John Wayne Gacy was a very manipulative person. He lured his victims with the promise of construction work and good pay, and then captured,assaulted them, then eventually strangled them with rope (Lohr 4). In 1974, Gacy started a contracting business, He hired teen boys to work for him. Explaining to his friends, that hiring young men would keep payroll cost down (Lohr 4). In fact on December 11, 1978, Gacy visited Des Plaines pharmacy to discuss a remodeling deal. He mentioned that his firm hired “teen boys” at a starting salary of five dollars an hour (Egger 2). Mr. Gacy abducted Robert Piest from the pharmacy after Robert looked into Mr. Gacy offer for the construction job. Gacy is a very manipulative man. He made people in his town of WaterLoo think he is a sharp local businessman, and a children's entertainer on the side. By the late 1975, Gacy had joined the Jolly Jokers and had created his own performance characters “Pogo the Clown” and “Patches the Clown”. Gacy designed his own costumes and did his own makeup (Egger 2). Later, Mr. Gacy has became under suspicion after his fellow workers kept disappearing in 1978 after authorities investigating the disappearance of Robert Piest after police found out he was last seen with gacy (“John Wayne Gacy Confesses” 3). Immediately after learning of gacy's molestation crime conviction in Iowa, police searched his Norwood Park home. The noticed a strong stench coming from a crawl space but first thought it was sewage damage. Several items, including a store receipt, were later found at his home that linked him to piest and other young men who’d been reported missing (“John Wayne Gacy Confesses” 3). John Wayne Gacy decided to throw them off by saying that the horrible stench was just a bunch of moisture build-up in the crawl space because of a leaky pipe.
