Last week I presented my supervisor a visual of the new Ivy Tech diversity page. He gave me his feedback to help me improve the page. He also gave me some suggestions for the page such as redefine diversity because he thinks the definition we currently have is to too long. My focus on this project is to get students input. I have a whole section on the website where we ask students what their definition of diversity is regarding religion, age, and gender. I think this is important for our department so that we can focus on their beliefs. This week I will be meeting with the website technicians so that we can update my new version onto the Ivy Tech website.
Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville is a school that supports diversity. I would recommend partnering with them.
In most of my classes the discussion of diversity and what it means to us as a future teacher is always a hot topic. So I’ve learned that diversity is so much more than just race and gender, it is every little thing that makes us, us, whether as an individual or as a group. So after completing Diversity Scale Survey (Miville-Guzman University Scale) and reading the following questions I have come to turns that I may not be so accepting of individual
In The New York Times, the article “The Lie About College Diversity.” by Frank Bruni discusses his theory on college diversity. Bruni explains that colleges are trying to enhance their campus. The college fails to get these diverse groups to go outside their comfort zone and intermingle. There are places where these groups can go to feel comfortable like housing environments, groups, fraternities, and clubs. However, they fail to go outside these groups. The colleges should help make it possible for these different diverse groups to interact, socialize, and drive cohesion. This will help college students integrate better into real-world diverse environments.
Diversity is a term known for, "variety." To be diverse is to have a range of different types of people all in one place. Different types of people can range from their race, background, social class, age, or religion. Those are just a few examples that can separate a person from others. To be aware of diversity around you is something everyone should take note of. Many people may not realize that they live in such a diverse world that they do not know how to cope with someone when they do find someone with a different background than they do. Washburn University has a very diverse population and Washburn and most of the students and faculty are aware of this and take great pride in it. Washburn University is not the biggest college and it
This article is a qualitative article exploring the different literary perspectives taken on LGBT students attending HBCUs and some of the challenges that are faced by LGBT students attending HBCUs. The authors has also offered recommendations to help HBCUs bridge the gap between LGBT students and the campus environment. The purpose of the article is clearly stated from the beginning to the end. The authors begins by discussing the history of HBCUs, the reasoning behind having them and also the close relationship that HBCUs have with religious organizations, something that can cause a big issue with LGBT students. According to the Mobley & Johnson (2015) “Black church leaders are often cited for condemning LGBT populations within the Black
For two days, I observed the first ten individuals entering the Jones-Sampson building located on the JSU campus. Observing these individuals allowed me the opportunity to explore how diversity is perceived from a small sample of the campus. I believe, a college campus is the perfect setting to view the hop topic called diversity. The population at JSU includes people from various countries, social economic backgrounds, class, gender, occupations, and sexual-orientation. According to the Webster dictionary, diversity entails the quality or state of having different forms, types, and ideas about something. For the purpose of this observation, the first ten individuals encountered were evaluated based on both their similarities and differences. The factors observed
Washburn University has always been proud of having diversity since it first opened its doors to the public 151 years ago. If you are to look around campus many are able to see how much diversity is valued by the campus as a whole, they know everyone is different and each person has their own story to tell. If a university made it where no one is allowed to talk about where they came before and how they ended up where they are in life. what is the point of being proud of who you are? For me, it is important for each person to be proud of the person who they are because they could have had to overcome so much in life to make it to this point of being an undergraduate.
Nowadays, in the process of development of science technology and globalization, more and more organizations have realized that the understanding of organizational diversity and get used to the diversification of the market has become the important factors to get the market. On one hand, for the enterprise, the diversification of the workplace can help the administrators make better decisions, improve the effectiveness and innovation to solve the problem. On the other hand, for the outside of the enterprise, the improvement of the diversity of the organization is contributing to meet the needs of the different customer and different market.
I learned some important things from this course that I will allow to stick with me no matter my profession. Diversity is something I will always have to deal with regardless if it is race, gender, or gender orientation. Importantly this course has allowed me to grow as an individual and has shown me that it is okay to learn about other races and their background. Not only has it allowed me to be acceptable of everyone in fact, it has allowed me to be less judgmental amongst others.
UT’s goal of diversity is flawed and unobtainable. UT never provides a definition of critical mass which is needed when diversity is such an important goal. Obtaining and measuring diversity is not a case of “I’ll know it when I see”, some concrete goal must be in mind. UT’s goal of diversity includes a select number of minorities in every classroom, and this goal is plainly unobtainable. There only two ways to ensure that classrooms have the desired number of minority students. The first is to put in place rigid course requirements and schedule, but doing so would remove the liberty of the college experience. The second goal would be to establish a quota to ensure that minorities would be present in all classrooms. The usage of a quota to
I think what I enjoyed the most about this course was the fact that I got to learn about all of the different factors that impact or are relevant in order to really understand diversity. I also founded interesting how much understanding this concept really affects your life and those that surround you. I really also enjoyed how we were able to comment on each other’s post, and give our own opinion or feedback on the discussion of the week. I think that this was a great idea because we saw who had similar points of views, who agreed or disagree and some even gave us some words of encouragement. It was just good to communicate with others on the topics of discussion for the week, and after all it was necessary since the main focus of this course
The world is filled different cultures, races and ethnicities, and it is crucial that our higher education institutions reflect this diversity. Representation matters. We are a country filled with diverse cultures all of which whom need to be represented. The purpose of this literature review is to explain why and how diversity in a higher education setting is important. Students learn better in such an environment and are better prepared to become active participants in our pluralistic, democratic society once they leave school Diversity is not only important among the student population but also within college curriculum. It is an important issue regardless of the setting. However, when it is applied it to a place where people come to learn,
At UC-Berkeley, the course description for "Politics and Poetics" (Fall Course 2002) stated that "conservative thinkers are encouraged to seek other sections." (SAF 1). Though the instructor later apologized for the description, this is the sort of encouragement conservative-minded students are greeted with many times during their college experience. It is said that in class, students are taught that their country -- and Western culture in general -- is tainted by racism, sexism, and oppression (Stearn 2).
Within the core of many educational institutions, diversity is a commercial tacit. While every institution cannot offer the same kind of diversity, the endorsement of such exists through various definitions. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges define diversity through the various classes: race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, disability, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, and age (“Statement on Diversity”)
