Artists are unique in the way that they portray and depict the world around them. For example, two artists can create artwork of the same event that looks completely different from each other. This is true of the two artists John Taylor and Howling Wolf. They were meeting to sign a series of peace treaties between some native groups and the U.S government.
When looking at John Taylor's Treaty Signing at Medicine Lodge Creek, the content is clear. At a glance, it is clear that an agreement is being made and that it is significant. The artwork is representational and natural plants and human faces are seen. The form helps create this. This artwork is a sketch that probably was made using pen or pencil. While this is true, the faces in the art are unrecognizable and the natives are not accurately drawn.

It may take deeper analyzation to determine, but an agreement is being found between the two parties. This artwork is more abstract due to the fact that it is a ledger drawing that was made using pencil, crayon, and ink on paper. Ledger drawing is a native’s narrative drawing that is created using paper or cloth. The form also contributes to it being abstract. The coloring shapes and lines are all simplified. Wolf’s artwork also uses the convention called iconography. Tribal colors are used to differentiate the native groups along with red ceremonial paint on the part of the native women’s braids. These details are culturally significate to Wolf and other Native Americans with the same
Native American culture was a great influence on newly introduced western art when settlers first came to North America. Not only did Native Americans have their own style of art, sculpture, basket weaving, and other fine arts. Their artistic styles helped influence some European art and gave them a different outlook on not only art itself, but a brand new culture that they have not seen before. This paper will talk about the different styles of Native American art and compare it to European art styles and artist, as well as going into detail about how their culture influenced artistic styles.
Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek, september 27, 1830 - It was the first official treaty signed over the indian removal and it also began the process of it.
John Taylor’s work of art, Treaty Signing at Medicine Creek Lodge, may seem to be portraying very much alike affair, however, there are numerous differences from Howling Wolf’s work of genius, Treaty Signing at Medicine Creek Lodge. I believe that Taylor’s work tends to be more figurative as it represents the naturalistic of substance which can be distinguished clearly. Wolf’s art piece turned out to be more conceptual such that the objects expresses more on the non realistic. In addition, Taylor’s work can also be described as more of a sketch form possibly used by pen or pencil. On the other hand, Wolf's drawings are more of freedom of lines where it seems more of children's art work. The landscapes of these two are definitely differ from
I find the comparison of these two pieces, John Taylor’s Treaty Signing at Medicine Creek Lodge, and Howling Wolf’s Treaty Signing at Medicine Creek Lodge, very difficult. It is like comparing the view a major league fast ball pitched towards a batter, one batter, Howling Wolf, is in little league with fun and a child’s eye exploring type of worldly view, and the other John Taylor is that of a trained major league ball player. The tools used to make the pieces of work for one it is his chosen, Taylor, and for Wolf it is what he is allowed to possess.
The artist paints many onlookers around the central group. Another noticeable difference in the two pictures is that Wolf includes women in his picture which relates back to his cultural understanding of Indians. Taylor’s picture is definitely representational while Wolf’s is abstract. John Taylor’s work is more realistic when compared to the art of Howling Wolf. Visualizing reality in the two pieces, is simple. Taylor has a much more realistic piece while Wolf’s abstract art, the viewer has a more difficult time visualizing the actual event. Wolf’s work, at first glance, appears to be childlike and he uses the bright primary colors while Taylor uses the black and white. The composition of the art work describes the arrangement of the visual elements of people, landscapes, space in the pictures and the organization of the elements. In Taylor’s work one finds the use balance and contrast to emphasize his black and white picture. However, Wolf uses color and form to generate a purposefully abstract picture. Thus, composition is the placement of the visual elements in each work of art.
When one hears the name Andrew Jackson, there are many feelings that are conjured up by an individual. Some of these emotions include fear, disgust, and comedy. These sentiments are of reason for substantial evidence exists to prove these emotions plausible. Andrew Jackson was the seventh president under the Constitution of the United States of America who presided from 1829 until 1837. However, he was the first president to be impeached. With his controversial presidency, Andrew Jackson implemented many policies that continue to impact the United States in the modern era. His most controversial contribution was the Indian Removal Act. The Indian Removal Act prompted the infamous Trail of Tears that killed many Cherokee Native Americans and moved them westward to confined reservations. Of course, to implement such grand policy, Jackson had to unduly convince Congress of those actions. In Andrew Jackson’s speech given February 22nd, 1831 entitled “Message Regarding Indian Relations,” he tries to vindicate the Indian Removal Act, outline the benefits of such legislation, and explain why such it was indeed important. Rhetorical strategies such as ethos, pathos, and logos are effectively utilized by Jackson to persuade Congress to believe in the merits of upholding the Indian Removal Act which then lead to westward expansion and Native American migration from their homelands.
John Taylor’s illustration for Leslie’s Illustrated Gazette is more naturalistic than representational because he was focusing on what he saw in the grove at the treaty signing but ethnocentric beliefs may have caused him to make the Native-Americans look hostile in their facial expressions, with their bow and arrows at hand. He also portrays them as non-descript so you
I think John Taylor's intention was to strictly create the content or meaning. At a glance, it is clear that a signing and agreement is being made and that it is significant. However, the subject matter is not representational. The faces in the art are unrecognizable and the natives are not accurately drawn. His main goal was to create an artwork with accurate content but without accurate
The Webster-Ashburton Treaty was an implemented compromise which served the purpose of creating Maine’s boundary, and resolved the Caroline Affair of 1837. This Treaty was economically (WXT) significant for the U.S. because it gained an iron ore in Minnesota, as well as more land than England in
From the year of 1780 to the year of 1820 the Cherokee people signed treaties in an attempt to protect their homelands from new settlers moving onto Cherokee land. “Native American leaders believed that signing a treaty—even if
The United States federal government tried to resolve its bond with many different Native tribes by treaties. The treaties were formal agreements between the United States government and the Native Americans. Treaties were made by the executive branch on behalf of the president and then ratified by the United States Senate. The treaties made it where Native American Indians would give up their rights to hunt and live on huge sections of land that they had inhabited in exchange for trade goods, houses, and assurances that no further demands would be made on the said treaties (NebraskaStudies.Org). The United States broke many treaties between the Native Americans, but there were three major treaties that had an impact on the extinction of the
Everyone has been created unique and there is no other that is the like anyone else. People think different, dress different and like and dislike certain things. This is similar to the artists of the nineteenth century including Pierre Etienne Theodore Rousseau and Joseph Mallord William Turner. They are both artists during the nineteenth century and were painted at the same time; however, there is a difference between their styles, their point of view, and the scenery. However there are similarities between the two paintings. The paintings that will be compared and contrasted are “Under the Birches, Evening” and “The Campo Santo, Venice.”
Art, in each and every form that it comes in, shows us who we are. Our
Creating art is one of the single defining factors that set humans apart from animal species. Through art, humans are able to express their innermost ideas and feelings, without having the difficulty of trying to find the correct words to accurately describe their thought processes. Works of art can help us to understand the people who have come before us. This is evidenced by the knowledge humans have discovered of prehistoric men and their symbolic cave paintings. The expression, style, and meaning vary and archaeologists put in much effort to uncover these works.
The history of art dates back to ancient times. Artwork can be, and was, found around the world. What makes art interesting is that it can be created in any way, shape or form with any materials. It seems that the artwork can also tell us a lot about the artist. Art seems to be simply, a direct, visual reflection of the artist’s life. Therefore, one can assume that an artist’s life experiences and beliefs directly influence their art. If we look at examples from different periods of art we will be able to see the connection between the artist and the art.
