Jason: The Ancient Greek Mythological Hero

He fought with exceptional strength. He did not give up as the monsters came from all around him. When he was fighting the evil goddess Khione to protect his friends, he lost his spear and resorted to using a wooden plank, “Jason hefted his icy wooden plank—a stupid weapon to die fighting with—and the monsters charged” (Riordan 143). He confronts this battle with absolute bravery and completes the most courageous task to protect his friends. Jason unlocked his inner demigod abilities and faced Porphyrion, the king of giants. “Half flying, half leaping, Jason landed on the giant’s scaly reptilian knee and climbed up the giant’s arm before Porphyrion even realized what had happened” (Riordan 147). Jason finds the courage in him to battle the king of the giants who can only be defeated with the help of a god. In discussions of The Ultimate Gift one controversial issue has been when Jason will receive his gift. On the one had, Red argues Jason must be patience and learn the value of hard work and he will be rewarded. On the other hand, Jason contends to know the gift he is working towards. In chapter three after Jason has a fit about Reds video, he flies out to Gus ranch to learn how to work. Jason overslept and Gus is already not happy with his attitude and work ethic so tears the fence post down to nonverbally show Jason he is disappointed. Jason understands Gus negative message so he starts putting in effort in and doing a good job. As Gus goes to get Jason he sees that the fence is put together well. Aeetes was used to getting visitors who had come for the fleece, and had devised a test for quickly getting rid of them. He had a standing challenge to give up the fleece to anyone who could tame two fire-breathing bulls and then use them to plow a field with dragon's teeth. Jason was stumped by how to pass this quest and was saved at the last moment by Aeetes own daughter Medea, who gave him a potion of wild herbs that would protect him from the fiery breath of the bulls. With the help, Jason easily tamed the bulls, and began to sow the field, but noticed that where he had put the teeth, soldiers were springing up from the ground. Jason hid from them, most cowardly, but then came up with a plan for getting rid of them. He picked up a huge stone and threw it into the middle of the mass of soldiers, killing one. A quarrel immediately started amongst the soldiers over who had thrown the rock, and a fight broke out, killing all but a few, whom Jason was able to easily overcome. With the help of Medea, Jason was able to steal the fleece from its guardian, a dragon, by putting it to sleep, and escape from Colchis.

He is the lead of the group set on the quest to save Hera. Jason is a brave and strong character. The first of the two that will be supported is his bravery. As it was stated before he was with Leo and Piper at the Grand Canyon, According to Rick Riordan “He clenched is fist and got ready to charge” (22). Jason decided to fight even though he did not know the limit of his abilities, and what abilities he actually had.

Jason agrees happily, raring for an adventure and immediately seeks out a ship. He encounters a shipwright named Argus who builds a magnificent boat with the power to speak and grant prophecies and in a rather egotistical manner he named the ship Argo Navis after himself. Jason then assembled a large crew of heroes and demigods from ancient Greece that together called themselves the Argonauts consisting of Heracles and his lover Hylas, Zetes and Calais, Orpheus, Castor and Polydeuces, and many more. The concept of an epic hero ordains in most capacities to be born into their position, subsequently having to prove themselves worthy of said position, eventually excelling their birth circumstances and achieving greatness. This is true of most epic heroes, being either demigods, royalty, or both. Hercules is a demigod (explaining his astounding feats of strength and will), Aeneas is a demigod and of a royal bloodline, Odysseus is essentially blessed by the gods and king of Ithica. Those characters’ qualities of birth can be definitively classified as happenstantial luck. Yet, is it luck if one’s powers are inexplicably unique and inherent, not being bestowed? The most enigmatic, yet prominent epic hero who defies the trope of born luck seems to be the Anglo-Saxon character of Beowulf.

