Job Corps is a federal government funded program designed to educate and provide job training for Low income, and/or troubled youth. There are many outstanding qualities the Job Corps program provides, but like all great programs it does have its kinks and corks in addition to its greatness. In this Editorial I will be providing both pros and cons of the Job Corps program experience. On the positive side, Job Corps is a tuition free program, you can obtain a HSD (High School Diploma) or GED, you’ll receive job training from a list of different trades of your choice, as well as advanced training in the field of your choice if you so choose it. You can obtain housing depending on eligibility, and your State driver’s license as well. Contrary to traditional high school, in the Job Corps program you a required to complete a trade as well as …show more content…
Despite popular believe, all Job Corps center locations do not provide all the same trade fields. The more commonly trades usually consist of Construction, Office/Business, and Medical. Unique to Saint Louis Job Corps center is a partnership with a local agency that helps youth after completing the program with housing. Some less attractive traits about Job Corps you might find consist of: located away from home, living with strangers, exposure to multiple complex maturity levels, false advertisement, staff inconsistency, and lack of respect on campus. Job Corps has adopted the concept that if a student is stationed at a location where they are not from, they may be able to focus more intensely on their studies. This concept is accurate to a certain degree, but what the program fells to realize
The struggle we face as a corps is to find multi-generational balance. This imbalance is caused by cultural and language differences. However, we are finding success and receptiveness in our corps
The author points out various examples of the Corps short-comings throughout history. With the Marine Corps already struggling to stay atop its game, it didn’t shed positive light on the situations. With that said, it’s hard to point out the flaws of the Corps without also showing its achievements and how we can overcome any obstacle we are faced with.
Serving others is a down deep way of learning more about yourself and helping others to see past themselves. Our Business and Professional Communication class participated in several service projects, which were interesting and exciting to be involved with helping others. As I am studying the major courses of Early Childhood/Special Education, our group project with the “Big Brothers Big Sister” program was very memorable to me. It was wonderful to have fun and participate in various activities with the kids. The environment was caring due to everyone helping each other accomplish different tasks. It was a great feeling to be able to share our time, talents, and hearts with the kids.
The G.I. Bill would undergo several legislative changes. On March 28, 1970 President Richard Nixon signed the Veterans Education and Training Amendments Act (Mosch, 1971, p. 280). The act introduced two new provisions. The first introduced a rate increase of 34.6% (Mosch, 1971, p. 280). The second, eliminated most duplication prohibitions (Mosch, 1971, p. 280). The G.I. Bill would again be modified in July of 1985 and adopting the name of its Alabama representative sponsor Sonny Montgomery (Simon et al., 2010, p. 1008). The most recent of amendments to the G.I. Bill came in the Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 or Post-9/11 G.I. Bill for short (Hitt, Sternberg, Wadsworth, Vaughan, Carlson, Dansie & Mohrbacher, 2015, p. 536). This amendment increased previous educational benefits and expanded the number of
Have you ever thought about joining the Air Force? Well , if you haven’t, just imagine the respect you’d get for serving our country, the pride you’d feel for helping keep America safe. Imagine flying all around the world and meeting so many varieties of people, seeing lots of different cultures. (Lieutenant Colonel Jerry Quincy) Although the USAFA has its disadvantages, it teaches future service men and women many qualities that they can use in their lives. It also shapes these cadets for the military by teaching them discipline, responsibility, and good work ethic.
I came to St. Louis job corps in June with goals of getting a high school diploma and doing carpentry. A few people were telling me that I was not going to be able to get the program but I push the issued. My family needed me to experience this so it would give me structure in life and figure out how to be a man. In secondary school all I wanted to do was play games and goofy off and go to the boxing gym and not do my work while every one of my peers advanced on and I didn’t. When I really got selected in this program I was thinking this was a joke or it wasn't for me, before I even gave it a chance yet I began to understand this is my last chance in discovering what it is to be successful in life.
While the Corps sets academics as their number on priority, it's easy for cadets to experience burnout, exhaustion, and a decreased desire to study when the opportunity arises. The first lesson that I learned in the Corps is how to study and devote myself to academics despite being tired. The Corps also gave me a new level of resilience that I never imagined myself developing. There were many points throughout my freshman year that I genuinely wanted to quit the Corps- the stress, exhaustion, and
On June 28, 2000, the Supreme Court ruled in a 5-4 ruling that the Boy Scouts of America could prohibit gay men and boys from gaining membership. This case came about when James Dale, assistant Scoutmaster to Troop 73 of New Jersey, was notified that his adult membership to the Boys Scouts of America was revoked based on the fact that his sexual orientation was viewed as inconsistent with the Boy Scouts of America’s values by Monmouth Council Executive, James Kay.
