Abstract
This research paper mainly focuses on Jean Bartik (1994-2011) journey towards computer programming and her great contributions, works and her experience from the work to this computer world.
Introduction [1]
Jean Bartik, Born on 1924 in Missouri and named as Betty Jean Jennings. As all her family members were professionally teachers she is good at education and she opted for mathematics as a major from Northwest Missouri State Teachers college. At that time she was only the student who selected mathematics as a major with different courses like calculus and Astronomy. She is accompanied by another student and several other students who were in naval training for some other different courses. She used to perform well in studies from childhood. As she opted for different mathematics courses than others, special professors were appointed to teach her the particular courses she opted. She is only the student to be majored from mathematics from that college.

After Completion of her under graduation she applied for a job in IBM and applied for a “computer” job in Moore School at University of Pennsylvania. “Computer” is a term used as a position like “professor”, “scientist”, “programmer”. At that time World War 2 was going on and there is a need for army to calculate the trajectories for firing tables of guns. These trajectories were used to help the soldiers how to fire guns like the angle to fire, calculating distance in
In 1944, she enrolled at Columbia University as a doctoral student, the timing of her enrolment helped her as World War II meant that employers were actively looking to employ women to fill the jobs that the men who had been sent to war had left
In chapters 9-16 of Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, the story shifts more towards the plights and character interactions of the young minister, Arthur Dimmesdale, and Roger Chillingworth. Due to the poor health of Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, as the town physician, had come to live with him, and the two had become close friends. For seven years, Chillingworth did his best to tend to the minister while simultaneously tormenting him with psychological barbs by expounding on the necessity of confessing one's sins. Dimmesdale is not aware that Chillingworth is Hester's husband or that he knows Dimmesdale was her lover, but he does not need this incentive to be plagued by guilt. The man routinely attempts to atone for his sins by self-flagellation, starvation, and sleep-deprivation, all in
Katherine Johnson is a mathematician who worked for NASA’s aeronautics program. She is currently 99 years old and was born in August 26, 1918. She was born and raised in white Sulphur Springs in West Virginia. She has 4 older siblings, and her mother, Joylette Coleman, was a school teacher while her dad, Joshua Coleman, was a handyman and farmer. She has a natural talent for math at a young age, but the schools in her county didn’t have schools for african americans past the 8th grade. Thus her parents took her to Institute, Virginia, at the time she was only 10 years old, to continue her education. She graduated high school at 14 then went into college at West Virginia State
When people think about mathematicians, they typically refer to white, doctorate-educated male. However, there are more women budding into the field of mathematics. This paper will focus on one special woman, an African-American woman by the name of Evelyn Boyd Granville. She is not the first African-American woman to receive a doctorate in mathematics, but she, unlike Euphemia Lofton Haynes, stayed more out of the education field and primarily worked for NASA, contributing to many expeditions in space. Her contributions have inspired many young girls to look into and pursue a career in the field of mathematics.
In her twenties Clara decided to expand her education further by attending the Clinton Liberal institute for higher learning. There she studied analytic geometry, calculus, astronomy, mathematics and natural science in addition to French, German, ancient history, philosophy and religion (Pryor 1987). With her highly atypical education for a woman of that time, Clara continued the close pupil-teacher relationships she had enjoyed in her earlier schooling.
As we read Jack London’s The Call of The Wild and To Build A Fire, we interpreted that the books have a few comparisons, but differ at the same time. Both of the books are based on the Yukon during the gold rush, and they both persevere with the situations they are given. The second similarity between the two is that in both novels, they involve the sled dogs. In To Build A Fire, we saw that the man was on an adventure and he needed to build fires to survive, but he did not succeed. In The Call of The Wild, we got to see the growth in Buck as he eventually became a strong sled dog. The differences in these examples is that in The Call of The Wild, Buck has a good ending to life, but the man does not.
