Many people recognize Jim Carrey as the pet detective or the not-so-bright Lloyd Christmas, but during his commencement speech to the graduating class of 2014 at the Maharishi University of Management, he opens up to reveal a much deeper side of himself. While the speech he delivers is permeated with his traditional humor, Carrey also inspires his audience to think about how they want to conduct their lives. Carrey presents an effective argument for persuading college graduates who are entering the work field to not let fear control how they live. By successfully employing anecdote, analogy, and audience engagement, Carrey entices his audience to be willing to take risks and choose love over fear when approaching a career and other life …show more content…
Although he knew that his family could not afford a bike, he followed the advice of his substitute teacher and “prayed for one”, and continued life normally, without particularly looking for how this would be accomplished. Carrey then shares his later astonishment, saying, “two weeks later, I got home from school to find a brand-new mustang bike with a banana seat and easy rider handlebars” because a friend had entered Carrey’s name in a raffle without his knowledge. With this experience, Carrey gives an example of his own outlook on life—letting “the universe know what you want” and working towards goals while “letting go of how it might come to pass” has worked in his own life. Through sharing this positive experience, Carrey entices his audience to refuse choosing fear when things seem impossible, and instead choose hope and love. Carrey uses analogy as a method of expressing certain ideas to his audience. First, Carrey conveys the unpredictability of life by using an analogy of a cat that will “rub up against your leg and purr until you pick her up and start pettin’ her, and out of nowhere she’ll swat you in the face”. For Carrey’s audience of graduating college students, who are just about to enter the work force and other aspects of life, this analogy helps students understand that life will be unpredictable; both pleasant and painful. Since many have had
In this quote Dillard is analyzing self-awareness and the gift of life. She explains that there is no reason for one to want to stop transitions in life such as growing up and becoming aware since they develop a new sense of understanding from it. Understanding is viewed as a gift that all should be open to receiving as it does not erase our memories, but helps enrich them since we will understand our settings in a different light.
According to Marian Erickson, “Most of life is choices, and the rest is pure dumb luck.” Real people’s lives depend on this quote everyday, which leads to the outcome of each problem individuals face. In the passages, characterization of the main personas helps one understand the theme. Conflict and symbolism also help lead to the overall idea that life is not always guaranteed to be full of success. The book The Other Wes Moore, the poem “If,” and the informational text “The Art of Resilience” all share a common theme of how choices and luck contribute to the success of life.
More often than not the human race finds itself dispirited and lacking the necessary confidence to live life to the fullest. An average job, strange personality, or an excessive amount of self-consciousness can make a huge dent in the average person's confidence. However, former pro wrestler Mike Kinney would argue that “you are more than you think you are.” The strange and unique traits someone possesses can be seen as a confidence killer, or they can be “turned up” to transform yourself into the better version of you. Mike Kinney creates a highly effective argument through the strong use of pathos, his vibrant character, and his undoubted credibility.
Life is beautiful and mysterious. Therefore, there are things that seem to happen like what we expect but it actually results oppositely. The more we expect the more disappointed we will get when the outcome turns out wrong. That is the lesson I learned from reading the four essays by Chuck Klosterman: What We Talk About When We Talk About Ralph Sampson, Through a Glass, Blindly, Passion of the Garth and “Ha ha,” he said. ”Ha ha”.
As much as 30 percent of Northern California's garlic harvesters are under-aged children. Kids as young as six years old have voted in state-conducted union elections since they qualified as workers.
