The ideal residence hall community is one where the students and RA can make a community that is comfortable, fun, and respectful. In Davidson Hall, a first-year dorm, many students will come in afraid, not knowing what college will be like. Most students start to feel lonely and need friends and others to talk to. A potential program to be held is simply a "Rutgers Game Night". Games would be held with different themes on the University to help the residents learn more about where they live and the many resources available. An example would be Rutgers Jeopardy. Jeopardy makes it easy for teams to connect and communicate to find answers, while setting a foundation for friendships. People tend to connect to others by simply enjoying different
JACKSONVILLE, FLA - Here at Jacksonville University there is only one residential hall that has the perfect atmosphere for young adults, giving its residents a certain sense of independence while still giving its residents a crutch to lean on.
Further, your organization serves more than 470,000 alumni from all university locations and advances Rutgers University by engaging all graduates. I understand that alumni are invited to reconnect with colleagues and their university with a range of social, cultural, and educational activities planned (Rutgers
We had field day and other activities to bond as a dorm. Field day was where dorms compete against dorms. In our dorm, we came up of several cheers and dances, we designed our own team clothes and we helped each other get ready. This was one of the most memorable day for me, as we all worked as a team and cheered for each other. There were races like the three legged race, sack jump, spin race and much more. I was also able to gain more exposure and establish friendships with people from around the world. These ranges from California to Florida London to Germany, Indonesia to Dubai. These are some of my other
Homecoming is one of the most important and celebrated week at college. Homecoming is an American tradition named from “coming home” (Huynh, T 2015, October 21). One of the first colleges to have a homecoming was Harvard. It was during a football game against Yale that they invited back their Alumnis in the 1870s (Cramton, I. n.d.). The Harvard vs. Yale homecoming was to get together and have a good time there at the game while everyone catch up and celebrate their school pride. For most colleges, homecoming week provides a week long of activities for students on campus. Student Events Team or other students involvement club will hold parties, parades, rallies, football games, and concerts that week. Every school is different and will do something
I enjoyed the fallacy Jeopardy game a lot; I think is a great tool to get us ready for the quiz we must take this week. I planned to play it again since I missed a few of them. A lot of these names are completely new to me, I must continue to read and study the names and their definitions in order to be able to identify them by just reading the names. When I read the fallacy Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, I honestly thought I was reading a completely different
Freshman learning communities (FLC) are programs where 15 to 30 first-year students register for several general-education courses that focus on a common theme (Jaffee, 2004). Although there are several different types of learning communities, they all are designed for the same purposes. One of the main purposes in implementing freshman learning communities is to assist the students in their transition to a new environment. This acclimation involves becoming better acquainted with the other students, faculty members, campus culture, and academic expectations. However, with freshman learning communities also come negative aspects. Both facets must be evaluated to determine if freshman learning communities are effective.
The Department of Student Life is the department that is over all of the Clubs and recreation at the college. One way that Student Life has promoted change is allowance of certain clubs that represents students from all lifestyles. One such club that has started because of this is the Ally club, which is Bainbridge State College’s version of the Gay-Straight Alliance, and the Men Empowering Men club, which was a club founded to help increase African-American Men retention and graduation rates. It is important for all students to feel like they belong at their college regardless of sexual orientation or race and these clubs help accomplish
Less than a mile from Fenway Park, a seven minute walk from the MFA, and on the banks of the Charles River, Boston University really throws its students right into the heart of the best city in the world. However, there are many colleges in Boston, what makes Boston University truly unique is the way it ensures students know how to navigate and really become a part of the Boston community. When I toured Boston University I was amazed at all the opportunities that I saw to make sure their students do not feel lost and always feel like they have a sense of community. I was shocked that in such a big city, at such a large school, I was seeing a bunch of small communities that had formed whether it was a study group, a floor in the residence halls, or a few friends that were eating lunch together. That is what makes or breaks a person's time in college. During the college years people are growing, changing, and figuring out just exactly they are. Without the right community this can be really difficult and almost impossible.
The residents have the opportunity to form new friendships and socialize with their peers while enjoying exciting events that are absolutely life enriching!
