Narrative design is useful to the advancement of educational research because the stories collected have the power to communicate key information otherwise not possible through other research designs. Through stories it is possible to learn about “personal account about classrooms, schools, educational issues and the setting in which they work” (Creswell, 2008, p. 511). Everyone has a story to tell about incidents, events and experiences whether long or short that are useful in understanding occurrences within a given context. With the information provided through storytelling, researchers are then able to engage in the restorying process to gain a better perspective of the individual’s story. This is a major concern to researchers, especially because they “rely heavily on self-reported information from participants” (Creswell, 2008, p. 522). Based on my personal experience, two common reasons why people provide false data is to provide a happy conclusion, which makes people comfortable, or to victimize because they seek attention. Fortunately, researchers may use several techniques to address the issue of collecting false data. The techniques used include “the collection of multiple field texts, the triangulation of data, and member checking” (Creswell, 2008). These techniques are useful to review and assess the data collected through stories as false or reliable. On the one hand, multiple field texts provide data from various sources, triangulation, and member checking assist in confirming the data provided as well as the findings as per the interpretation of the researcher (Creswell, 2008). Even though gathering stories poses a threat to the study, these techniques are useful to the researcher as he or she ensures the validity of the research. The second issue in gathering stories traces back to the concern of whether or not the participants are “able to tell the real story” (Creswell, 2008). As humans we all share experiences through stories. We learn from ones experiences while they tell us the story of what happen to them. We learn about a 12 year old girl named Lisa Chavez. She tells us her story about the first time she has experienced racism. We also learn about a woman named Chimamanda Adiche's and she tells us about the dangers of a single story. While Chimamanda Adiche's tells us her story she explains to us why people have racist thoughts and it’s because of storytelling. Then we learn about Hampl’s piece about memoirs. He tells us what he thinks a memoir is and how true can a memoir be. Stories affect our everyday life, they affect how we see people and how we learn about things.
In the American society, storytelling continues to play a critical role. Each story, storytellers tells, serves a deep meaning towards their life and provides a medium, allowing the storytellers to keep the information they hold as a remembrance. Indeed, storytelling would bring meanings into one’s life as well. Storytelling offers a pathway that allows ones to stimulate continuous learning, development, connection and to look ahead to their future. Storytelling is an expression of power providing pathways to spiritual knowledge.
At this point in my life I find myself in an interesting predicament regarding my attitudes toward reading and writing; more so towards reading. Years ago I used to love reading books for pleasure but nowadays I find myself reading things that little to no effort to digest. This includes the very basic posts on facebook expressing one’s opinion on something or articles and threads on reddit discussing topics I find intriguing. I never thought the day would come where I’d have to admit to myself I had an addiction. The hardest part was to except the fact I was an addict of painkillers and admitting it to my family so that I could get the help and support needed to get clean. The road leading to my addiction started with the factors of my childhood, always trying to fit in and not being supported emotionally from my parents. Having a child at the age of sixteen was the second factor, which made me grow up faster than a normal child at my age would have had to. Storytelling helps other people to emotionally connect themselves to the author so that they know they are not the only ones who are experiencing a painful or exciting experience, and are able to share the same emotions. I was in high school the first time I had to write a narrative. I was a freshman. This was Ms. Bradley’s first time teaching at Union Christian Academy. On her first day, she gave us our syllabus and said, “I do not accept late work, especially on writing assignments.” We, literally, sat there stunned. My freshman class had it very easy during eighth grade year. We were not expecting this. As I looked through the syllabus, I saw that our first assignment was due in a week and it was a narrative. At this time, I did not even know what a narrative was. Ms. Bradley explained that a narrative was an account or story of events. It could be either true or false. Our narrative had to be true. It had to be a true account of something that happened to us over the summer. She wanted to gauge how are writing skills were. Our narrative had to be at least two to two and a half pages long.