When I grow up, foods becomes popular especially processed food. I stayed alive and healthy because of those foods. Although now that I am more knowledgeable about foods, I realize that I do not need those food to survive. What I consumed everyday is very toxic and very unhealthy. When we get a chance to understand more about it, I realize and got inspired that I should go on a Plant-Based Diet. First of all, what is Plant-Based Diet? According to the article from Kaiser called The Plant-based Diet Booklet the author defines this plan as “This eating plan includes lots of plant foods in their whole, unprocessed form, such as vegetables, fruits, beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and small amounts of healthy fats. It does not include
No matter what a person’s race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation is, everyone should enjoy equality. In the speech Speech Upon the Removal of Confederate Monuments by Mitch Landrieu, the Mayor of New Orleans, the removal of the Confederate monuments in New Orleans is discussed. The speech emphasises the fact that the Confederacy was wrong pertaining to their treatment of African Americans, and instead of teaching history, the Confederate monuments convey an image of inequality and violence. Mitch Landrieu argues for the deconstruction of historic Confederate monuments through his allusions to past historic events to contrast the modern shift of equality, so he can call the people to action to deconstruct the monuments. Through the
Former Governor of Virginia, Jim Gilmore, is one the lesser known candidates on the Republican presidential ballot. Gilmore claims to be a “common sense conservative”(Court), and has seldom been seen by the public since announcing his candidacy for president. From September 9th to September 16th of 2015, Gilmore garnered some media attention for his appearance at an Iran Nuclear Deal rally and for not receiving an invitation to the highly televised CNN republican debate. All three types of media had different opinions and reactions to the Governor over the course of that week. Gilmore also used his own media to spread his message and directly contrast the negative publicity he received. Legacy media like the Wall Street Journal saw Gilmore
In his New York Times article “A Life Beyond Do What You Love” Gordon Marino poses the question "But is do what you love wisdom or malarkey?" after giving us an anecdote about students coming to him for career advice. The article which uses many rhetorical devices which make the audience think about their choices in careers and what you should and want to do. The author also cites different sources for his article and past life experiences. Marino then end his article by saying many great leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. did not pursue what he loved, but what was right and what would better society around him, prompting the audience yet again to think about their own choices. Marino effectively argues that doing what is needed should be seen as more important than doing what one love with the use of rhetorical questions, anecdote, hypophora and procatalepsis.
In Jamie’s speech, he begins straight away stating that four Americans will die due to the food that they eat. This statement made me come to a shocking realization and consequently brought my attention towards his presentation. The flow was weird when he jumped from the statistic to his self-introduction, but that may have been his goal.
“Can you choose something when you are forcefully and enthusiastically immersed in it at an age when the resources and information necessary for choosing are not yet yours?” (228). In A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace the audience is taken into the author’s life, from childhood to adulthood. Wallace went on different journeys and he tells the reality of all of them, both what he expected and what truly happened. He is trying to assure the audience that even though expectations are meant to tell someone exactly what will happen, do not believe that and follow your own path in life. The idea that expectations can be so unrealistic it can change a person until they understand reality and what it means is shown
Ryan White, a hemophiliac, who contracted AIDS from a blood transfusion, and was suspended from his current school in Kokomo, Indiana, in 1984. Ryan found out he had AIDS when he underwent a medical procedure to remove 2 inches of his lungs due to pneumonia. He got suspended from school because not many people knew how AIDS was spread, and people at Ryan's school assumed it could be spread from casual contact. Ryan decided to speak to congress about the situation he was in from contracting AIDS. Than switched schools. This new school was in Cicero, Indiana. Ryan's new school had experts come in and educate parents and students about how AIDS was spread.
For my rhetorical analysis, I chose the movie "Rocky Balboa". This speech gave me a lot of insight on how to take care of things and to deal with the consequences afterwards. Rocky's speech to his son “Rocky Balboa Jr.” was very inspirational and motivational. The purpose of this speech was to encourage you to fight for what you want no matter how many times you get pushed down. It taught me to be myself regardless of what other people will say and think. The speech was informative and persuasive. It was informative because Rocky informed his son with factual advice knowing that he has endured the something growing up. It was persuasive because he persuaded his son to be the best possible version of himself. The context/meaning of the
The persuasion scenario our group choose to observe is the events that happen in United States of America in 19th century. It’s the President Abraham Lincoln famous Gettysburg address. One of the main points for Lincoln when he giving this speech is to persuade both union and confederate (two different sides during the civil war) citizens to come join together to create the new equal and justice United States. This persuasion speech made me known why many people saw him as the great man. He did not antagonize, nor did he show disrespect to the dead, even those who fought for the Confederacy (who is oppose to Lincoln administration). He treated them all as people of one country, and honored them all equally. Lincoln’s respect for every man
Steve Jobs, one of the cofounders of Apple, delivered a speech to the graduates of Stanford University at their commencement ceremony. Although Steve Jobs was a college dropout, his speech was more inspirational than anything. Jobs shared three stories with the graduates. His first story was about connecting the dots, the next one was about finding love, and the last story was about death. The three most influential points that I got out of Job’s speech, was to never lose faith, trust in something, and don’t waste your time living someone’s else life.
