James Baldwin makes the claim that, “The purpose of education, finally, is to create in a person the ability to look at the world for himself, to make his own decisions.” in his speech titled ‘A Talk to Teachers.’ I agree with what Baldwin claims, and whether we believe it or not, without an education with the aim of teaching “-a person the ability to look at the world for himself, (and) to make his own decisions.” we wouldn’t be able to live within our true identity in this society. In which, the aim of education is to provide essential knowledge for personal development and to help us define our purpose in life. This is why the school house is one of the most crucial places our character development settles. We don’t only learn Math and English, but we also learn social skills, identity, and important life lessons - all of which are the basis of the character we have growing up. Consequently, if teachers are not making the conscious effort to teach students how to think for themselves, their identity is then mixed in with the social framework designed to perpetuate the aims of society, which is to blindly follow the leader. Well, as Baldwin states, “What societies really, ideally, want is a citizenry which will simply obey the rules of society. (but) What passes for identity in America is a series of myths about one’s (White Americans) heroic ancestors.” How can we be “obedient” to our society when it is made up of lies? How can we be “obedient” to a society who has created such an identity crisis that no one truly knows who they are? How can we be “obedient” to a society that does everything in its power to keep our true identity a secret? It makes you think, just maybe if we were allowed to think for ourselves and learn about our true American history, without resistance from society, there wouldn’t be so much chaos and confusion in the world today.
