There has always been a desperate struggle for power along the years that humans have inhabited earth. In William Golding’s “Lord Of The Flies”, William shows how it can affect anyone, anywhere. Ralph shows his democratic spirit and gets elected by other as the tribe’s chief. Jack on the other hand is the more dictatorial style of a leader. Both boys are similar but yet different, they both feel the burden of the power differently. Therefore these reasons will prove that Ralph is a better candidate for being a leader and who will ultimately achieve power.
As a base of human desire and need, power has always been one of the number one desire of mankind since the dawn of time. To place yourself above others, or gain control over your followers or a situation brings safety and comfort to a leader. A well written example of this concept lies within the twisted world created by William Golding in his, “Lord of the Flies”. Throughout the story, Jack seeks power above all else, and stops for nothing in this lustful quest of dominance. We can get a glimpse of Jack’s desires through his iron grip within his choirboys, how he clashes with Ralph, and how Jack’s actions bring about a deeper symbolism underlying within the story.

Zawadi Bunzigiye Ms. Blier EAE3U Why one can’t lead all In this modern day and age, many may take for granted the fact that it is more common than not to communally elect a leader into power. There is an air of dignity around such affairs. Thus was the climate on the microcosmic island of William Golding’s The Lord of the Flies. It was one of civility and shared trust in the beginning, when the group of boys chose Ralph as their chief.
The boys chose Ralph as their leader over Jack initially because of the power and strength he shows by holding the conch and using it to bring them all together. The defeat shocks Jack, but pushes him to discover ways to make the children bend to his will. William Golding’s brilliant usage of characterization in Lord of the Flies specifically focuses on Ralph’s start as a systematic yet ineffective leader and Jack’s manipulative leadership which causes their transformation from civilized and innocent boys into savage and malicious degenerates. Before the kids decided on a leader, Ralph proves himself a clear choice by using a conch to call the kids together.
In the novel of Lord Of The Flies shows a progression in which the government shows order at one point and chaos at another. The boy voted Ralph as leader of the group at the beginning of the novel, but then the character Jack, who opposed Ralph because things didn't go his way. This causes a distance between the group members, lead to chaos.
In the novel “Lord of the Flies” there are two kinds of leaders that are being loved or feared which is Ralph and Jack. From a leader’s perspective, the two boys are both infectious and full of authority. However, I cherish the belief that as a leader it is better to be loved than to be feared, and this lead to a further and deeper discussion.
William Golding's Lord of the Flies is a novel about a group of boys who are lost on a deserted island and must do what they can to survive. At the beginning of the novel, two of the boys, Ralph and Jack, become leaders. These differences will form the main conflict in the story. The differences will cause them to hate each other and the anger that results is a recurring part of the plot throughout the novel. These two boys can be compared by the way they change, the reason for their actions, and the way they use or abuse power.

William Golding’s Lord of the Flies presents a story of a group of boys who become stranded on an island together, and in their struggle to survive; some begin to fight for power. Having power makes them feel in control of their situation; however, this power struggle quickly begins to consume them. Golding uses the power struggle between Ralph and Jack, the two main characters, to illustrate the power struggle between good and evil.
As days go by the struggle to get civilization to withstand crumbles, twelve-year-old Ralph one of the main characters in William Golding’s classic tale Lord of the Flies takes up an unforeseen responsibility. When the group of boys lead by Ralph and his rival Jack are wrecked on an island they experiment to establish a functioning society. At the beginning, the endeavour to organize their own dominion is a simple task. Later on, the boys views and ideas reveal that trying to create a successful government is challenging because the boys lack the components necessary for a strong governing body. Though the boys have a charismatic leader Ralph, their childish and barbaric actions lead to the destruction of civilization.
While William Golding’s 1954 novel, Lord of the Flies, chronicles the group dynamics of young British boys from a state of civilized decency to one of uncontrolled depravity after they are stranded on a desolate tropical island for a time, it also disturbingly reveals a base brutality and primal savagery that surfaces when survival is at stake. The protagonist of the novel, Ralph, is one of the oldest boys on the island. He claims a position of leadership due to his pragmatic survival skillset. Golding describes Ralph as quite tall for his age, handsome, and able-bodied, and he tells us explicitly that he presides over the other boys with naturally with a sense of authority. Although Ralph lacks Piggy's intelligence, Ralph is a calm, sound, communicative, and sensible thinker with a strong moral code. However, Ralph is put under the same instinctive influences that affect the other boys, as demonstrated by his participation in Simon's killing. However, Ralph does not hold his position for long, and is soon usurped by Jack, the head of the adventurous, aggressive, and dauntless hunter tribe. With Ralphs’ dedication to justice and equality, he represents the societal stability that is hand-and-hand with democracy. His unwavering push for rescuing and return to the normalcy of society forms him into the most relatable, realistic, civilized, and independent character throughout.
William Golding, the author of The Lord of the Flies, says,“The moral is that the shape of a society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system, however apparently logical or respectable.” In the story, there are three significant individuals who have contrasting ideas about how they want to live in their new environment. Ralph, a sensible, civilized boy, was the first selection for a chief. He had practical ideas on how everyone should act so they could live peacefully and easily together without conflict. Jack, who is headstrong and hasty, focused mainly on what needed to be succeeded in the moment, he acted on impulse rather than reason.
In the famous novel named “Lord of the flies”, there are four main characters that William Golding built up to represent the typical personalities in human nature. While Jack stands for the powerfully instinct savagery, Simon represents the natural kindness and Piggy with his glasses is the symbol of wisdom, Ralph has the best conducts of a real leader as he was initially voted for chief. There are three main characteristics that mark him out as a felicitous leader: rational, moral and unflinching.
Joseph Stalin, Abraham Lincoln, Adolf Hitler, and Martin Luther King Jr. are all remarkable examples of some of the most effective leaders our world has ever seen. Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. are well-known for being noble, astounding men who unified people by using a moralistic approach. On the contrary, Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler are both notorious for using cruel, depraved conduct while developing their fame and power. This situation is very comparable to main characters, Jack and Ralph, in the novel Lord of the Flies. Equally, the boys possess qualities of a leader, yet one technique used to become “chief” is ethical and the other is malicious. The enduring question is which of the two boys is the best leader? In my mind the answer is black and white. Although Jack wins the majority of the boys over by using their fear to his advantage, Ralph remains moral and rational and that is the most important characteristic of a great leader.
In a group, there are always people who prove to have better leadership skills then others. The strongest of these people can often influence the weaker people into following them. However, the strongest person is not necessarily the best leader as it is proven in William Golding's book, The Lord of the Flies. Although Ralph is the weaker person, he is still able to show a better understanding of people than Jack who is stronger. Ralph demonstrates his excellent leadership skills throughout the book by keeping the group in line, treating everyone with respect, and staying focused on getting rescued.