Residence Life has implemented 15 residential learning communities such as the Engineering Community, Global Village, and Substance Free Community. Each of these communities were developed to help students explore future careers and majors, bond with others who have similar interests, and succeed in a safe and environment (Residential Learning Communities). The front desks within each residence hall are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This provides maximum convenience for residents to receive a keys, print anytime of day, and have questions answered. Another innovative thing within Residence Life is program and event planning for residents. In each hall on campus thousands of dollars of funding goes toward putting on programs for residents to get involved and learn something new.
“MC is so boring that I think I’m planning on transferring in the spring,” said several of my friends and many other MC students. This may seem like a small problem to some, but it could result in an even larger problem that could affect MC’s standing as a college. Many students feel as though MC is not doing enough to make them feel included and often seek to transfer to another university/college where they will not have this problem. This could also lead some students to feel like college just is not for them, which could lead then to drop out. Not having events where everyone can be included could hurt MC’s enrollment rate, which in time could have a negative impact on MC’s future. A simple solution to fix this problem before it starts to affect MC would be to increase the budget of the Campus Activity Broad
With my research, I would like to determine what students choose to do with their weekend time. One of the factors that I did not consider was whether the school would provide their students things on the weekend to do so that they would be more willing to stay. At Kilgore College in Texas ahs done just that, Kilgore has built a lounge that is not only a safe environment for the students, but is also entertaining. The KC Student Center contains many different opportunities for students to come and blow of the pressures that accompany being a college student, some of the things in the center for students to do include pool, Ping-Pong, foosball tables, as well as many video games like the X-box 360, Nintendo Wii, and the PlayStation 3. While this center is open throughout the weeks during the school months, the weekends always see a high influx of students, from what can be gathered from the article every weekend the school host’s video game tournaments that include cash prizes to the winners. In the article what I learned was that with this center available to students not only were they more willing to stay on campus during the weekends, but they also felt safer as well as happier about the experience that they were receiving from Kilgore College during their undergraduate career at the school.
The athletics department reserves a specific amount of spaces per year for their athletes to live on-campus because of being under contract. Effects of this amount of space is continuing to kick out upperclassmen that want and need the benefits of on-campus living such as learning communities, residential colleges, etc. Texas State is growing fast and now experiencing limited space and money to expand on-campus living in order to accommodate incoming and returning students and adhere its mission for education policy. The negative effects of this problem are that a percentage of freshmen, as well as a large percentage of upperclassmen, are now not receiving the opportunities that living on-campus provides because there is no structure off-campus. For instance, SLAC is not mandatory, and neither are tutors. By living in the dorms, or on-campus apartments and suites, students have services readily available to them like residential colleges and learning communities. Residential colleges are “living-learning communities” where students live and go to class with people in the same major. In each room are students who have the same schedules. In each residential college, tutors are available, as well as study groups, and seeing as everyone in that building are taking the same tests at the same time this provides a strong academic community. Learning communities are specifically for a certain dorm or apartment
As a current member of the relatively small Women in Science and Engineering residential community at the University of Michigan, I can say from experience that one of the most valuable benefits of this living style is the automatic companionship that it affords. Simply living in this certain space affords every individual an automatic membership in a group, and this shared membership fosters a sense of community. It’s a basis for relationships - even if one member has relatively little in common with another, the fact that both people live in the same community creates an opportunity to connect that would likely not exist in the absence of that shared membership.
When walking around campus on the weekends, whether the weather is nice or not, you encounter very few people if any. You can’t help wondering where everyone is. You ponder maybe they went home or they are going off campus with their friends to go to the mall or party. It is not beneficial that numerous people leave campus on the weekends. If students stay on campus, they are cooped up in their dorm rooms all day not wanting to leave. A major aspect of college besides acquiring an education is getting to be social and connect with your school and the people around you. That is not even possible, despite the fact that you hardly ever run across a good deal of people. The fact is, Walsh University does not provide nearly enough weekend activities to keep students on campus. Weekend activities need to be provided not only for the social aspect, but for an abundance of more reasons. Students can be creative and relieve some of their weeks stress through activities. Furthermore, students can obtain some physical activity or even learn some leadership skills. Having a movie night each Friday night, hosting parties that don’t involve alcohol, or even putting on a Dodgeball tournament in the gym, can help keep students on campus. Providing more activities will help keep students on campus and involved; in view of the fact that, then there will be activities to do and they will be kept busy while having fun. Walsh University needs to
