Jazz Band Research Paper

Yes, I feel the term "cool jazz" is a good one to describe the music of Stan Getz, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis because they're sound was softer than that of Bop. They rarely used vibrato and played with low levels of volume. The sound they displayed was that of a relaxing feeling. Their music wasn't as loud and complex as the sound of Bop. It is very mellow and subdued, and the term "cool" fits it perfectly.

It was a misty day on the way to contest. What seemed like an average day for the Davis Marching band would turn into a spoopy tragedy. Almost all quiet, upon the band bus that early morning. Not an instrument was tuning, not even Issac was listening to music. (As he usually was) Meanwhile, those in the back laughed and chatted all the way to the Marching contest at ECU, while others kept to themselves with music or low conversations. Then all of a sudden on their ride, the bus was filled with screams of the name “MATT!” in the of a Broken Bow bus; which had the memorable Matt inside. Though all the other Broken Bowians were in confusion, Matt was in utter joy while smiling at Ben.

I started band in the 6th grade, I honestly thought that I wasn’t going to make it to my senior year, but here I am a senior in band. I am not forced to be in band I can get out at anytime anyday, but I choose not to. It is hard when you are marching and it feels like 100+ degrees. You feel like you want to pass out, but you just have to suck it up and be tough. Throughout the years I have been in band I have created friendships. I have my closest friends in band. I have created many memories in band that will last a lifetime, that I will share one day with my kids. I do not know what I would do without band. Getting in band has been the best decision I have ever made. Band has been the highlight of my high school years. One of the scariest moments I have experienced in band was when we messed up at U.I.L. contest, I was terrified I did not want us to make a 2, it all happened so fast. It was time to get our results, we made a 1, I was so happy. The judges said that if you were to close your eyes and listening to us, you would not know we messed up. We never stopped playing and we recovered so fast, we were so matured when this happened. Band takes up

Jazz Musician. He was born Charlie J. Allen in Jackson, Mississippi, but was raised in Chicago. He graduated from high school and began playing music during the early 1920s. His musical instrument of choice was the trumpet and he soon became a session trumpet player for such jazz greats as Hugh Swift, Billy Butler, Don Pasquall, Dave Peyton, Doc Cook, Clifford "Klarinet" King and the extensive ensemble of Johnny Long. He joined Earl Hine's band in 1931 and would go onto play with him until 1934. With Hines' he played on some of his classic recordings such as "Mad House", "Darkness", and "Cavernism", among many others. He also played a stint with the Duke Ellington Orchestra beginning in 1935, but never recorded any solos with Duke's orchestra.

Congratulations to the students in 7th and 8th grade who spent a whole weekend at UMKC for the UMKC Honor Band and Orchestra. These students were nominated by their peers and teachers and selected by the UMKC staff. The nominees had to perform a solo piece to audition for seating. There were more than 25 other local middle schools participating in this festival, and Prairie Star did quite well with a whopping 13 students accepted to the festival.

I have played trumpet since I was in the fourth grade -- that makes a grand total of 8 years. I had always taken private lesson and taken a keen interest in perfecting the instrument. At the beginning of high school, I decided to switch teachers and start working towards the district band audition. Just like with everything else I do, I was going to put all my effort into making district band. To be honest, I did not think I was going to make district band freshman year of high school simply because it was my first time auditioning. But when it was all said and done, I received a spot in the district band ensemble. It was the best musical experience I have ever had. I have never heard so many great musicians together before, and to be a part of it was absolutely incredible. I knew that I had to do anything I could to be a part of this group year

My sophomore year I tried out just to go through the process and be prepared, but my junior year I tried out for real. I was trying out as a minority. I was the youngest junior on the line, now the only girl on the line, and I had been on snare the least amount of everyone else on snare. After a week had gone by, we had our band banquet. During the banquet they would announce all of the new section leaders. They took us into the hall and I was told I was the new section leader for the drumline. This role is held very high in the Northgate Marching Band, because if you hold this position, you are a leader of the band. Now that I had the title I needed to accomplish one more thing. In drumline we have a center snare. The center snare is the most advanced player on the line, they count off all the exercises and they are the person you listen to when playing. Our audition process was intense, because again I was the one with the least experience on snare. I absorbed every piece of criticism I received and I applied every fix to better myself as a

About three weeks into marching season, a spot opened up. Of course, I had to audition for the spot with the other alternates, but I was successful in winning a marching spot at that time and have never lost it. I also worked hard on becoming a better musician. I drastically increased my practice time and was fortunate enough to be able to hire a private tutor to improve my musical abilities. Now in my senior year I am in the top band and I am on the varsity marching squad. I have even obtained a leadership role in the band as a rank leader. As a rank leader I am a mentor and coach for several other students in the marching band. I really feel like I am providing these student the same thing that Zack Santos provided for me. My junior year of high school I auditioned and became a drum major. This means that I am one of the leaders of the band, and my voice is one of the ones that needs to be heard. Marching band was one of the most difficult/challenging activity systems that I have ever done in my life. But at the same time it was an inspirational and motivating aspect of my life. The very first thing it taught me was the definition of hard work. This was because I spent hundreds of hours to my dedication and devotion to band marching around the field in the hot sun every day. Even though there were times when I wanted to quit; one such instance was when we were out performed by another school, other times it was becuase of the teacher being a little too hard on me when I first started. Despite setbacks such as these, I had an ardent attraction to marching band, mainly because in middle school I was a part of concert band, which made me love music. The biggest, reason why I chose to do marching band, aside from my enjoyment of music, was because towards the end of my eighth grade year my middle school band director told us about a huge opportunity that we had coming up to become a part of the high school across the street marching band. High school has never been the worst years of my life. It has been difficult, but I had never felt like it was truly wonderful or meaningful until this year. This past summer, I joined the marching band, and since then my life has changed drastically. Marching band has increased the quality of my high school life, given me the opportunity to impact others, and taught me more about myself than I knew before. Being in marching band, I have made an abundant amount of friendships that never before have I experienced.

¨For me it's that sense of Swing that drove the big band era. Its dance music...that makes people smile and have a good time.¨ (Aaron Weinstein). Swing did leave a large and impactful markon the world of music and as Weinstein said it made people have a good time and smile when they felt like they couldn't smile anymore. Also, if Swing managed to impact an entire genre of influential Jazz music then it must have had been an influential period in music with its musicians, enriching history, and its eventual demise.

To me, marching band was the most important activity I have participated in throughout my highschool career. The reason being part of the band is so important to me is because, for everyone who is in it, it more than just a school club. After four years of playing music, sharing experiences, and getting through high school with the same friends, these friends become family. The marching band to me is a second family, and to have this family is a feeling I cannot describe. Even though we all come from a different background and different lives, we all share the same uniting factor, which is the love to play music and not just that, but to share that love with everyone around them.

As you are well aware I’m writing to you because this is an assignment for my jazz class and you wanted to know more about what I have been doing here on campus. Today is Friday and before I start to explain my day to you I just want to say it was short so I won’t be able to write as much as I have been.
