John Calvin Theology

John Calvin was a French theologian who spent and did most of his work in Geneva. When we talk about protestant reformation after Martin Luther he is one of the most significant figures. John Calvin completed his higher education at a French university and some of the theological views he was most influenced by were of Jacques Lefevre d'Etaples, Mathurin Cordier, Guillaume Bude and Erasmus. Calvin was considered a second-generation reformer because by the time he came to Geneva the Protestantism was already widespread there. Disciples of Calvin were obsessed with the glory of God as the purpose of all creation and transformation of social order towards holiness. Calvin had some

His idea of predestination was that in the eyes of God all men are not blessed with equal Grace. People are elected by the God and salvation is offered to some while others are barred from access to it. If a person is going to get salvation that is pre-decided as God knows past, present and future. Calvin also says that one shall never be clearly persuaded, as we ought to be, that our salvation flows from the from the wellspring of God's free mercy until we come to know his eternal election, which illumines God's grace by contrast: that God does not discriminate, adopt all into the hope of salvation but gives to some what he denies to other (Calvin, “Predestination” Janz p. …show more content…
For example, heaven was made all good and holy, but Satan still convinced Adam to commit sin. As it is described by Calvin that God is all omniscient then he already knew about the sin, but he still allowed that, so God must have a plan in his mind. As he mentioned that humans do not have free will, then how can one disobey God and create evil. Furthermore, Calvin believed that humans were born corrupt and that they cannot do what is good. This is certainly a weakness because it is demotivating and promotes negativity. Another weakness of Calvin's argument is that the fate of everyone's life is pre-decided. It is not the actions of a person that decides what is in store for them in the future. Therefore, it is unknown on what basis as God decided that some people will be saved and go to heaven, while others will not.
On the other hand, Calvinism had various strengths as well. For example, Calvin completely understood the human weaknesses well and knows about their sinful nature. So, he asked the people in his writings to constantly remember their creator and that Christ’s body was sacrificed due to human sin. Therefore, this shows that his faith in his ideology was strong and that people should be grateful for the sacrifices which God has made for
God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, therefore a predetermined path of righteousness or condemnation is contradictory to the core values of Christianity, as it eliminates the need for the will to be saved by Christ. This shows that God does not control our actions, in hopes that we live in accordance to him.
The Film, ‘The Prince of Egypt’ is a not a very accurate copy when compared to the story of exodus from the Bible. The 1998 Dreamworks production ‘The Prince of Egypt’ was created to follow the remarkable story of Moses, Leading his people from slavery but was changed by the directors to give it some originality. The setting, the characters and the storylines are some of the things that have been changed in the animated story. Therefore the Dreamworks Pictures film is inaccurate and does not flow along the same page as the Biblical story of Exodus.
Both Calvinism and Lutheranism believe in predestination and the denial of transubstantiation. Although Calvinists believe that the Holy Spirit is present in communion, as well as living a god-ly life, open confession of faith and participating in the sacraments of baptism and communion to help a person reach salvation. Lutheranism believes in two sacraments and stresses the reaching of salvation from faith and faith alone. Calvinism became the major form of Protestantism because of the easy access to a printing press to spread the ideas of Calvinism as well as private places of worship, allowing people to practice it
Calvin's unique coherent belief system played an important role in not only his success in Geneva but all over Europe and this is mainly due
In the Reformation era, two groups dictated the war of differing religions, Calvinism and the Catholic Church. Both had different interpretations of God as they maintained loyal members. The Catholic Church and Protestant denominations were enemies. John Calvin created the Protestant religion named Calvinism. Based in Geneva, Switzerland, it eventually became one of the largest Christian religion outside Roman Catholic. Its founder John Calvin used Geneva to spread his message. The Catholic Church experienced several issues in the 1500s. In 1517, Martin Luther’s “95 Theses” and the subsequent formation of the religion Lutheranism posed a threat to the Church. As a result, the Catholic Church took several measures to ensure loyalty from its
God gave men the free will to elect their own salvation. There is no sin until it is actually committed. Sin was now considered a voluntary act. It also consists of a change of heart, which revived the concept of limited atonement. Christ did not die for only a select few predestined elect, but for whosoever will accept God’s offer of salvation. Personal commitment also involved an active and useful Christian life in which individual action brings the kingdom closer.
Therefore the reformation started, and peasants’ rebellions were caused from all around the German. People called those reformers who resisted Roman Catholic Church, ‘Protestant’. One of the influential Protestants was Jean Calvin (French theologian), who developed Calvinism later. He also claimed that indulgence selling is wrong by saying that people don't have to follow the doctrine that hasn't mentioned in the Bible, and the only people who were selected by God can be saved (‘Institutes of the Christian Religion’).[5][6] Then think, even the people bought thousands of indulgences; they couldn't be saved if God did not select them.
John Calvin: Believed a reformation was needed so much he had ideas that affected the New World’s future

