dented with old blows of mace or sabre done in another country by men whose very bones were dust

Juan Ponce De Leon was born in Santervas De Campos in Castilla which is now known as Spain. In his youth he spent his time working as a Page for a Spanish Knight. As a Page he cleaned his Knights clothing, cared for his weapons and tended to his horses. In return he was taught a code of honor and learned the way in which he could be expected to behave as a knight.
As a major power in Europe, Spain set out to discover and colonize the Americas. Spanish conquistadors were sent out to travel to the “new land” and claim it in the name of Spain’s King, Charles of Ghent. Conquistadors is the key word here, meaning conqueror. Two skilled and powerful men were to decide who would be leading the expedition, initially to Mexico. Velazquez, unfortunately, was “too fat for such an undertaking.” This great quest was lead by Narvaez, an older and well-known Spanish Conquistador. The ideals of this, and all, conquistador is to overtake any people in the Americas forcefully. Spaniards and Europe as a whole was the major power, so to them everyone else was beneath them.
