He also used argumentation, which is a discourse in which the writer presents and logically supports a particular view or opinion. Paine used motivation in which people’s values, wants, desires, dreams, wishes, and needs is stated. Paine was the “firebrand of the American Revolution.” His writings brought courage in times of crisis. At the time Paine wrote “Common Sense” the colonies were still split on the question of declaring their independence from Great Britain. Some instructed their delegates in the Continental Congress to act against separation from the mother country. Thousands of colonists were undecided. To rally the faltering Paine wrote: “Freedom has been hunted around the globe. Asia and Africa have expelled her…and England has given her warning to depart. O, receive the fugitive and prepare in time an asylum for mankind!” Colonists up and down the coast read Paine’s pamphlet, which stir call to action. George Washington said it turned doubt into decision for independence.
Today’s Government of the United States is similar to that of England in the 1770’s. They are similar in respects to our taxes and basic way of living. They both control our rate of taxes without our say in the matter. Because of Thomas Paine’s call for action to
Thomas Paine was an English American writer and pamphleteer whose “Common Sense” and other writings helped influenced the American Revolution, and the Declaration of Independence. At this time only upper-class men received an education while Paine received a short basic education for six years. He studied, English, Latin, Greek and math before he started to work with his father in the family business.
He thought that people should know about the way Britain is treating the colonies and that people must fight against the unfair ways of British Parliament. Thomas Paine saw that colonies had every right to revolt against the government. He knew the taxes being imposed on colonies were wrong and that the fact colonies did not get the right of representation in the Parliament was unfair. There was no need for the colonies to stay dependent on England. So on January 10, 1776 Paine formulated his ideas on american independence in his pamphlet known as “Common Sense”

In one idea of his argument, Paine related the King of England to the pope when he says, “For monarchy in every instance is the popery of government”(Paine, 12). This got an unhelpful reaction from loyalists, who still thought that a compromise with Great Britain was the solution. They thought Paine’s views on independence were too drastic and in 1776, a pamphlet was published called The True Interest of America Impartially Stated In Certain Strictures On a Pamphlet Entitled Common Sense, by an American. In this pamphlet, the author calls Common Sense, “one of the most artful, insidious and pernicious pamphlets”, he had ever read. He talks about how Paine is speaking to the colonists during a time when they are very fanatical and helpless. He states that the colonist’s minds are “easily imposed on” and that Common Sense will cause much vehemence. In Plain Truth, James Chalmers condemns Common Sense, calling Paine’s views “quackery”. He goes on to say, “the scheme of independence is ruinous, delusive and impracticable.” He says “Permanent liberty and true happiness can only be obtained by reconciliation with that kingdom. Reconciliation with Great Britain is safe, honorable and

How important was it for America to gain its independence from England? Thomas Paine, an English radicalist, thought that it was extremely important. Important enough to write a pamphlet on why American Colonist should have independence. Thomas Paine was responsible for some of the most influential works of the revolution. Paine’s pamphlet Common Sense was a very crucial part to America and its movement of independence from Britain. Paine was effective with his writings by being very plain. He wanted both farmers and officials to understand what he was talking about and be able to comprehend his ideas. Paine wanted to put his ideas out to the people of the American colonies so that they could understand it just by reading and not have to analyze and decipher what he was really trying to get across. As the year 1776 began in the American colonies, tension with King George III’s England was at perhaps an all-time high. Americans were frustrated with the actions of their rulers overseas.
