In John F. Kennedy’s inaugural speech, he worked on persuading audience or listeners for the idea which is American should do anything that should be done to assure the survival and the success of liberty. In his mind, American should hold their liberty forever, further guarantee other country freedom. Kennedy really used a lot of rhetorical strategies in his speech. Of course, he used those strategies successfully. One of the rhetorical devices he used was antithesis. Another rhetorical device that I found out was metaphor which is a good way to create a good image, further, make audience believed in his mind. The use of metaphor can always give audience a more vivid image or sitting to helps the audience understand better, also helps the speakers or writers to set up persuasive words. At the 7th paragraph, he said:”But we shall always hope to find them strongly supporting their own freedom—and to remember that, in the past, those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger ended up inside.” The tiger” here was a metaphor; he uses this small metaphor to elaborate the principle. It also allows listeners got enlightenment and be affected by the vivid image. These sentence and metaphor word not only shows the author’s attitude but also a visual summery of the content above this paragraph. Of course, the use of metaphor make it more convincing that saying words that American will not enslave other countries which join the free country alignment. In general, he persuaded the audience to believe his ideas successfully. I just did a short analysis about the strategies John F Kennedy used. He pays attention on not only the content and theme, but also those rhetorical devices on language.
