In the 16th century the Spanish had acquired wealth on account of South America. Since England had recently switched over to the Protestant church, Spain wanted to get enough money and a big enough army to defeat England and change it back to the Catholic church (Horn). Once England realized their plan they tried various ways to get the wealth they needed to dominate Spain. However, none of these ways resulted in the wealth they needed until they had realized they could colonize the New World. Sending the poor to the New World to colonize would solve England’s problems of overpopulation and a need for wealth (Horn). After multiple failed attempts to colonize the New World they finally reached success with the establishment of Jamestown, Virginia …show more content…
Virginia was made mainly because of King James, he had given a charter to the Virginia Company in 1606 and from it Jamestown was constructed (Calvo). Economic motives are what had prompted the colonization of Virginia. The key point of this colony was to expand English trade and obtain more of a variety of the goods produced. Which would all result in a financial profit that England needed (“Revolutionary City”). Freedom from religious persecution is what motivated the Pilgrims to leave England, resulting in Massachusetts Bay colony. The Puritans wanted a place where they could practice their religion freely. Connected to this is the Great Migration, which was between 1630 and 1640 where forty to sixty thousand people emigrated to the colonies in America. The immigrants of this migration were Puritans who were not being accepted in England, these immigrants preferred to settle in Mass. among other Puritans (Sonia). This growth soon caused tensions between Massachusetts Bay and England. Many later immigrants were motivated by economic opportunities in the New World and many of them settled in the colonies of Virginia, where they were always in need of laborers (Calvo). The reasoning behind each colony’s settlement is vastly
During the 17th and 18th century, English residents felt that England was over-crowded and intolerable. They wanted to lessen these problems that rose up because of the large population increase and to establish more religious freedom (Horn). The English believed that the best way to go about this was to colonize the New World. Subsequently, many colonies began to develop, and of these colonies, Massachusetts Bay and Virginia were the most well-known. The early settlements of Massachusetts and Virginia were both established by similar groups of people at the same time; furthermore, their contrasting beginnings as a colony, views on religion, and method of economic stability all contributed to our American heritage today.
The New England and Chesapeake colonists settled in the new world for different reasons like religious freedoms in the North and quick profits in the South.
would anyone want to go to a place where dreams can come true and where the American dream was first created? Everyone was created equal and has the same opportunity to reach for what they believe in. I believe that the Plymouth colony was a better example for the American dream than the Jamestown colony. first they all worked together for the greater good of the colony. Second they had a great leader. Lastly they had help from the native American’s to learn how to farm and hunt.
Chesapeake is similar to Jamestown, in a few ways- both had many changes in political systems, grew tobacco as a cash crop, used slaves, and were Christian. They were also different, of course, as the political systems they each went through were not the same, Jamestown traded with the natives throughout its lifetime (while the Chesapeake only did initially), they had different denominations of Christianity, and different physical settlements. With many similarities these two colonies were alike overall. However, their smaller differences set them apart in a variety of ways.
The British colonies in the new world included the Chesapeake colonies and the New England colonies which has some similarities, but more differences. These included their motives for founding the new land, their political views, and their religious differences which created drastically different societies.
Today, the United States of America is a very racially and religiously diverse society. We saw the seeds of diversity being sown in the early days of colonization when the Chesapeake and New England colonies grew into distinctive societies. Even though both regions were primarily English, they had similarities as well as striking differences. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to geography, religion, and motives for colonial expansion.
Jamestown and the Massachusetts Bay Colony had many similarities and differences. Many of these differences were due to their physical location and climatic conditions. The success of both colonies can be contributed to strong leadership and the characteristics of the personalities of the settlers that inhabited each settlement. Many of the early problems in both settlements can be contributed to a lack of knowledge on the parts of the settlers along with attacks from neighboring Native American tribes.