All heroes within a story technically undergo a type of journey, be it spiritual, mental, or physical. The breakdown of this journey was first introduced and analyzed by Joseph Campbell. The concept of the hero’s journey is used to describe the adventures of someone who accomplishes great tasks within the plot of the story (Hero’s Journey). Raja Vikram is the hero within the traditional Indian folktale Raja Vikram and the Princess of China, and his story could be considered a hero’s journey. A majority of hero’s journeys follow a specific archetype, but some also deviate from that structured idea and put the hero on a journey through a different path. People have their own preferences on certain physical attributes when it comes to choosing. For instance, people tend to prefer a certain shade of color and may pick out something based on outer characteristics, rather than quality or use. Generally, when people go shopping, they scan the aisles for the most eye-attractive things and will likely buy these. But, if they are looking for a authentic skinned purse, would a prettier, fake replica attract more of their attention? The book Heroes, Gods and Monsters of Greek Myths by Bernard Evslin reflects over modern day life by incorporating Greek tales to show that appearance plays an unfavorable role in human thought. These myths are relevant because they teach people that the excessive concern over physical appearance leads to negative outcomes.

Odysseus, a man of royal blood, king of Ithaca, husband and father. Cast into war for a journey no rational human thought he could return from. In The Odyssey, Homer presents Odysseus as an epic hero through three main epic hero characteristics: being a great warrior, traveling over a vast setting, as well as facing supernatural foes and receiving supernatural help. Odysseus can be compared and contrasted with Frank Porter from Morgan Matson’s Since You’ve Been Gone through his easygoing character, loveable nature and his willingness to help others.

Odysseus is one of the greatest epic heros in the history of literature. The Odyssey, by Homer, is an epic poem, which depicts the journey home of Odysseus. Angering many gods, this voyage takes him through multiple obstacles, and ends up taking almost twenty years longer than it should've. Throughout his journey, “The Son of Laertes” must get his crew out of trouble multiple times. He uses his intellect and other strengths to do so, and never gives up, no matter the circumstance. Even after losing everything he needs in a storm worthy of the gods, Odysseus still never gives up, and gets himself out of trouble yet again. Throughout his entire journey, coming home from the Trojan War, Odysseus repeatedly uses many heroic traits to get himself and his crew out of many unfortunate situations. These heroic traits, how Odysseus uses them, and the steps of his journey all come together to illustrate that he is an epic hero. Odysseus characterizes himself as an epic hero based on how he almost perfectly follows the characteristics of an epic hero, gets his crew out of trouble multiple times, and follows the Hero's Journey.

When Hercules returned to King Eurystheus palace after completing the 12th laborer, he was quickly assigned another task. “Fetch me the silver egg of the tusked bird that lives in the forest of Drimos,” commanded King Eurystheus. This was a very dangerous task that no man had ever succeeded in and Hera knew that. In order to get the egg, Hercules had to run a long distance to the forest. Then, Hercules would have to climb an enormous tree that was about three hundred feet tall. Hera hoped that even if Hercules managed to climb the tree, he would have trouble getting past the mother of the eggs. The Tusk birds were vicious creatures that had two gigantic tusks that could pierce through steel and they would do anything to protect their young. But then again, Hercules wasn’t an ordinary man. He was a mighty hero who was strong as an ox and quick-witted.

The story of Jason, might not sound strange living in the time we are i.e. the present, is a well-known myth of betrayal and revenge. It is one of the oldest myths of a hero’s quest. The hero’s quest is one of the most commonly portrayed mythological story types. A quest is a journey where the hero must overcome his or her own faults and weaknesses to reemerge as a valuable member of their society. In general, a quest begins when a hero is called to action.

He decides to remarry the king’s daughter. Medea is furious and she decides to plot revenge. We see here that Jason’s plan is to marry for himself to advance in society and that seemed like a good idea at first but then his plan backfired. In the interest of advancement he gets many people killed even of his own blood. This story is similar to the story of Actaeon. In the Actaeon story he decides to go on a little walk and sees Diana naked. After she is mad and turns him into a deer. His hunting dogs can’t tell it's him and they kill him. Here we see that Acteon thought it was a good idea to take a rest and to take the walk and to see Diana but his plan backfired and he was killed. In both stories both men thought that their intentions were good but in the end their plans don't work

Achilles is a very well known name in Greek Mythology. Achilles is known to be a hero for his part in the Trojan war. Achilles was one of the best warriors to ever live, one of the reasons being he was almost immortal. His mother Thetis, a nereid, did everything she could to make Achilles immortal. When she dipped him in the water, she had put her hand over his heel and therefore it never got wet. This made every part of his body immortal except for his heel. According to the History.com article, “Achilles,” Achilles was a great hero, that had superhuman strength and courage.
