Joan of Arc lived during a time where most of the world was a patriarchal society and women were not treated equally and were seen as being beneath men. She also lived during a time where the church was the overarching power and were the only ones who had a say in nearly all situations. Although some of the charges were accurate, there was no way they could have proved she was a “witch” and she simply dressed in men’s clothing for her own protection, not to rebel against the church's ideology. She may have gone against what the church believed, but she was also a heroine and the extent of her punishment, death, was unquestionably extreme. In class we talked about how the lives of holy women were shaped through their visions, fasting, virginity, and prayer (pilgrimage, devotion). Women would vow their virginity and do charitable work for their devotion to the Lord. Prayer in the community formed active religious communities. Saint Catherine formed roles for herself that went against the ideals of holy women. As a young girl she imitate desert hermits and gave up food but would feed others. The roles of women back then were to get married, have children, and look after the home. This was an important and expected role for women so to take a vow of virginity was a big deal.

Almost everyone has seen Disney’s Mulan. They watched it as a child and Mulan’s story inspired every little girl who watched it to live their life with no limitations, but there is another lesser known story that would inspire little girls even more as this time the story is true.
