The primary economic problems that plagued the Post Bellum South include: First, cotton, which was the main crop, fell in demand. In turn, the price of the cotton decreased dramatically. Secondly, the labor system fell as there was no more slavery. Thirdly, there was a shortage of credit because of the impacts of the war and rural banks were few as well. This was hard especially on the freed men who had few resources and could only afford to do their purchases on credit. Additionally, merchants started charging 25 to 75 percent interest rate, normally depending on the race, on goods bought on credit and asked for a lien on cotton. 2.What was the primary factor that lead to the development of the jim crow? The primary factor that led to the development of the Jim Crow was to alienate poor whites and blacks who had started to form alliance against the elite in the South. Poor blacks and whites began forming a union that would help them fight the crop lien system, which had put most of them in debts that they were unable to pay. The government tried to segregate the two groups by using race. Business men tried to influence the government to allow them to conduct businesses with no restrictions by using Social Darwinism and Laissez-faire. The philosophies indicated that the government should intervene in the way businesses were conducted or the amount of wealth accumulated by big corporations. Courts, which were a part of the government manipulated laws in favor of big corporations. For instance, they allowed the development of railway by defining corporations as a person.
