In the novel “Paper Towns” by John Green, extended metaphors were used throughout the text to explore the difference between appearance and reality. Green used separate extended metaphors to name each part of the book. The first extended metaphor that was used to explore the difference between appearance and reality was, The Strings. The strings are what holds us together as a person. We know this as, when Margo and Quentin come across a man who killed himself, Margo said “maybe all the strings inside him broke.” This shows how others can not see our strings, and if they are broken or not, just by looking at us. No one saw this man’s strings before he committed suicide because no one obviously helped him repair his strings. This means …show more content…
This extended metaphor shows us how eventually our true selves will be revealed to everyone eventually. We know this as Quentin says “Like each of us starts out as a watertight vessel. And these things happen-these people leave us, or don't love us, or don't get us, or we don't get them, and we lose and fail and hurt one another. And the vessel starts to crack open in places. And I mean, yeah, once the vessel cracks open, the end becomes inevitable...But there is all this time between when the cracks start to open up and when we finally fall apart. And it's only in that time that we can see each other, because we see out of ourselves through our cracks and into others through theirs." This shows us we can express a fake image of ourselves and no one will see out truth, like a water tight vessel that no water can get into. Sometimes a storm will hit the vessel or it will hit a rock and put cracks in it, making cracks and letting the water inside. Just like how we can hit rough patches in life and it forms cracks in us, and then others around us can see through our cracks and see the truth inside us. Quentin saw Margo as this amazing person who was “perfect”. However, she expressed that image when she was a “watertight vessel”. But then some of her friends turned against her and her boyfriend cheated on her, so she started to crack. And that is only when Quentin realised the real Margo. Green wanted us to learn through this extended metaphor that anyone can make a fake image of themselves, but eventually things are going to happen and the truth about ourselves will be revealed and that is just
Henson uses metaphors to explain things as well. While conveying the message, Mass explains, why Jeremy's string is different from anybody
Through the use of extended metaphor, Mary Oliver is allowed to express both the mentality and physicality when writing a poem, which is able to show the differences and similarities by comparison. The extended metaphor works to compare the process of writing poetry to that of building a house,
What is life? Is it the ablility of breathing or is it what people do before they stop breathing? According to Joe, in Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo, he sacrificed his life by leaving his family and love behind to go to war. Joe is an average teen until he is sent to war. His entire life changes in an instant by and explosion which left him ‘alive’ but with no limbs, eyes, mouth, and ears.
Throughout literature, colors are used to represent feelings, emotions and actions of characters. In the novel The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the color green is used to represent the love story between Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan. As he grew up and worked for his immense fortune, Gatsby transformed his life into one he felt would impress her the most. Fitzgerald uses the color green to represent Gatsby’s perfect image of Daisy, and the greed that engulfs the couple throughout the entire novel.
The last two lines act as a slap in the face. Every element works toward death, and the speaker almost slips into eternal rest. One can see him, putting the
Just like everybody else in the novel Benjamin Rand’s takes the words of Chance when he talks about the garden and uses that as a huge metaphor about being a productive businessman. Ben Rand being the very best businessman that he is interprets what chance is saying to exactly what a productive businessman would need to do but the meaning to what Chance was saying has a little different meaning to what Ben thought. Chance is saying that when plants are like people, he really means that they start as a sprout and they grow to either become a flower and plant or a tree, and when they times comes from the sprout to die it will die peacefully after it has done all of its duties to why it was made. The sprout cannot do it on its own though. The
We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful what we pretend to be, this phrase perfectly illustrates the truth in how our actions ultimately define us as human beings. Perception of reality plays an immense role in our society because depending on how people perceive us we act accordingly in order to conform. Ultimately when interacting with others we alter our behavioral patterns in order to mimic said group’s perception of who they are, which is often a delusion. After portraying a fictitious version of your self for a long duration of time you soon start to undertake the role which only shows how careful you have to be when deciding what role, you want to play in society.
Hazel’s character is created the word choice, descriptions, and figurative language. Word choice is the words or phrases specifically selected to send a message or sound a specific way. Figurative language is language not taken literally. John Green uses figurative language a lot through his book. The word choice John Green makes Hazel a very sarcastic person in the novel.
