This is by my favorite sit-in and performance of the semester. I have been fortunate enough to be raised around music all of my life. Sticking to a sound I know and love, is jazz. Know performing, is a whole different category. It takes practice, but what I did not realize is how much. Here is a comparison, when I was in in jazz band, we practice the same piece to perfection. Is this the right way to learn music? Joe Eckert opened up the class with this question, and it made me ponder. Teaching music is almost as instrumental as playing it. One thing that needs to be incorporated in teaching aspects today is sight reading music. This is when a jazz ensemble picks up a song they have never seen before and plays it. Practicing slight reading

Victor Wooten redefines the word musician. Regaled as the most influential bassist since Jaco Pastorius, Victor is known for his solo recordings and tours, and as a member of the Grammy-winning supergroup, Béla Fleck & The Flecktones. He is an innovator on the bass guitar, as well as a talented composer, arranger, producer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. But those gifts only begin to tell the tale of this Tennessee titan.

I guess you could say my obsession with musicals began in fifth grade, in a dark classroom with twenty or so other students all huddled around a small television. Sitting cross legged on the floor, my music teacher wanted to show the class a video; I don’t quite remember why. It was the first song of the Legally Blonde musical, called “Omigod you guys”. Upon hearing that song I wanted to listen to the rest of the musical. It was the first musical I have ever watched, I was captivated. Now four years later I’m hooked on a different musical, Hamilton, by Lin Manuel Miranda.
Having looked at the emotional effect this music has on people, it is now worth looking at the specific churches within the Sydney diocese to get a greater understanding on a smaller level as to how the music is played and what effect it might have. To do this, there have been visits to said churches to see what goes on, this is like a large scale of the participant observation methodology. This was a very useful in developing an understanding for how different churches of the same denomination were going about music as part of the service. There is some clear information that has come out from attending these churches. Firstly, and worth noting, the churches run very similar services, across most of the churches the structure of songs is the
* “when you speak with great educators, and look behind the test scores, the lessons learned in studying music, learning to play an instrument, playing in a band, learning to read music, all provide a richness to a child's education that will last a lifetime,” (par 1).
My topic is Music in the Sixties. In my essay I would like to determine that events that occurred during the 1960’s had a significant effect on some of the music that was produced. I believe that certain music and musical events derived from peoples feelings and views on things that occurred during the 60’s. Some of these events include the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, politics, and society as a whole. There were many different stereotypes and prejudices. There was war going on, and there were many people who were trying to focus on peace. My main goal is to show how these events may have influenced people’s music, and also to emphasize how music was used to unify people despite all of the negativity that
Bobby McFerrin is an amazing musican. He used the pentatonic scale to reveal one surprising result of the way the brains are hard wired. When I saw the video at first I thought it was some trained people doing it for him, but after I watched a several times I learned that I was wrong. It was actually done and not fake, he made all the audience sings according to his steps thought to them. Every single people have the ability to sing, though it is hidden talent. Music really can change the way of people’s
The definition of music is very different to many people. Some say that music is the arrangement of sound and silence. Others like myself say music is that and much more. Music is an aural form of art that is used to express emotion and touch the hearts of the listener through the use of phrasing, dynamics, style and tone color. Music is a very universal art form.
No other composer or musical artist has made as big of an impact on music as Ludwig Van Beethoven. He influenced many other composers, and made some of the most beautiful pieces that are still played today. It is truly amazing that he was able to master his craft and become questionably the greatest composer that has ever lived, despite having a condition that would seem to make composing music impossible.
The Sixties were an exciting revolutionary period of time with great social and technological change. Some people called it the “decade of discontent” because of the race riots in Detroit and La, and the demonstrations against the Vietnam War. Other people called it the decade of “peace, love, and harmony”. It was called this because of the peace movement and the emergence of the flower children. (Britannica) The sixties were about assassination, unforgettable fashion, new styles of music, civil rights, gay and women’s liberation, Vietnam, Neil Armstrong landing on the moon, peace marches, sexual freedom, drug experimentation, and Woodstock. All of these components caused a revolutionary change in the world of popular Music.
I think that I will be able to take out of it that teaching a beginner to hear the notes first and then learn the notation is a very effective way of teaching. I hope to be able to use this more as I begin to teach. I have used this method to teach a person to play the tuba for marching band, and now she can read the music very well. The way of teaching was very effective for quick learning. I also hope to take out of this article all the different way to use the different methodology. I find that it was interesting that learning a language and learning to read music is very similar in the steps that are taken to eventually learn the language or, in this case, music. This is what I wish to take out of this and to improve on from my prior
I expect my students to progress enthusiastically alongside the drivers of knowledge, autonomy, and creativity, and to maintain a high level of curiosity and artistic honesty. In order to reach these goals, my experience as a teacher led me to place orality at the center of my teaching strategy. I consider ear training as essential in jazz learning. It includes singing and memorizing melodies and bass lines, transcription exercises, instant arrangements, and physical internalization of jazz rhythms. For example, I always start the study of a new piece in taking a couple of minutes to listen to it, then to try to sing/clap/dance and learn the melody and the bass by heart.
The history of American music begins with a fundamental process of exchange through all different social lines, where diverse cultures meet, and mix. Music has and always will be defined as sounds that are arranged in a particular pattern that are played to be meaningful and pleasurable. The chronology of music began in the Medieval period, when chanting was introduced into the Church. Music has then moved its way through many stages: renaissance, baroque, classical, romantic and leading up to 20th century American music. American 20th century music is made up of a diverse number of styles that are reflected by cultural traditions and the era’s of the past. Immigrants from Spain, France, England, Germany and Ireland all contributed and brought their own unique styles to the forefront, hence creating American music. African Americans created influential musical traditions that include rhythm and improvisation that were later combined with European traditions and other indigenous music.
The realm of classical music is a relatively veiled in the sphere of popular culture, but if you take the time to scour through the beautiful, sometimes hundreds of years old pieces, you will be surprised by the magnificence and allure that the classical music genre can offer. There are three categories of classical music that can be observed throughout the extensive universe of classical pieces, absolute music, program music, and characteristic music or character pieces.
