In the 1970’s, America not only witnessed the worst political scandal of the twentieth century, but also one of the most successful acts of investigative journalism to ever be done in America. The Watergate Scandal included a series of illegal activities initiated by members of President Nixon’s administration, the most significant crime being the break in and wiretapping of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in 1972. CREEP (Committee to Reelect the President) funded these illegal projects by hiring people like the White House Plumbers to carry on missions to stop the leaking of classified information. Richard Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal left no doubt to his involvement of being impeached. During the Nixon Administration, he was able to prevent colleges from being gender biased and allowing both male and female to have equal opportunity and receiving financial aid as well as competing in sports. He was able to establish the Environmental Protection Agency. He also worked to create a relationship between the U.S and the Middle East. Unfortunately, even with all of the accomplishments, he was able to have, everyone will remember Richard Nixon as the president who was involved in the Watergate scandal. The Watergate scandal left an asterisk by his legacy while being in the office, the results left him with having to resign and with him facing criminal charges as well, the Scandal became well known to the public in the summer of 1974. Through my essay, I will discuss why I am intrigued by the Watergate scandal, and discuss what if Richard Nixon never got caught on the audio tape?

James Earl Carter Jr. was the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. Carter was also the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971 to 1975, after two terms in the Georgia State Senate from 1963 to 1967. Cater had accomplished much great success through his years, he had accomplished many major things. He was a very generous man, he was willing to help many people as he could. He was also trying to make peace. Not only Carter was the president or a governor, but he was also a peanut farmer, it was a family tradition.

Jimmy Carter was an important part of Georgia’s history. Carter was born on October 01, 1924 in Plains, GA. Plains is located down in southwestern Georgia. Growing up, his father, James Earl Carter Sr., was a peanut farmer on a small plot of land, and his mother, Bessie Lillian Gordy, was a registered nurse. Carter is currently at the age of 92 and is still helping out around town. As an adult he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, moved back to his hometown of Plains, GA. Currently, Carter has been battling cancer. He has yet to announce the type of cancer he was diagnosed with at the age of 90. Although, pancreatic cancer has been through members of the family.

He appealed to the public and had won. When he was governor though, he fought to end segregation, increased the amount of black officials, promoted equal education, etc. In 1976, Carter decided to run for president. His ideas of balancing the budget and his statement “I’ll never tell a lie” gained momentum during the Watergate Scandal. He won the election and became the 39th president of the United States of America. Jimmy Carter is truly the most influential person during the 1970s. Carter had believed that it was imperative we change our energy policy after the energy crisis in 1973. Carter had succeeded in creating huge emergencies stores of oil and natural gas. He also decreased foreign oil by eight percent. Carter was a human rights activist and had suspended aid to Chile, Nicaragua, And El Salvador because their governments abused their people. The Camp David Accords of 1978 was his biggest accomplishment. Israel and Egypt had signed a peace treaty which Carter had acted in as an arbitrator. He knew that to be a champion of social justice, you have to make morally good actions. Being a President of the United States gave him great opportunities to wield influence and that is something he has continued to do since leaving the Oval Office. This living President has set a precedent of justice in the White House and even more so outside of it. Through his industrious life, his work before the White House, his actions during his presidency, and everything he has done since he has left me with a deep pride for the values that make America who we are as a country. I am proud to have Jimmy Carter has one of our great Presidents and he sets the example of social justice embodied in a person.

Jimmy Carter was in office as president of the United States of America for four years only. He was president from 1977 through 1981; during this time period many different event occurred.

The Watergate Scandal was the downfall of Richard Nixon. It made Americans put less trust in the government and built trust in the media. It all takes place at the Watergate Hotel. He led an extremely corrupt administration to get him re elected. He also was the first President to resign. The unethical organization that was formed was called the CRP (later creep). They helped Nixon get re elected in 1972. They used illegal tactics to get him re elected. They paid lawyers for the burglars who broke into the Watergate Hotel. These people were known as the Plumbers. That was directed by John Ehrlichman. They were the White House investigation unit. They prevented information leak and burglarize any of Nixon reveals. Watergate seven was Richard Nixon closest comrades. They were in charge of the Creep and the plumbers that carried out many illegal activities. Christ the Transformer of Business culture is a good trait to obtain. “These people are intimately involved with those in the business, but their distinctive Christian standards are not lost” (Ruddell, 2004, p. 40). The people that were involved in the Watergate scandal should have had this trait.

On July 7, 1946, he married Rosalynn Smith. When his father died in 1953, he resigned a naval commission and returned to Plains.

The Watergate scandal was important because Nixon and his cabinet arranged to get people to spy on the Democratic National Committee in the Watergate building. After it became clear Nixon was responsible, he manages to resign before he was going to be impeached. President Nixon was involved with the Watergate scandal and should be sentenced to jail because he organized it, which then got leaked out and finally led to his resignation.

Early on the morning of June 17, 1972, there was a break-in and several burglars were arrested inside the office of the Democratic National Committee’s headquarters in the Watergate Office complex building located in Washington, D.C. Thus began a series of events that would shake the public’s confidence in its most visible symbol of American authority and prestige: the presidency of Richard Nixon. A seemingly random robbery at a Washington, D.C. building leads to the first presidential resignation in American history. We will discuss the following events surrounding the Watergate break-in: when did the break-in occur, how was Nixon connected to the break-in. We will also discuss the events surrounding the discovery of the tapes, the issues involved in trying to get the tapes from President Nixon and what is the "18 1/2 minutes of silence". Finally, throughout this paper we will also include Archibald Cox the first Watergate special prosecutor.
