Throughout Red Glass, by Laura Resau, the characters have to overcome many changes. One character that changes dramatically is the main character, Sophie. At the beginning of the novel, Sophie is introduced as a sheltered girl, terrified of the outside world. Sophie experiences many things that influence her to become a young woman that is willing to sacrifice her safety for the people she loves. She is influenced mostly by the antagonist, Angel. Angel supports Sophie in ways that make her want to change herself. Sophie changes positively throughout the story into a strong, fearless person, and Angel’s love for her is what makes her capable of that change.
The author, Daniel C. Weaver depicts the story “Beyond the Glass” in a skillful way to engage the audience. Weaver does a good job of showing the struggle of the pathologist to make the audience ponder upon the identification of the disease. Although the story, “Beyond the Glass” contains a great deal of medical terms, however, Weaver maintains the story appropriate for a general audience by using descriptive details and suspense.
Joseph E. Lee was born in Philadelphia in 1849, he graduated from Howard University in 1873. He moved to Florida that same year and became the first African American lawyer in Jacksonville and in the state of Florida. He served in the House of Representatives from 1875 to 1879 and in the state Senate from 1881 to 1882. He was one of the most influential African American men in Florida through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. He was elected municipal judge of Jacksonville and was one of the first African Americans to have this honor. He educated free slaves at a college by the name of Edward Waters College. Lee worked as a public servant acting at various times as a state legislator, a lawyer, federal customs collector and educator.

The poem “The Nevada Glassworks” tells about a mother growing in the 50s and a glassworking company making glass in Nevada. The 50s were post-World War II and were better known as the start of the nuclear age. It is during this time that the narrator’s mother is in her teen years and is growing up. Along with her we find that this glasswork company is also growing and is making great progress on the research they are conducting.
