Arizona former sheriff, Joe Arpaio, attained a reputation for his inhuman treatment of undocumented immigrants and prisoners. Arpaio job was to protect the people of his community from crime. The very law he was sworn to uphold he flagrant disregard it .Arpaio and his department would roundup Hispanic looking people and detained them; because, they thought they was illegal immigrant. He would referred to his jail as an concentrate camp and separated the prisoners by race. His obsess with cracking down on illegal immigrant cause him and his staff to overlooked many sexually abuse cases including children. Arpaio even held an faulty sweep where a house was set on fire killing the occupants and puppy. Arpaio leadership style was unethical and
The state of Arizona has issued a new state law which enables police officers to act as immigration officers. With this underestimated powers given to the police, it will cause a lot of problems, and sensitivities to all the legal and illegal immigrants (Cnn.com). Undocumented students residing Arizona will be in a constant fear of being deported since any minor issue such as calling the police for help in any case given can put their lives in the danger of deportation. It’s only a matter of time if the government doesn’t stop this act, Arizona will impose unfair laws for education toward undocumented students. This will only cause chaos, and taking away the validity of the American Dream.
In another account of rape on April 4, 2014, a sheriff’s deputy was convicted of rape where he pleaded no contest. Jose Sanchez was found guilty and sentenced to nine years in prison. He originally pulled over a woman in her car for an outstanding arrest warrant and then came to find she was drunk driving. Rather than arresting her there, he put her in the back of his patrol car and drove her out to the desert where he abused her and then drove her back to her car where he continued to sexually harass her. Two days later he pulled over a woman in her mid-thirties and bribed her in the form of a sexual activity .
Joe Arpaio was elected sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona from 1993 to 2016. He had different programs that captured the public and media around the world. He had the tent city jail, the posse, the chain gang, and the pink underwear program and many more. Arpaio's chain gangs contribute thousands of dollars of free labor to the community. The pink underwear program came about when he noticed inmates were stealing the jailhouse white boxers, which was costing him over 40,000 dollars a year. He then decided to dye all inmates’ underwear pink for a better inventory control. The same with the handcuffs, they started disappearing so they he ordered pink handcuff replacements. He learned that the color pink was calming. Joe decided to order everything
With six people murdered and 14 people injured, it is apparent that rumors have provoked the violence in Arizona that was actually never present. In the article “Violent Rhetoric and Arizona Politics” by Nathan Thornburgh, that is directive the author aims to convey. He points out that Tucsonan Jared Loughner’s crime occurred in an “overheated political environment” where politicians lied and overstated facts to support their campaigns. Politicians in Arizona attempted to tie the increasing crime rates with illegal immigration and by mentioning stories of beheadings in the desert. In doing so, it was revealed that there was no evidence or statistical data to support that claim. It is believed that Congress Woman Gabrielle Giffords was targeted
Forensic argument_ in our city (Phoenix, AZ) we used to have our sheriff Joe Arpaio who was well known as the thoughts sheriff of all the time. Even though, he was doing a great job by keeping our families safe and taking care of the animal cruelty. He was also known as the most racial sheriff of the town. He became notorious to undocumented families after activist start noticed he was violating the federal judge order to stop enforcing civil immigration laws. In 2011 he had a preliminary injunction where the order banned deputies from detaining anyone solely on suspicion they were undocumented. Again, he continued to detain illegal immigrants event though he had an order from the judge. Now, he still in trials and might face up to six months
“Senate Bill 4 is a piece of legislation that Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed in May and it aims to ban “sanctuary cities” by requiring sheriffs, constables, police chiefs and other local leaders to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and allows police to ask about the immigration status of individuals they lawfully detain” (Alvarez). The consequences for sheriffs, constables, police chiefs and other local leaders if they do not follow the legislation are that they could face Class A misdemeanor and possibly jail time (Mansoor & Pollock). “In addition, they can could face civil penalties ranging from $1,000 to $1,500 for the first violation and $25,000 to 25,500 for consecutive offenses” (Alvarez). Many people are against Senate
Arizona has enforced the new senate bill 1070 which gives the police authority to check immigration status when enforcing other laws. SB1070 is supposed to cut the down on the illegal immigrants in Arizona by having immigrants carry immigration papers, or will be held until proven their status in the USA. The more they try to secure the border with bill 1070 the more they end up taking away simple constitutional rights of the citizens. The senate bill 1070 that has been passed is causing racial profiling, unconstitutional acts, and has put federal law into question.
