Life is how you take it. Within the book “Civil Peace”, Jonathan constantly shows a positive outlook on his rather “difficult” life. In reality, Jonathan shows compelling differences and similarities comparing to how to takes to his current life. He is trying to make the best out of a terrible situation he has been put in after the war. However, he shows with resilience and positive outlook, that even the “smallest” of the things (After war) can help to a better, more fulfilling life. First, Jonathan does show recognition of his bleak life in various moments throughout the story. For example, in the book it says, “ He had to be extra careful because he had seen a man a couple of days earlier collapse into near-madness in an instant before that oceanic crowd because no sooner had he got his twenty pounds than some heartless ruffian picked it off him” (Pg. 447 - P4). This quote from Jonathan shows that although he looks at his current life well; He still knows the dark bleakness of it like thieves stealing. First, Jonathan’s optimism is well accounted for when he says,” He had come out of the war with five inestimable blessings”. He had survived the civil war with 5 out of 6 of his family and there isn’t anything else anybody could ask for. Also, when he was able to keep his bike, it helped him get money as a taxi driver. Then, Jonathan found his old family house and was able to have a home. After the war, many other people didn’t not these luxuries and Jonathan’s optimism is well suited as he has gotten very lucky. Lastly, near the end of the book, Jonathan’s family was being threatened by thieves. However, Jonathan was able to make a deal with them and not lose any of his family.
