Joni Eareckson Tada stood at the edge of the rock as she had done many times that summer. When she dove into the water, she felt her head hit something hard. An agonizing pain tore through her head. She felt as if her hands and feet were tied by ropes. As she rode in the back of the ambulance that afternoon, Joni thought that her injury was not serious. She had no idea how drastically her life was about to change. After several days, the doctors told Joni that she was now quadriplegic, which meant that she was paralyzed from the shoulders down. At first, Joni was in denial. She was seventeen and had her whole life ahead of her. Not being able to walk was definitely not in her plans. As time went on, Joni realized that the doctors were …show more content…
There she learned how to deal with her quadriplegia. Before the accident, Joni was an incredible artist. When her therapist told Joni that she could still continue drawing and painting, Joni did not believe her. Her therapist showed her a way to hold a pencil or paintbrush with her mouth. Joni was inspired and determined to produce art, despite her inability to move her hands. Her first works of art were far from being masterpieces. But, Joni was not discouraged. She continued to draw and paint for hours. Soon, Joni's art was breathtaking. People could hardly believe that she drew it with her mouth. She realized that this was God's plan for her. She was no longer depressed. She understood that her quadriplegia was not an accident, and that God used it to draw her closer to Him. She began signing her artwork with Joni PLT, which stood for Praise the Lord. Joni was truly happy. Her happiness did not depend on her ability to walk. Her story has become an inspiration for many people. It has been filmed into a movie, and hundreds of people gather at conferences to hear Joni speak. Although she lost her ability to move, she gained the most important thing in her life, her

The injuries he suffered were overwhelming, and so sudden that at first, he didn't know anything was wrong. Only when he tried to put weight on his leg did he realize the extent of the damage. He jokes about it today. "I found that I didn't have a leg to stand on," he chuckles. Most of the flesh on his leg was ripped away, leaving his foot attached only by the tendons in the back of his calf. Bones were exposed and the bleeding was profuse. He also suffered head and internal injuries.

Lexi was in a tragic boating accident that, unfortunately, resulted in the loss of her lower left leg. Countless amputees have given up on trying to become stronger and try to have a normal life again, but, however, Lexi decided she was not going to be one of them. It was extremely hard for her in the beginning because walking with prosthetics is a lot harder than walking regularly. Lexi had to work twice as hard to be able to get used to the prosthetics and try to live on with it to the best of her abilities. She kept working every day, going through physical therapy and other methods to be able to walk better with prosthetics. Although her life would never be the same again and would never be normal, Lexi made it her goal to try and get it to be as close to normal as possible. She was a very athletic girl before the accident and wants to go back to the sports she loves by training extra hard to make it to the Paralympics. Lexi also wants to become a physical therapist to help other amputees with their struggles. Ilene Kandy, developed a love for fitness early on. Born to a middle class family, in Savannah, GA, she knew from an early age that she wanted to be just like her father, a middle school PE instructor. Throughout her teen years, she enjoyed many successes both in long distance running and in gymnastics. Straight out of high school, Ilene decided to enlist and discovered a true love of weight training. It was only after returning to her home town, and giving birth to twin boys, that she began to realize the struggles of dealing with increased responsibilities and the wear and tear that pregnancy and child birth can place on a woman's body.

After watching my mother in a world of her own, I would eagerly pull out the sketchbook my parents had bought me and attempt to create my own “masterpiece” of scribbles and circles and lines.
