Briefly discuss this. “Go Tell it On the Mountain” is Baldwin’s first novel Published in 1952. It is Baldwin's largely autobiographical novel and tells the story of a black boy growing up in Harlem in early 20th century under poverty, racism, and especially for him, the tyranny of his step-father. He described the painful and bitter relationship with his stepfather, David, who attempted to suppress his sense of identity through abusive behaviour and hurt him most. Every time he changed his name, he transited his identity, which means he converted from one social status to a higher quo. Malcolm was in prison for seven years during which he self-educated in many subjects and is a period of intellectual growth and religious upheaval. When he was in prison, his family including his brother Reginald introduced him Nation of Islam. Then He started to write to Elijah Muhammad, who is the founder of Nation of Islam. In 1952, Malcolm was released from prison, and went to Chicago, Illinois, to meet and talk with Elijah Muhammad. He joined the Nation of Islam and changed his surname from Little to X. The name Little came from the white man who was the owner of Malcolm's grandparents during the period of black slavery. Eventually, Malcolm discarded the name "Little" which symbolized his freedom from slavery. He had taken an X which means unknown to symbolize the African identity had been stolen. It shows how strongly Malcolm was committed to the Nation of Islam, and he respected Elijah Muhammad by giving up the name given by his