The Department of Justice has addressed that the “SB 1070 unconstitutionally interferes with federal government's authority to set and enforce immigration policy, explaining that “The constitution and federal law do not permit the development of patchwork of state and local immigration policies throughout the country” (“Citing”). In short terms, the state of Arizona has made up their own law in enforcing anti-immigration law and procedures that interferes with the U.S constitution. Problems have arisen due to how the SB 1070 is unreasonable when it comes to search and seizure (“Arizona's”). The law enforcer will purposely attempt to prove that the suspect is guilty of something even if it is not lack of citizenship. This law has caused court challenges. “The lawsuit states that the SB 1070 violates the supremacy clause, the first amendment to freedom of speech, amendment right to freedom from unreasonable search and seizures, and the equal protection clause” (“Arizona's”). This immigration law targets illegals yet the law is not quite legal
In April of 2008 the Board of Supervisors met again to vote on the motion to raise taxes and retain the “probable cause” mandate. However, this time around the opposing side was no longer the Latino community. In April the sides consisted of “Help Save Manassas”, Greg
Christina Littlefield reports that Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, an undocumented immigrant, had seven felony convictions in the United States and had been deported from the country five times, yet the city of San Francisco declined to detain him for ICE officials and released him into the community. Sanctuary cities release criminals, like Lopez-Sanchez; consequently posing a threat to surrounding communities. According to Jessica Vaughan out 8,145 undocumented immigrants released from detention requests, 63% had previous criminal convictions. Sanctuary cities allow perilous immigrants among legal residents of the United States. These cities enable aliens to commit barbaric crimes, leave the country, and then come right back with no penalty. Of those previous criminal records, Vaughan reports 36.6% undocumented immigrants had felony charges and 23.4% had charges related to violence, assault, sexual abuse, weapons, or drug distribution. Rapist, drug dealers, and murderers are all threats to the community. Hostile immigrants deserve to be in jail, not harbored in Sanctuary
It is clear that illegal immigration has gotten out of control and constringent measures need to be taken to protect the United States borders. The local Government of Arizona recently decided to take control of the situation, by passing the “Support our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” {House Bill 2162}. This bill gives law enforcement officers and agencies the authority, to lawfully stop, detain and arrest anyone who appears to look like an illegal alien. The bill out-right condones racial profiling and it violates civil rights, as well!
Back in 2007 there were several concerns over immigration as a whole and exploding proportions of illegal immigrants crossing the border in the Arizona area. Arizona attempted to resolve the influx of people across the border by imposing heavy fines on employers hiring illegal immigrants. At that time in Arizona there was a democratic governor Janet Napolitano that continually vetoed the Arizona’s legislature attempt to reduce illegal immigration. In 2009 the state replaced the Democratic governor with a Republican governor Jan Brewer who was supportive of reforms for immigration in Arizona. In 2010 the immigration problem was so sever that Arizona passed legislation allowing the state to enforce federal law for identification of legal immigration into the United States. This sparked a nation wide discussion on illegal immigration and immigration reform.
Currently, one of most debated policy issues in America is immigration. Starting with the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the American government created several immigration laws that sought to put an end to illegal immigration by mandating workplace regulations, employer sanctions, internal enforcement mechanisms, and border security (Nowrasteh 2). According to immigration policy analyst Alexander Nowrasteh at the Center of Global Liberty and Prosperity of the Cato Institute, by the 1990s, legal immigration was essentially impossible to the United States unless the immigrant was highly skilled, had a close American citizen or legal permanent resident relative or friend who could sponsor him or her, or was a refugee. The Arizona immigration laws should be repealed due to damage done to the state’s economy, the benefits of immigrants to the American economic structure, and the societal harm imposed upon citizens.
This was a good album to listen. I enjoyed it as well. I agree this wouldn't be my first selection of music to choose from. Track 1, was a great way to start the album off it puts you in the move to dance. After looking up the meaning of what blues music should sound like I can say that this album was a great example of what blues music should sound like. The guitar, saxophone and piano instruments are what stood out to me on the entire album. The album gave me a good idea of what songs were like back in the
Why are humans so intelligent and why do they have such large brains? Well, humans are not alone with big brains - there are dolphins, squid, sharks, elephants, chimpanzees and other animals with big brains also. Human brains seem to have more density and more folds perhaps so it can fit into a small cranial capacity? Let's talk about the human brain for a moment, shall we?
