James (Jim) Jones was a religious leader of the People’s Temple cult and is responsible for more the deaths of 909 men, women, and children through a mass suicide using cyanide-laced grape punch. Jones instructed the members to move to Redwood Valley, California for safety. At this point, Jones rejected the bible and began to preach that there was no heaven. In the late 1960s, Jones began revealing that the religion was secretly founded on communism ideals. In the early 1970s, Jones stated to the members of the Peoples Temple that there was no heaven and that they would have to build their own heaven on Earth.
Due to the immense growth in the membership in the Peoples Temples once it was moved to California, branches were opened in cities such as San Francisco, San Fernando, and Los Angeles, causing the Temple’s headquarters to be moved to San Francisco. The Peoples Temple became involved in racial movements in the area, increasing

Bigotry and stubbornness are perceptible attitudes of small-town communities in 1960's Western Australia. The notion that the inhabitants of the tight-knit community of Corrigan are racist, prejudiced and ignorant is explicated in Craig Silvey's coming of age novel, Jasper Jones. The bildungsroman is narrated by Charlie Bucktin, an adolescent from the small town of Corrigan. Charlie becomes unexpectedly involved with a local indigenous boy, Jasper, as they set out to discover the truth about the death of a young girl from their community. Throughout this quest, Charlie comes to many realisations about life, ultimately, that society can be very cruel. The prejudism and ignorance of the tight-knit community of Corrigan manifests in the
James Earl Jones- An Influential Actor James Earl Jones is famous for his many roles in voice acting. He has had roles such as Mufasa and Darth Vader. Although many people know him, most do not know that he grew up as a farm boy in Mississippi. He was also in the military and had no intent to become an actor.
John Paul Jones could be called somewhat of an “unsung hero” of the American Revolutionary War. His name is probably not as well recognized as people such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Paul Revere, but he still played an important part in the Revolutionary War. He was an important figure in several naval battles that were part of the Revolutionary War. Some even argue that John Paul Jones is one of the greatest and bravest officers in the Continental Navy (Pavao 2014).
The 1970s was a decade that was full of social reform and protests. People believed that they could change the world through social movements, in search of the hope that was lost with so much going on during this time. Jim Jones was one of these people, he wanted to change the world, and he had a vision of the Promised Land so he created the People’s Temple. The People’s Temple was a racially integrated church that Jones created to spread his beliefs on religion, socialism, and racial integrity. It was with these beliefs, paranoia, and his way with people that he convinced 909 people to commit suicide by drinking Kool-Aid with cyanide.
Jim Jones had many jobs before he became leader of the peoples temple. As a child he spent much of his time alone. He began preaching at 10 years old after going on weekly trips to church with a neighbor of his. He continued his strong religious beliefs when moved to Indianapolis with his mother. Jones became a minister at a local church and held racially integrated services to the church’s displeasure. During the mid 1950’s Jones opened his first church of The People’s Temple while still living in Indiana. As the cult grew in the 60’s Jones relocated to Northern California and soon after opened churches in San Francisco and Los Angeles. Followers of the People’s Temple often referred to him as ‘father’ or ‘Dad’.

The Jonestown massacre is a great example of people being manipulated and brainwashed. The fact that people can be manipulated to leave the states and go in the middle of the jungle is crazy but they thought it was for the best. Jim Jones the cult leader didn’t lie completely, he would tell parts of the truth convincing them his way was right and he told them Jonestown would be Utopia. In my opinion I do believe it could happen again, if someone is convincing enough and good at speaking it’s easy to believe they are right and even follow him or her. If it’s possible for this to happen again how could it happen in todays world?
Throughout Jim Jones childhood and adulthood Jim Jones was a very religious person which changed his experience towards many things in his lifetime. Jim Jones was born on May 13, 1931 and throughout his childhood “he was a strong student, especially in public speaking, but he had few friends. His overpowering zest turned off some, and he, in turn, disliked many typical teenage boy activities such as sports, and objected what he believed to be sinful behavior, such as dancing and drinking” (Biography.com Editors). Ever since his childhood, his religious beliefs had taken over his body and viewed many things against him throughout his
Some Live More Downstream than Others: Cancer, Gender, and Environmental Justice is an essay written by scholar and activist Jim Tarter. In his piece, he extrapolates on the connection between “environmental exploitation and human exploitation” by using both his personal and scholarly insights. His relationship with cancer is used to motivate and involve his readers to care about things like the environment and social problems we face today. He raises a highly sensitive question that is based on the clash of cancer vs. environment. Do they have a connection? I personally believe that Tarter is overthinking things but I can understand where he is coming from. Why not check all of your bases and search for the cause of cancer in an unclaimed root. Through his diagnosis, battle, and victory with cancer, he tries to make a life changing discovery.
The mass suicides, that took place under the influence of Reverend Jim Jones, can be explained from a sociological perspective. By looking at how the group dynamics played into the outcome one gets a better idea of the whys? of the massacre. The sociological explanation is but one way to explain this horrific event. It is , however, the only one explored in this essay for reasons of concision.
To be able to understand the thoughts behind James Jones leadership over his group of followers, you need to understand the story of Peoples Temple from the very beginning. The Peoples Temple was located in Indianapolis and were known as a social activist, they opened orphanages,
During a time when blacks were considered less than equals to whites, Jack Johnson refused to be oppressed by racist America. He was both unafraid and uncompromising. He went wherever he chose, did whatever he wanted, and controversially had sexual relations with whichever race of women he wanted.
