Summary: In this eye-witness, journalist and reporter John D. Wells was invited to President McKinley’s reception on September 6th. Wells arrived to the reception early enough to see the final touches and decorations go up in the area. The president had not arrived yet, and the area was full of chairs to seat more than one hundred people. In the middle of this area, there was room for various lines of people and an empty section for the president to stand in. Once the president arrived, everyone got situated, the reported stood somewhere behind McKinley, along with other reporters and journalist, each preparing to write their stories. Our journalist, John Wells, watched closely as the doors opened. ”Securities” from back in those days escorted McKinley’s followers towards him for the meet and greet. McKinley humbly shook everyone’s hands and as the reported mentioned, “had kind words” for every single person. Everything was going well, McKinley’s people were all content, they enjoyed the one-on-one time with the President, and even McKinley himself looked like he was having the time of his life. All of a sudden, two shots were heard. At first nobody was aware of was going in the room. The people waiting for the president outside, thought maybe someone fainted. The doors were quickly closed and McKinley was put in a chair to rest while the assassin was thrown on the ground and captured. Wells describes McKinley’s attitude as peaceful, he requested for someone to gently tell the news to his wife. The most impressive part of McKinley’s reaction was that he saw this strange man who shot him, getting beaten, he simply said “See that no one hurts
