In Anaheim Schools, school days aren’t long enough for students to learn the material they’re supposed to know, therefore many fail their classes. Anaheim High Schools also don’t have many programs like homework club that help students succeed in their classes so they can graduate, unlike KIPP Schools that make students that need extra help stay after school. In order to increase student success at Anaheim schools, the school days should be longer and have more days. Students should also be able to get help in programs especially in math which is what most students struggle with. In the essay “Marita’s Bargain”, Malcolm Gladwell states “that’s the value of going to school 243 days a year. You have time to learn everything that needs to be learned
Malcolm Gladwell, the author of Outliers, a novel depicting success, provides different examples of how an individual can achieve success in every chapter of his book to show his audience that success, despite a variety of barriers, is in fact in our control. A very important chapter titled, “Marita's Bargain”, explains the flaws in today’s public school systems. He shows the problems with the solutions to fix them while showing the alternatives to the regular system such as the KIPP Program in New York. The KIPP Program (Knowledge is Power Program) is a new kind of middle school that selects students from less fortunate locations and uses unique teaching strategies to turn them around into fantastic learners. In the chapter, Gladwell is extremely descriptive by using visual words to paint the picture of the South Bronx in New York City. He describes the buildings that were built in the 1960’s as squat and bleak looking. Gladwell had an interest in this subject as it involves success, however he had no prior experiences to produce the piece. Gladwell establishes personal credibility through the use of knowledge, reason, and facts and figures. He comes across very knowledgeable on the subject presenting great data with excellent vocabulary. He is able to do this with no obvious bias as well. Gladwell shows authority because he is well known for writing novels that involve success. His intention is to teach and explain how schools need to change the length of vacation breaks
Unfortunately, Anaheim High School really isn't anything like KIPP. A Lot of these kids at Anaheim come from bad neighborhoods, poor families, and poverty just like KIPP students, but KIPP has their students start school at seven and end school at five, that pretty much says what kind of school KIPP is compared to school’s like Anaheim that starts at eight, and ends at two thirty. KIPP shows their students that their school is a privilege to attend, and students at Anaheim take their free education for granted instead of grasping it and doing something with it that is bigger than themselves. Most of the students at KIPP are guaranteed to go to college and half of the kids that attend Anaheim don't even graduate on time or at all. In order to
All of this contributes to the overpopulation and increasingly slower pace it takes to get to classes. Solutions are needed to improve the quality of the school and the people in it. One solution would be to build new buildings to make more classes and grow the size of the school with the population increase. Doing this would cost the school system money it doesn’t have,
Its 3:15 PM It’s Monday Where are your kids? Are they outside playing, in their rooms still sleeping, playing games or is he or she just getting off school. Across the nation schools are debating about whether schools should have a four day school week. Some schools have tried a three day weekend and it turned out well for students and teachers. Students have more time to do homework and projects, and afterwords students would be able to go outside to play. Other schools tried it, and it didn’t help some students that much because they would take advantage of the fact they had a three day week and put off homework. Evidence shows students should attend school four day a week to improve productivity.
We all strive for higher scores in school. A four-day week may provide just that. Students have more time on school days, giving them the opportunity to learn more each and every hour they spend in their classrooms. Even teachers have more time to learn from their peers about their lessons and ways of teaching, so they can improve it to fit their students. A four-day school week may provide higher quality resources, as there are only four days to use them. It saves the school financially in times of low budgets, and that unscheduled day saves at least 1.5% more than schools who stick to the regular five-day week. The mediocre quality of supplies gradually decreases as more weeks spent as a four-day week slowly increase. Students with four-day school weeks had proven themselves they deserved that schedule with their academic scores, which have increased throughout the year. They have better attendance, because they have more time for extracurricular activities and appointments outside of school. A four-day school week may be just what we need.
What changes take place that can actually make a one of a big difference to improve the success of students. A change that can help many students in many ways that later on the future there is going to be a big change and improvement on their lives. The change that has to happen now to be able to have a better life and a easy path in life is to have a better support of motivation so the students can acutely want to learn and be in school. In the story of Marita’s Bargain explains how “Everyone says that KPP is hard, but once you get the hang of it, it’s not really that hard.” In the story Marita’s is a young girl who got the chance to be in a program name KPP where school was really challenging for her not only because she is a young girl but becuase she and her family do not have the benefits of being wealthy, so just with a chance even though she has to wake up really early and be up all day in school after all you will eventually be use to it and it's going to be really easy at the end of the day. After all “In return, KIPP promises that it will take kids like her who are stuck in poverty and give them a chance to get out.” KPP is a one great program who prepare young kids for that later in the future they will have something good out of it. And with the motivations that they get makes them want to do their homeworks and not make them not go to school. These changes in Anaheim High School will sure make a one of a big difference and the results are going to be really big with the students and a whole big amount of students are really going to want to go to school and do good with the motivation and later on in the future a bigger chance of change is going to be seen.
