Hello, I am student in World Religion at UNM. I enjoy this class very much as I increase my knowledge in other religions and also mine which is Islam. In this genertation, it is very hard to practice my religion especially Islam with all stuff on the news. People think Islam is a religion of evil which is the complete opposite. While I was a child people would always ask why I would fast, and I would explain to them it was part of my religion and for me to call myself a Muslim I have to fast. There are many reasons why us Muslims fast. Fasting in religions, in Islam and Christianity fasting are similar but also a lot different. Also, with eating food it is a bit different. In Islam a Muslim is only supposed to eat Halal meat, also in Islam pork isn’t allowed. In this essay I will be explaining what halal food is. Also the difference on the foods we can eat Fasting, while in Islam fasting is part of the five pillars of Islam. To be a Muslim you have to follow these five pillars. The five pillars of Islam are Zakat(charity), Prayer, Hadj, Shadaha(beliving there is only one, and he is allah), and last one is fasting. In the Quran, theres a verse where it says when a muslim is old enough or healthy enough, he/she needs to fast. So, basically fasting is also an act of worship. Muslims fast during the month of Ramadan which was when the Quran was brought down to Muhammad(pbuh). During this month, while you’re in the stage of fasting, you have to avoid drinking, eating, and sexual
At first, the history of Islam is connected to Mohamed’s life. Mohamed was born in to a wealthy merchant Clan, which is now Saudi Arabia. On the other hand Muslims thought Islam began with God. Mohamed was raised by his uncle, because his parents and grandparents passed away. Mohamed lived the life of a Quryash Merchant then later married a girl by the name of Khadija. Mohamed started hearing voices and though he was going mad. But Khadija thought differently and told Mohamed that he was the chosen one. Mohamed searched for the true faith of Judaism and Christianity. Mohamed isolated himself in to the mountains near Mecca for retreat and mediation. Gabriel the Angel told Mohamed to recite the Koran. The Koran was only originally recited and not written down in one volume until after Mohamed’s death. This has brought controversy over the authentic composition. Mohamed’s wife was the first to convert.
Islam - A Highly Controversial Sensitive Issue in Today's World: Examination of Misconceptions and Beliefs
Judaism and Islam have a large history of fighting which has separated them significantly but they have also grown similarly side by side. On one hand there is the oldest religion and on the other one there is the youngest religion but both of them possess the same belief in monotheism, and to a large extent a similar code of law and scriptural authority. These religions share a similar creation story and patriarchy, since the roots of these two are to be found in the basin of Mesopotamia, dubbed the “Fertile Crescent” of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The story is used here as an opening to introduce a religious law effecting God and the surrounding area of the Arab nations, the Hebrews, the Muslims, and even a mention of Mesopotamian law. Chatim Potok phrases their story in his book Wanderings: Chaim Potok’s history of the Jews and he wrote “Abraham was probably born in the Sumerian City of Ur four thousand years ago a scholar invented a label for the descendants of Shem; he called them Semites,” (23).1
By definition, Islam is a religion of those who obey the doctrines of the Prophet Muhammad. Muhammad, who in the 7th century lived in Arabia, initiated a religious movement that throughout the Middle East was supported by the Arabs. Today, not only in Middle East origins, Islam has adherents, where it is the dominant religion in all countries (Non-Arab, and Arab), but also in other parts of Africa, Asia and, of course, as well as in the United States. Those who are loyal to Islam are called Muslims. The Sunni, Shiite conflict in Iraq started long before the ruling of Saddam Hussein, but when Hussein became Prime Minister of the country the conflict between the two religious sects was taken to a new level. Right when Hussein gained full power, under his control, began years of persecution of the Shiite Muslims in the country. But, before this happened, the conflict was based upon Muhammad and who was to rule after he had died. When Muhammad had died there were many disputes on who should succeed the Prophet Muhammad after his death in 632. Shiites believed that the prophet’s son-in-law, Ali, was to be the successor. Both consider the Koran the word of God. But, devoutness and religious practice distinguish between the two sects. However, Islam teaches that all Islam is equal so Sunni and Shiite sects fight with each other not only because of “hatred” but, also because of religious
Question 1: Explain in detail three unique aspects of Islam that are discussed in the chapter. Try and choose things that are generally unknown or misunderstood in the popular imagination. According to the introduction of Islam in chapter 5, there are many perceptions of Islam around the world. Many of these perceptions have been attributed to events that have happened since 9/11.
