Throughout the entire play of The Crucible, John Proctor truly grew as a person, while later fixing his sins and making moral decisions. John Proctor had truly gone through a lot in the play, both emotionally and physically, being that he was wrongfully accused of witchcraft. Although some might contradict this statement, John Proctor loved his wife, Elizabeth, because even though he may have questioned her worth in the past, he always confesses his sins and does what he can to make it right, which is a true quality of a man. Along with this, John Proctor portrays characteristics of a Puritan because he always remains true to his family, alike he must stay true to God, therefore proving to him that John Proctor always stays true.
In The Crucible, John Proctor is not free of sin. He is no Rebecca Nurse, who has never done anything bad in her life. He is no Reverend Hale, who was only trying his hardest to cast the Devil out of each town. A case could even be made that John is worse than Judge Danforth, because Danforth thought he was doing the right thing. For John is guilty of lechery, a guilt that ends up getting him killed. However, despite this fault, John is considered innocent to most of Salem. It is this innocence that restores his sin as a husband. Although he is good as a citizen throughout The Crucible, John Proctor is a morally flawed husband at the start of the play, and is only able to redeem himself by the end of the play. Furthermore, John uses his citizen side to atone for his husband side.

Proctor is also aware of Mary’s power and cannot deny her of it.

The Crucible takes place in 1692 in colonial America, a time when witchcraft was still a very much a problem. Despite outspoken personality and qualities as a critical thinker, John Proctor is far from being a perfect human being. In his notes, Arthur Miller describes him as a sinner, "a sinner not only against the moral fashion of the time, but against his own vision of decent conduct." (P.20) Similar to Jesus who was tempted in the desert and taunted by the pharisees, Proctor's journey is riddled with hardships. He strives to overcome them and to follow his moral compass over the course of the novel. When Abigail Morris seeks him out after being fired, he has the courage to overcome his lust and to end their relationship. Every day, we make choices that impact our future. They decide where we go, who we meet and how other people view us. Each choice that we make pushes towards the supposedly right or wrong path, but the biggest question is how to decide which way we’re going. In the search for what’s right, the lines can become blurred into an adamant certainty that what’s wrong is right and vice versa. In Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, the characters find out first hand. After a regretful mistake, John Proctor is desperate to hold on to his ideals and values that make him a good man, but the hysteria of moments confuse everyone’s perspective on good and evil. Miller uses John Proctor’s character to demonstrate to the audience how easily affected even the strongest
Even tho John proctor was the most admired he still had his dark moments just like everyone else. In the play the crucible john proctor was the most admired character not only for his attitude he betrays but also for the way he supported the town and treated everyone as was the opposite for abigail she was the most despised throughout the play not only for lying but also for being a cheater and bully. “ Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another in my life!
My favorite character in all of the books and plays we have read and watched this year was John Proctor. Unfortunately, he was a victim. As a strong, caring, and unforgiving character, he was able to connect with the reader. He was strong because when he was going through terrible times, he still stayed strong and never gave up. “Why, we - have no fear of questions, sir.” (page 64) He was trying to do everything he could never give up his name, which shows to me that he is strong and relentless. He was also very caring. “I mean to please you Elizabeth.” (page 50) Knowing his personality, I believe he started sleeping with Abigail because he wanted to care for her but did so in the wrong way. He also cared for his family and the town. In a selfless way, Proctor was very unforgiving, not to others, but himself. If one could be damaged in God’s eyes, he allowed himself to believe that it was he! However, this is a false belief and it shows a mistrust in God, and he knew better. We don’t get to decide what God thinks about us. When we have a
