As a part of an immigrant family, there is no doubt that, as the oldest, I had to help my parents with English translation. Even though I have been in this role for years, it was not until recently that I realized the significance of my responsibilities.

Lukas had a glow of innocence and purity that shone like the setting sun. His hair was blond and neatly trimmed, kept under a military cap which had been adjusted to fit his small head; presumably, the children’s costume manufacturers had considered that a brave soldier would lose his hat fighting off the bad guys, as the boy made his way through the battlefield that was his bedroom floor. His eyes were a gentle blue and flagrantly full of life. But, more than anything, it was his warm smile and infectious laugh that was impossible to ignore.

The trail crossed the face of a hill with a long drop to the valley below. Father had pointed it out the night before, but it was only in the daylight that I realized how lucky I was not to have stepped off the path.
