Conformity and Rebellion in Conversion of the Jews Though it seems like a stereotype, all teenagers, at some point, choose to rebel against authority figures or conform with their friends. Part of growing up means becoming the person God intends you to be and finding out how to survive, or be independent, on your own. Conformity and rebellion, two issues that each human being has experienced, have great effects not only on the conformist and rebel, but on the people around them as well. The Emancipation forever altered the status of Jews in the West because it established the principle that all people who engaged positively on behalf of the nation should be entitled to the same rights and responsibilities of citizenship. It also affected the religious practice for the Jewish people. For the first time in thousands of years, the Jews found themselves restricted from laws. They can send their children to public schools, leans any craft, were free to dress like other Europeans, etc. This lifestyle may have caused many Jews to convert to Christianity.

Immigrants of Hispanic and Jewish groups are a few of the many groups that immigrated to Washington. Hispanics immigrated from countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Columbia, Nicaragua, Chile and Argentina. The Jewish immigrants mostly came from Russia, Germany, Poland regions in Europe. They both came to Washington for same reasons, they wanted better job opportunities and to be able to participate in politics. As such they also brought their culture to Washington State.

Religion is a complicated subject. I feel that Ozzie certainly had problems with people believing things for bad reasons. Bad reasons being that just because it is in a holy book that it is true or false. Philip Roth describing himself as a Jew who is an author and not a Jewish author I think is indicative of what he is trying to say in the story. I think that the author is trying to show how blind faith and a closed mind are bad traits that he does not like.

Jewish is a minority group is probable to be consumed by host society. This is something which is inevitable in the assimilation within society. Usually it takes place in several dimensions like cultural, institutional, residential, social and familial. However these dimensions are not dependent. For example in acculturation, this does not lead to residential integration. Even with residential integration, it might not lead to socializing across group lines. Theoretically, all kinds of acculturation and integration are compatible with continued group identity. Another form of total assimilation is the familial level integration of a minority group with he larger society. This eventually lead to the disappearance of the identifiable group. As

Assimilation is a pattern of different groups in relationships with each other in which the minorities of these groups is voluntarily, encouraged or even sometimes forced to blend with the majority of the group. Eventually, after this takes place the minorities’ distinct culture, belief and looks disappear into the majority group. The minority group adapts the language, norms and values of the larger group.

In the short story, The Conversion of the Jews, Philip Roth discusses the constant oppressive behaviour that religious figures have, and the rebellious attitudes of the youth. Rabbi Binder is a one sided person who is never open to the views of others. He sees Ozzie Freedman, the questionable protagonist of the story, as his mission to enforce religion and to never allow free thought. Philip Roth points out the hypocrisy of religion in his short story, The Conversion of the Jews, where he shows underlying themes that explain the extreme actions people use to prove their religion never have any long lasting benefits or deep changes.

Every religion has its own set of contradictions and hypocrisies and continues to be a recurring trait found within its believers. Philip Roth’s short story, “The Conversion of the Jews,”illustrates an adolescent boy’s journey into adulthood and discovery of his own identity as he questions his religion and ultimately emancipates himself from the restrictive forces of his peers.
