The substance of a film often lies in its plot; however, the joy in watching a film is experiencing how the characters of the story follow that plot. More specifically, when the plot has twists and turns, ups and downs, and a character in pursuit, that plot becomes much more entertaining to follow. In the genre of thriller movies, the plot is essential and comparative to the quality of the film. In horror films, the quality of the film is based on how much it scared you, how many times did you jump in your seat or scream in the theater? In comedy films, the films are valued on how much they made you laugh out loud and how much fun you had watching them.

The lighting of a scene is what sets the mood and most often in the case of thrillers, the mood is a somber one. Paul Schrader is a director that did an excellent job in terms of lighting in the scenes that reflected the mood and the content of the film. In the beginning of the film the lighting is mostly natural, but as the film progressed and Jake Van Dorn goes deeper into the sexual underworld, the lighting becomes much more dim. There are many scenes with red light that can be interpreted as reflective at Jake Van Dorn’s anger toward the sexual underworld for stealing and corrupting his daughter. Similar to Hardcore, The Dark Knight also has deliberate lighting changes when Bruce Wayne is actually himself and when he is the batman. Not every pursuit is between a rogue cop and the killer that got away as in the Pledge, but Jerry Black was in pursuit of much more than just the killer he could never find; he was in pursuit of himself. Obviously, Jerry Black was not the killer; on the contrast, he is a newly retired cop the struggles to find purpose in his life when he was released from the police force. In the genre of thrillers the reason we the viewers enjoy the film is because of the chase, not what happens after. In The Dark Knight, there is a fight scene between the batman and the joker where the joker falls off the ledge of a tall building certainly to his death. Surprising everyone, the batman save the joker from certain death by catching him because he had vowed to protect, not to kill. In The Searchers, Ethan Edwards finds his niece after years of searching, but is still physically and emotionally isolated at the end of the film. In Hardcore, Jake Van Dorn finds his daughter after searching through California’s sexual underworld, but she is not the same person as when she left. In The Pledge, Jerry Black never finds the killer he has been looking for, but found himself a new family and a new purpose in caring for that family.
