Jewish life in the Holocaust Even though manny where persecuted, the Jews had the most hardship in life during the holocaust. Millions were killed or died from other causes. The Jews were considered an outcast. They had to live in ghettos, be sent to work camps, and even have their own child inform the government about them. The Jews had to live in an area of housing known as a Ghetto. This is were the government took a group of Jews and put them into a dirty housing community. Disease outbreaks were quite frequent and deadly. Many people not only died from being sent away, but just from the diseases in the Ghettos. According to A Teacher’s Guide to the Holocaust, the ghettos were extremely dirty. Staying warm was very difficult during the freezing winter. There was a major food shortage that resulted in famine. Lots of Jews died of starvation. They had poor sanitation, with extreme over crowding causing people to have to share rooms and beds. Many places had ghettos that were had a barbed wire, brick and stone walls as their boundaries. Guards were placed at openings and gates of the ghettos.(Ghettos) The smallest ghetto held around 3,000 people. The largest ghetto, located in Warsaw, held around 400,000 people. Many of the people in the ghettos came from the local area or nearby. Around 1941, Jews were being deported from Germany to Poland to even further east. Jews were not allowed to leave the ghetto. If they did they would be killed on site. Gas vans were used in
The conditions that the Jews and other were put through were super horrible. They were forced into boxcars that didn’t have anything in them and they wondered where they were and where they were going. They stood in the boxcars for days with no food or water to keep them alive. (Joseph)(Source 3) Along their way to the concentration camps they were exposed to harsh weather. In the summer it was scorching hot and in the winter it was freezing cold. Since they were shoved amongst each other they suffered from suffocation. Along their journey many young and old died along the way (“The Holocaust”)(Source 2). Inside the boxcars there was no windows or anyway to breath. It was also very unsanitary because of the abundance of people in them and they didn’t have any water to at least wash themselves with. All they could do was stand there in the dark and wait (Joseph) (Source
During the Holocaust Jews were often forced from concentration camp to concentration camp where they would only get a ration of bread and soup each day and were often whipped or even killed for doing something wrong or not being strong enough to work. They were also required, during the year of 1942, to wear badges so they can easily be recognized by the Nazis and other non-Jews. The Nazis treated Jews like animals causing them to lose faith in god.
The Holocaust had mass murders, Deportation, and ethnic cleansing (Concentration Camps, 1933–1939). Over 6 Million Jewish people died, 3 Million Russians died, and 2 Million Polish Christians died. 90% of the jewish population in Poland were killed in the holocaust. ⅔ prisoners died at Auschwitz within half the time they were in there. Hitler was about to build over 1,000 concentration camps for these jews. All these people were taken away from their families, everything taken away! No baths No food most of the time. It was pretty much like the great depression.
Jewish families lived in very small rooms and didn’t have many things of their belongs since the germans just gave them a few minutes to get what they wanted. The ghettos were so bad that the Jews had to throw their own waste
The provision of food in the ghettos was inadequate, causing many people to starve or become harshly ill. Source One discusses experiences from life in the Lodz ghetto. It describes the way of how ‘it is hard to get bread; Jews are driven away from all the “queues”.’ This quote reveals that the Jews were treated harshly and prevented from receiving food. The level of sanitation and hygiene in the ghettos was appalling. Many Jewish men, women and children died from starvation and diseases such as typhus and typhoid. These diseases were a result of the Final Solution procedure and majorly impacted the lives, not only of the ones who died from them, but their families too. Jewish people were also beaten and forced to work while living in the ghettos. Source One talks about how ‘they were seized, hauled off to labour, and beaten to a pulp.’ This quote shows that the Jewish men, women and children were forced to do whatever the German officers wanted of them and if they disobeyed, they were severely punished. Women in the ghettos were often abused sexually. The German men would rape the Jewish women, and then generally kill them with the unborn child inside. This shows that Jewish men, women and children had their physical wellbeing impacted during the Final
Living in the ghetto was tough for the people because "hard labor(ing), over crowding, and starvation were the dominant features of life" and as a result "20 percent of the ghetto's population died." ("Lodz"). The Nazi's didn't care who died. It must have been that bad for about 20% of the population to die because of starvation and crowding. Most of the workers in the ghetto worked in the German Factories and received barely any food ration and they didn’t have any running water or a sewer system which made life even harder than not having enough food.
