In the fall of 1970, three long-haired men sought to register to attend Tyler Junior College in the fall semester. When they arrived to register, they were snubbed by a school official after receiving a copy of the dress code, due to the length of their hair. They were informed that they would be allowed to attend the college upon cutting their hair to the required length. After discussing the injustice of this act, these three men filed a suit against the dress code of Tyler Junior College. The plaintiffs claimed the portion of the dress code regarding hair length was a violation of their constitutional rights, specifically the rights afforded to them under the fourteenth amendment.

Matthew Waterhouse is a genial young man who I have had the pleasure of getting to know over the past 3 years. I have had Matthew in 2 courses to this point, Business Dynamics as a freshman and Economics this year as a senior. Matthew earned an A+ in Business Dynamics and has displayed the same skill and work ethic that gives me confidence the results in Economics will be the same. Matthew’s success in academics as evidenced by his consistent inclusion on our honor roll can be directly attributed to his hard work and his strong academic aptitudes.