Marjorie Lee Browne was a extrusive mathematician right from her childhood. Dr. Lee Browne was mostly inspired by both her parents. Though most of her math genius was acquired from her father, who himself was popular in his area as a “math wizard” and passed on his love for the subject to his daughter. Thus, in 1949, she became the third African-American women who graduated with a Ph.D in her field becoming a pioneer for African American women in mathematics.
I have had the pleasure of teaching Savannah Guelda in class for three years. As an 8th grader, she chose to arrive to school an hour early in order to take Advanced Geometry at the high school. Last year, she was in my Pre-Calculus class as a sophomore, and currently she is in my AP Calculus class as a junior. Savannah’s greatest academic strength is her persistence. She will always continue to struggle through the most challenging problems to determine the solution. I can often find her arriving at school early to ask me a question or clarify something that she has worked on. Not only satisfied with the answer, she wants to accomplish the deeper understanding of what she is learning in mathematics.
With General Motors participating in a federal government bailout and becoming debt-free, it has set the future standards very high (Kinicki & Williams, 2013). Increasing the profit margin by 4% to provide a 10% profit margin would set GM ahead of other automobile industry competitors. The bailout also released GM from federal corporate taxes for several years in the future. This in itself is a tremendous cost savings.
In a world that is currently dominated by computers, it’s hard to imagine what it was like before they were invented. Though computers only began having a major influence in the last 60 years, the idea for them was first conceived almost 200 years ago. This technology would not have been possible without the work of Ada Lovelace, who is considered one of the pioneers in the field of computer programming. She had a vision of the possible benefits and capabilities of a computing machine. Even though she would never see her vision become a reality, her legacy and work had a lasting impact on the future of technology. However, during her lifetime she experienced multiple setbacks in pursuing her education
Vladimir de Jesus is a student of LaGuardia Community College and his major is in art. Mr. de Jesus is facing many obstacles as a student because he has one daughter, who he needs to take care of full time. Also, in this family, he has no one to support him financially and mentally. Mr. de Jesus does get finical aid, but it is not enough. Another obstacle he is facing is that he had failed math 90 for the third times. According to the author, more than 60 percent of Community College student have to take developmental math courses and 70 percent of students do not pass. The college made some change in their math course by getting the students to take more statistics-based math course because students who took statistics-based
There are few women that have made an impact on the math society compared with the number of men. A person can ramble off names such as Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, Pythagoras of Samos, and Jean-François Niceron. Where are the women mathematicians? This paper will examine the lives of women that have made an impact on the world of
As we live in the 21st century, development of science and technology grow very quickly. As far as I have known the field of computer application continuously expanding, and the rapid development of science and technology. It has become necessary in various areas of the goods. Perhaps in the near future, we carry the computers, cell phones and other digital products is not the way with the hands in pocket. Lohr claims that computer science is “young
In my youth, I was often told by adults that I was bad at math. Many of my teachers had given up on me throughout my schooling. Growing up knowing and hearing these things caused me to have a phobia of math and it negatively impacted my self-esteem. However, Dr. Bourke’s class was not like every other math class. I learned a lot about myself that semester, I was not bad at
It is universally agreeable that with the advent of Computer technology, every ambitious and enthusiastic individual is really obsessed with the idea of doing computer science at graduate level because it seems to have created a zeal and enthusiasm in the hearts of youth, particularly those who aspire to be marked as high achievers. I, for one, seem to have been enchanted by these computer applications as they have made the world smaller, speaking in terms of globalization. I have no hesitation to add that core computerization alone is the suitable answer to all the areas unexploited and to the areas waiting for development. It has always been a fascination for me about how computers work, how these applications are designed and what can be the newer ways to explore the world of computers to make our world better. This interest became a passion for me when I was exposed to computer science basics, during my middle school. Pursuing computer science engineering at undergraduate level, further propelled my passion for computer science along with providing me a deeper insight and in-depth understanding of the subject. After completing my under graduation in Computer Science, I am willing to expedite my research interest and a masters degree seemed the most appropriate choice for realizing my aspirations.