While the service trip took place in the Northern US, there were pre-determined requirements that had to be met before we could embark, one of which was a minimum fundraised amount of $500. The money that was raised by this program went towards scholarships for other Kentucky residents to attend YMCA Conferences, where they have the chance to learn about democracy, kinship, and our community. I count this as community service because the YMCA changed my life by transforming an academic student into a servant leader. Providing the chance for someone else to be shaped into one of tomorrow's leaders is doing a service to my community. The third tier of my service goes towards the United States of America. An example of my service to America has already been noted in my ten day service trip to northern states where I helped shelve books with my peers and kinfolk who had fallen into unfortunate circumstances as well as re-vitalise YMCA Camp Y-Owasco through mulching over 5 miles of trails; however, a lesser noted service that many young adults seek is education. I firmly believe that the education of forthcoming generations is one of the greatest services that can be done for our
Immense government expenditures are used in the assistance of these individuals, but often fail to translate to success and independence following emancipation. The iFoster jobs program aims to fill this gap and connect educated and trained former foster youth with respectable employers in need of qualified individuals. The iFoster organization has laid out a roadmap that illustrates its process of connecting these individuals with employers and has shown success with 250 youths thus far. First, iFoster networks with employers and assesses their needs and what they look for in employees. Then, they set a youth training program tailored to those needs. The individuals are then trained and provided with resources including courses, professional clothes for interviews, transportation, etc. These individuals are then assessed and analyzed for the job that best fits their qualifications and preferences. The individuals receive support through the interviewing and hiring process and receive ongoing support following beginning work. Regular check-ins and communication with the employers ensure that these youths are excelling at work and that their needs are being
Here is a list of issues with a select few Job Corps centers not adhering to the protocols and policies, reporting false information on center data, and a curriculum that is not regionally accredited. It is now time to make a stand and correct these issues by laying down the building blocks for the future generations of our nation. We can continue in the tradition of educating our nation’s future and giving them the ability to leave their mark in our nation’s history as we have with past generations. It only takes but a scratch beneath the surface in order to see it for what is really is. A program which can be saved and transformed into something new for the next generation of
The concept of mandatory pro bono and whether or not lawyers should be required to participate in this public service has been the contentious subject of debate over recent years. Focusing on Mirko Bagaric and Penny Dimopoulos’ statement: “In our view not only do lawyers not have a duty to act for free, but they are misguided in doing so and should, for the long term benefit of the community, cease engaging in pro bono work,” this essay will critically analyse the implications of introducing mandatory pro bono into the legal profession by examining both the positive and negative aspects through the issues of altruism, tradition, government funding and the onus on small firms.
The Career Services Center offers services on resume writing, which gives WVU students the advantage/benefit of utilizing the most up-to-date knowledge on what and how to write a resume. Not only do students do mock interviews with this office, but Career Services Center has career fairs. The career fairs bring in employers with vacant positions or internships. These potential employment opportunities allow students to hand a potential employer a resume and talk about or do an on-the-spot job interview. Sometimes students are hired right on-the-spot for
I attended the McKinney Job Corps a mighty long time ago. I remeber being so scared because the girls were aggressive and down right direspectful to the instructors. No matter what your story there is always someone that has been through so much moroe than yourself. I was appreciative to have a roof over my head/food on the table and educators that encouraged me to dream, believe, seek and presevere. The Center Director was compassionate and called me by my name as he walked the halls of McKinney Job Corps. I attended classes, stayed focused, joined the government student group, and read a book every night. I received a scholarship to begin college courses. The rest is history. Look around yourselves. You are exactly where you are because of choices you made. Job Corps is there for you to succeed . It is meant to provide you a place by which you can build and rebuild your own dreams. You can choose to do something good and meaningful with your time in Job Corps or you can be just like the environment you came from. Spoken like a true Atterburian lol. You're probably one of the idiots who are causing trouble in Atterbury OR you are probably new to the game. Open your eyes. This is a center that told us that 85% of Atterbury had aids or hiv. This is also a center where they said, "Bobcats live in the woods" knowing that those "woods" are
In the United States, there is a continuing debate about how success should be measured. Many parameters can be used to evaluate program effectiveness. Since this program is based on how and if the youth applies the skills that were taught, if the youth enters post-secondary education and whether the youth is gainfully employed these parameters are very concrete. This will be measured by 90 day, 180 day and 365 day follow-up. Follow-up will consist of office visits, home visits, mailings and phone calls.