Although some historians consider the Native Americans responsible for Bacon’s actions, could it be that Bacon was only after the native’s land and property and would do anything to obtain the land for his own financial benefit? In this essay, I will discuss Jamestown, Virginia in the 1600’s, and the conflicts between the settlers, Native Americans and the royalty from England that were sent to govern this area. This essay will also discuss why Bacon should not be considered a hero by taking into account the conflicts between the Governor Sir Berkeley and his corrupt government, the rebel Nathaniel Bacon, the settlers or tobacco farmers, and the Native Americans
James town was the first settlement in North America and was developed mainly to supply to the mother country with new goods. Being the first settlement James Town had challenges they had to overcome versus Massachusetts which was a town started by a religious group known as Puritans who had no obligation to England other than coming to North America to practice their religion freely.
The day I believed was the beginning of a new opportunity in becoming the man I’ve always wanted to become was really the begging of failure, starvation, and depression. I decided to leave England because of my economic problems I was facing due to the population boost, their was a lot more people and fewer jobs to go around. Even though I was still working to make a profit for the Virginia Company of London I had hope of raising a family here. Our Caption Christopher Newport had us explore the coast of Virginia before landing in Jamestown. On May 13, after two weeks of exploration, the ships arrived at a site on the James River selected for its deep water anchorage and good defensive position. The passengers came ashore the next day, and work
In spite of the many Indian massacres, Jamestown still grew to be a successful colony. The London Company was the main founder of Jamestown. The London Company's founders believed that there were precious metals in America so they sent a group of settlers to Jamestown. The trip to the Americas was not a very easy one for these settlers. They had to overcome many obstacles just to get to the Americas. In 1619 the House of Burgesses was formed which marked the first legislative body in America. Jamestown was plagued by many disasters. They were faced with one continuous disaster, Indian wars. They fought over land with Indians for many years. The London Company, creation of the colony, and
Motivation for coming to the New World greatly influenced Spanish and British colonization. The Spanish are said to have had three distinct reasons; God, glory and gold. God meaning the conversion of natives, glory meaning the claiming of new land for the Spanish empire and gold meaning the desire to find gold to bring wealth back to Spain. The British colony of Jamestown shared the desire to find gold. Unlike the Spaniards, the British didn’t plan on permanently settling in America. However, these plans changed and Jamestown became a settlement.
Jamestown presented more prospects to colonists than Massachusetts Bay Colony by allowing more than one religion, workers rights, and freedom of speech. Jamestown settlers had a bond from England guarantees the rights of settlers, as they would have had it in England. The Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay Colony and they established a charter also. Both colonies had their have and have not in them. Massachusetts Bay Colony encourage the church greatly and Jamestown boost working over religion. The starting of a democracy, equality was from Jamestown.
Spain was not England’s only motive for colonization: England had duel economic problems of mass unemployment and lack of markets to sell their manufactured goods. Along with raw materials, colonization of North America would provide jobs for the idle youth of England as well as plenty of new markets. Hakluyt believed that the beggars, veterans, debtors, youth, and sailors would find work and grow to be in a “more happy state”. John Winthrope put it perfectly when he said that England “groews weary of her Inhabitants”; the “ burthen of [the] poore” was becoming too much for England. The poor of England were turing to crime, begging, and debt to try and survive during the 16th and 17th centuries. England was indeed being weighed down,
Colonization was first managed by Spain and Portugal, leading England to hold a very strong interest in exploring the new land. England’s reasons for leaving to North America where economics, religion and politics. The idea of coming to a new land where there are no rules or existent order gave the English hope for developing better faith and religious freedom, and those who were oppressed, were searching for a way to gain those homes and land they had lost as well as economic opportunity, and to create a foundation for expansion of trade. In order to start settling, there needed to be a source in which the settlements where funded. Join Stock companies where originally how colonies where maintained and one of the reasons as to why Jamestown, the first “successful” settlement, was able to prosper. Join stock companies gave many investors authorization to fund their money in means to support of a colony. Of course, the reason investors decided to do this was if the colony was able to produce or obtain a financial gain, they were entitled to receive a great amount of that profit.