When the Germans invaded Poland, they processed ghettos in several Polish cities, where Jews were in hiding. The living conditions in the ghettos were: hunger, disease, and overcrowding killed tens of thousands. The Germans transported Jews from all over occupied Europe to these ghettos, modeled after the ghettos the Catholic Church had established all over Europe since the Middle Ages.
The doors were sealed shut so no jew would escape. “There are eighty of you in this wagon. If anyone is missing, you'll all be shot, like dogs”..(22) “ The heat, the thirst the pestilential stench, the suffocating lack of air.” (24) Jews were cramped up in small wagons headed off to Auschwitz the concentration camp. If one would escape all would be die. Many had no water and they didn't have a break to use the bathroom. Jews had it miserable for them. They no longer knew what freedom was. Many innocent jews died because of one man thinking it would be best to wipe off a whole complete race and have a pure white race which was not understandable at
Things got hard for the Jews in the Holocaust and who also survived. Ways of life changed. The Nazis changed everything about their ways and their beliefs. The people started questioning their belief in God, their morals of what they viewed themselves as, and also education changed immensely.
Ghettos Terrible things happened to the Jewish families during the Holocaust. Ghetto’s are one of the many parts of the Holocaust. Conditions were cruel and severe. There were shortages of food, supplies, and the children didn’t have the chance to go to school. This was an unfair way to treat them and they should have gotten the same respect everyone else got.
According to dicitonaity.com, a ghetto is “a section of a city, especially a thickly populated slum area, inhabited predominantly by members of an ethnic or other minority group, often as a result of social or economic restrictions, pressures, or hardships” (“Ghetto”). The five major ghettos were established in Warsaw, Lodz, Krakow, Lublin, and Lvov (“Holocaust Timeline: The Ghettos”). The Nazi Party used three different types of ghettos to isolate Jews from society. The three types were closed, open, and reconstruction ghettos (“Types of Ghettos”). Closed ghettos were the most common and often had high mortality rates as they were closed off with stone or brick walls, wooden fences, and barbed wire. The largest ghetto, Warsaw, was a closed ghetto and had over 400,000 people in an area of 1.3 squared miles (“Holocaust Timeline: The Ghettos”). Open ghettos had no physical barriers, but restrictions on entering and were often only in small towns used for temporary housing before relocating to a larger, often closed, ghetto. The majority of open ghettos were located in small towns, and in the countries of Poland, the occupied Soviet Union, and Transnistria. Lastly, deconstruction ghettos were tightly sealed off and only
The Nazis created a ton of Ghettos, which were very small and had terrible living conditions. People were starving due to the little amount
The ghettos were streets where Jewish people lived. The three main ghettos were Lodz, Warsaw, and Theresienstadt. It had horrible living conditions. They were non-sanitary, bad electricity, extremely crowded, and there was not enough food. Contagious diseases spread rapidly due to all of these bad conditions. Everyday children became orphaned, and many had to take care of younger
Around this time the Nazis came up with the term “The Final Solution” This meant to have all Jewish people segregated and put into ghettos, limiting their freedom and lives. People were evicted from their properties and also from their business just because they were Jews, and they were put in the “ghettos”. Life in the ghettos was unbearable and overcrowding. Specially when they have ten families living in one small apartment. They were also limited on the food that they could buy, since Nazis did not let them buy enough food for them and their family they were only aloud to buy small amounts, they were trying to make the Jewish starve. Jewish kids also sneak out through small openings in the ghetto walls to smuggle food, but if they got caught they were going to be severely punished. The housing inside ghettos were unsanitary specially when plumping broke down, and human waste was thrown in the streets along with garbage and caused contagious diseases that spread rapidly in the ghettos. Many people died every day in the ghettos because of the terrible conditions they lived and some