Professional athletes all around the world bring in sum of the largest paychecks around, but college athletes, though they work just as hard, see no compensation for their efforts. As of today, college athletes are not paid, and never have been. Even with the insane amount of money that both colleges and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) make from the athletes’ hard earned accomplishments. There are many college athletes that, though they are working hard to meet the expectations of colleges, still have to pay off their college expenses while being used by colleges to bring in lots of revenue. They are working harder than any other student on any college campus, balancing their sport and education, so shouldn’t they be rewarded?
He believes that God's act of creation did not stop after He created man, but continues all throughout the past, present and future. Calvin not only believes that God cares for all of man and animals, but directs the weather and excersises His power over inanimate objects. Calvin even goes so far as to argue that the movement of the sun, moon, stars, and planets is continued by God's power and not by some energy that was given to them at the beginning of creation, which "carnal sense" would tell us (Calvin 197). He does not believe that God sits back and watches or allows things in nature to happen, but actually causes them to happen. For example, if there was a drought one summer it was caused by God, possibly part of His vengeance or wrath. Or, if the crops flourished the next summer it was also His plan. Likewise, let us say per chance (no pun intended) a man is walking along a mountain pass and some rocks fall and kill him. For Calvin this was not an accident, but a determination and the Will of God. Calvin's ideology of God's Providence in nature is summed up in this quote:
This fundamental difference from the Catholic dogma that one could buy salvation to Luther’s new ideas as way to Heaven began to transform many people’s beliefs. Supporters of Luther adopted the concept of faith and knowledge of God as a way to repent their sins, and eventually, it reshaped the Christian culture. As Luther personally struggled to be a “perfect” monk, he discovered that faith in the gospel was the only way to be “made righteous by God”(roper 78). In response to his distress for his laity’s desire to buy indulgences, Luther wrote the “95 Theses on the Power of Indulgences.” He knew he was attacking the pope and the values of the church, but records show that he felt “...not fully in control of his actions, but handed over responsibility to a higher power”(84 roper). Cleary, Luther felt a spiritual connection with God and indulgences were in direct opposition to faith. His revolutionary claims in the “95 Theses on the Power of Indulgences” caused a conflict that would eventually be known as the Protestant Reformation.
One last thing Calvin is known for is his theology. This is put together in a
What does it mean for God to be “sovereign?” This is the question that has perhaps caused more controversy than any other. For John Calvin, God was completely sovereign. Nothing outside the will of God could take place, because everything that has taken place, is taking place, or will take place has been divinely ordained before time began. God is the source of all good, and evil cannot take place without His permission. According to Calvin, all of humankind are lost in their sins, and so depraved that they are incapable of finding salvation without God performing an inner-miracle within them. This being said, God has elected to Himself a chosen people from the beginning of time, not off of merit, but sola gratia.
The modern day cell phone has evolved throughout the last twenty years and has revolutionized the way society operates. It was once a cumbersome, bulky box with an equally heavy antennae attached. However, as time passed modern advancement produced an incredible technological achievement with multiple functions that expand upon its general concept. Modern cell phones contain the processing power and storage capability that would rival the most advanced desktop computers ten years ago while also progressing the realm of communication with its unique platform. Being able to send and receive messages instantly while also simplifying societal interactions has become an intricate piece to modern culture. This communication technology has also modified people’s interactions with the world and their perception of reality. However, with its vast technological achievements, problems and issues have appeared within our society.