After reviewing my data, I found that there was a modest increase in student achievement. There was a 6% increase in student scores from the pretest to the first quiz of the section. Although it is technology incomplete data because we have not finished the chapter, I feel that this is a good start. I believe this came from two areas. The first is that students were doing more hands on work which, in economics, is important for students to have a good understanding of the material and theories. The second reason is that I put in more time to better understand and teach these economic theories. Obviously, if I am better able to communicate the material to my students, they will have an easier time understanding it. Comparing last years SLO
A success of a student relies on the time spent in school. Anaheim high school students need to have longer hours in school to study for and get all the help they need and to make that happen there needs to be less summer vacation my argument is that KIPP students are smart and well educated because they have long hours of school and study for approximately 2 hours and read and listen to music for about the same time. “Relation of Education Insanity”(8). The scores show how students who had longer summer schools had a had low test scores and for those students who had less summer vacations and they had better test scores which Is pretty impressive. Studying a lot and putting a lot of time in something would make it easier for your brain to function faster because you're constantly thinking. “The beginning is hard”(9). The beginning is hard, but when you try and you challenge yourself you start to believe in yourself and become a successful person.
Schools in Anaheim need to discover the best way to urge their students to apply more time into their core subjects and focus. This is a necessary transformation and it needs to be enforced amongst students because it will academically improve their academic success. With longer school days, teachers have the capability to convert the way they convey their lesson plans in a way that they lead their students to higher achievement. In order to increase student achievement at schools in Anaheim, students need to become more dedicated to their school work to be successful by adding longer time to core academics and enrichment activities into their schedules. According to “Marita’s Bargain by Malcolm Gladwell,” they start school at seven twenty-five,"
Another part of the problem with high schools is the amount of homework is given to students. Let’s say that a student has five classes a day and receives five hours of homework each night. That leaves the student little to no time to spend time with family and friends, go to work, play a sport, and even
Students aren’t alway prepared to come back to school after a long vacation. In Anaheim schools after students come back from a three months vacation, it takes them a while to get back on a school schedule. Many of the students still have a vacation mindset, which means they’re less likely to do well in first couple weeks of school. Grades tend to be low at the start of a new school year and after winter vacation. After a long vacation it takes student time to get back on track to become successful in school. In order to increase student success at Anaheim schools is to have a mandatory after school study class. In Marita’s Bargain by Malcolm Gladwell, it states “What that extra time does is allow for a more relaxed atmosphere”(10). Having extra time in school for a study class would improve students tests scores and
Have you ever pictured a school with less time in school? How would it feel like? Children in Hershey should have less time in school. Limited classroom requirements has led to the highest schools, a better balanced life.
In the beginning of sophomore year, there was a class meeting during 3rd period. About how Class Of 2018 was the worst out of all classes. Dr. Corral said, “Class of 2018 has no future, you guys aren’t gonna get nowhere in life”. Due to it having the highest rate of failing classes. In order to increase student success at Anaheim Schools, we should spend more time in school. In Gladwell’s paper the KIPP Academy in New York. Certainly think the key to success is the SSLANT protocol to install the college mentality early on, going to passing periods quite in a single file line (maintain focus, in school to learn not to socialize) “These are kids here from 7:45 a.m. until 7 p.m. If you take an average day, and you take out lunch and recess,
Multiple students and teachers go to school every day and work very hard to meet the task that is asked of each of them each day. Teachers work more than 40 hours a week, especially when events go on throughout the school year. Students go to class to earn the grade of an “A,” not to learn what the teacher is teaching the class due to the fact that students were taught to consistently earn a letter grade in the class. However, teachers are not at fault either, because the school board and administrators give teachers a timeline for the curriculum. The students must learn a certain amount in a specific amount of time in each marking period. In “Against School” by John Taylor Gatto, he describes how many students and teachers go to school the atmosphere is dull, due to the fact that the education system has been so fixed in the American public school. Gatto questions whether schooling is even a necessity for the children of America. The failure in the American education system has flaws, that are reflected by immaturity and boredom in students caused by their treatment under the system, timeline for curriculum, and the amount of time spent in the classroom.
If you come to Anaheim High School and ask your fellow classmates who came back from their long summer vacation if they remember anything from what they learned last year. Majority of them might say they don't and would want to refresh their minds by redoing the lessons. This would be a waste of school time because teachers would be using the time to re-teach what they already taught their student last year. In order to increase student success at Anaheim school’s the districts should double school days and hours. The district can also give the schools Saturday school for a better understanding the subject for at least four hours. With these types of changes, their knowledge would expand without any hesitation. In the article “Marita’s Bargain” Malcolm Gladwell argues that “students in Asian schools don’t have long summer vacations’’(8). This quote compares how other countries double school days to make their intelligence grow and become responsible, therefore we should be doing the same. When students don’t have the capability of wanting to educate themselves and still think that they can go far in life without a good education. If Anaheim wanted to double school days and hours they would double think about it because plenty of students would rather want to leave then pay attention in class. If we had longer school days and hours in the Anaheim’s students would maybe excel in their math and reading scores when coming back from a short vacation. My second piece of evidence