No longer are the people’s eyes wet with tears but instead are dry and red. This illustrates how the family is anticipating and holding their breath as the speaker slowly leaves the land of the living. While the speaker is ready to witness the glorious beginning of ascending into the afterlife, they also see a King who is witnessing the speaker’s journey, “For that last Onset- when the King Be Witnesses- in the Room-“(6-7). The king that is also witnessing the journey that the speaker is embarking on might be what the speaker believes is God watching everything
John Calvin also used similar verses as proof of God being selective. He commonly discusses the relation to the book of Matthew as have numerous others in their doctrines. The book of Matthew narrates another parable of a closed door. Matthew 7:13-14, read as a second coming signaling only a few would be saved and others was taken from the Lord’s lessons. Once again Jesus does not come out and say as he did in the Old Testament but rather again uses a metaphor. This time the metaphor is heave is the gate and salvation is the narrow road according to the author Mathew, narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it. Mathew and St. Luke’s theories makes the reader question; did Christ consider himself to be life’s author of predestination
Life is very complex and often hard to define. However, this challenge does not stop people from trying to sum up the meaning of life in one word. In Paper Towns by John Green, the three metaphors the strings, the grass, and the vessel are used throughout the book to chronicle the protagonist’s, Quentin, experiences. The novel revolves around Quentin Jacobsen, a high school senior. When his former best friend and long time crush, Margo Roth Spiegelman, comes back into his life and then suddenly disappears, Q attempts to piece together the clues he believes Margo left behind for him. Each of these three metaphors represent what Q is feeling and allow him to view life from different perspectives. As
Smith applies two larger metaphors to explain doctrinal preaching and to frame the rest of the book. These metaphors are an exegetical escort and a doxological dancer. He forms the major themes of the book on these two metaphors. The first metaphor, the exegetical escort, is to accept the word of Scripture to escort the reader into God’s proximity for conversion. One of the major themes of Smith’s book is that the text has to be initially understood properly by the preacher and then incorporated by the preacher. The preacher must sit under his own preaching. After doing this, the preacher will be able to exegete his assembly and use the word to deliver to them so that they will be met with the authenticity of
Paper Towns by John Green is a somewhat romantic young adult novel. The novel’s overlying central idea is that people are not made of paper. They have dimensions; unexposed sides to themselves that the world may never see. A person can never truly be known, because the human mind is a complex thing, filled with nooks and crannies never to be exposed.
John Green has utilised the genre of mystery/romance by using the main characters personality’s and qualities to outline these two genres. Quentin is romantic because he goes on a massive road trip and misses out on once in a life time experience in high school just to find Margo. Margo is mysterious as she vanishes without telling anyone and leaves clues which are easy enough to follow and are a sign of being okay. The story flicks back and forth between these two genres about mystery and love. Green has made use of dictation by writing in first person. This creates a thought that Quentin is telling a story in the moment and John Green is writing it down there and then. In the story understatements have been used to allow us to think deeply into the phrases. The phrase “I will miss hanging out with you” was told by Margo the night before she left. This gives sense that she will not see him which gets us thinking she may be leaving because of what she stated, but Quentin takes it differently. He thinks as they are in different social groups at school they won’t be able to hang out any more. Imagery has been created throughout the story due to when Margo explains the city as “paper people in paper houses” we imagine fake people on paper in houses. This could also resemble drawings or creations as Margo has a creative mind. The author also used parallelism this occurred when Margo and Quentin discovered more about themselves at the same time. They also both realise what they want in life at the same time as well. The style of John Green’s writing is he incorporates deep thoughts and intellectual language and concepts while also including how teenagers think and speak to entice them to read the story. All these techniques have been utilised by john Green and to make the story better. I still believe the book is really good because he has incorporated
The main goal of the protagonist (Quentin) is to find his childhood best friend, Margo after she “goes missing”. However, Quentin hasn’t spoken to Margo in over nine years, until she shows up at his window for the first time since they were kids. Margo takes him on a crazy adventure, but little did Quentin know that she was going to leave after that. He ends up being the last person to see her, so he feels like it is his obligation to find her. Margo loved leaving clues, so when quentin starts finding “clues” around her house and the town, he starts to believe that the clues were left for him. Quentin even said it himself, “i don’t know who she is anymore or who she was, but i need to find her”(pg.141) this shows how determined he was to find her, despite how much he even knows about her.