For us Muslims, unlike Christians who worship in a church, we worship in a mosque and any place considered clean according to certain standards. This virtue of cleanliness is also considered when it comes to what we feed our bodies. Muslims are only supposed to eat foods that are considered clean. For example, pork is prohibited from consumption. For most Christians, they feel that the restrictions on some kinds of meat as stated in the old testament of the Bible does not apply to them and therefore eat what they please. Cleanliness for Muslims is very important and therefore very strictly practiced. For example, the reason for prohibition of consumption of pork is because a pig is considered very dirty because they tend to feed on anything.
The key features of the religion of Islam were hard to define in such a short paper. I find myself fascinated with the Muslim belief system and their celebratory festivals. The more I have read Muslims, the more I have come to understand that our religions have a lot in common. As a Christian, I believe there is only one God as stated in Deuteronomy 6:4-5(NIV Bible). Muslims also believe there is only one God (Qur’an 3:18). We have our celebrations of faith via communion, prayer, Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas (the birth of Christ). Muslims have Ramadan, Eid-al-Fir, Dhu Al-Hijja, Eid-al-adha, The first day of Muharram, The twelfth day of Rabi I, and Mirajun Nabi. Our Christian rituals and beliefs are only different to Muslims, by the mere name or style in which we carry out our worship services.
In Islam the followers believe in the god Allah. Muslims believe that Muhammad was Allah's messenger. Some other things they believe is there is only one god and that is Allah, believe in equality, and everything happens in Allah’s will. The purpose of life is to live in a way that pleases Allah so one day you will gain paradise afterlife. Muslims do not eat pork of any kind.
Islam and Christianity are wide spread religions in the world. Contrast based on five pillars of Islam and Christianity rituals. In this paper I will explain their differences and similarities based on Prothero and Paden, using paradigms “rituals”. The concept of rituals are more important in understanding religion.
The fourth pillar of the Five Pillars of Islam is fasting during Ramadan. Ramadan is a sacred holiday in the Muslim faith. It falls in the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and is a celebration of Muhammad’s first revelations from God. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. This continues until the end of the month, when a celebratory feast
Islam is a religion where the people follow major beliefs. They follow the Kuran and the five pillars. The five pilars that they follow are declaring faith, giving to the poor, praying five times day, fasting during the month of ramaadan, and the pilgrimage to Mecca. When they declare faith it means they are giving faith and trusting that there is only one god (Allah). The meaning of giving to the poor is pretty obvious but it means to give to people who aren't doing as well as you are. When they pray five times a day its to worship God and to ask him the guidance through the "straight path" ( the way that God wants you to live). Next the reason they fast during the month of Ramaadan which is when people dont eat or drink anything while the
Religion is something that is not easily defined. In order to even attempt to define it, one has to look at multiple religions. Muslims believe in only one god, those who practice Hinduism believe in multiple gods that are actually different aspects of one god, Buddhists believe that others have the ability to become perfect buddhists, Confucians believe humanity can be perfected through education of the way they should relate to others and the world around them, and Daoism focuses more on the way people relate to the cosmos. However, all these religions are united by a the common thread of how people relate to the world and what this relationship should be like.
Peace, Purity, Submission and Obedience; these four words establish the fundamental explanation of the word Islam. A deep study of Islamic teachings and thought reveals that Islam is a religion of peace, security and protection; the true believers in the sight of God and His Messenger are those who embody those qualities. The dominant religion of Islam has been the center of much attention and controversy in today’s civilization. The Western perspective subjugates Islam and the Muslim counterparts as violent, aggressive, deviant and terroristic; all of which have no factual significance to the religion of Islam and the teachings of the scriptures of the Holy Quran. However, growing incidences of suicide terrorism in Islamic civilizations bestow this stereotypical belief of the Islamic religion connectedness to suicide terrorism. Hence, this depiction falsifies a true representation of Islam and the teachings of the Quran but perhaps has become the dominant ideology of Western Culture to instill fear, moral panic and demonize the religion of Islam in the creation of modern day Islamaphobia. The correlation of Islam and suicide terrorism is not an accurate representation of the teachings of the Quran and hadiths but rather a stereotypical misconception by preconceived Western ideologies. First, the teachings of Islam in regards to suicide terrorism and Jihad as elucidated in the Quran will be explored to establish the relation of suicide and Islam. Further, the Western
While Baton Rouge, cannot be considered a large city, it is home to a well-sized state University. Considering the amenities that the school has access to and the ever-rising demand for fluent English in workforces around the globe, it is not surprising there is a large international student population. My research took place among the Omani students here. I chose Islam because I felt conducting fieldwork among a group that I had been acquainted with and had several connections with, would a good way to go about learning about a religion with which I was familiar on the most basic terms. I decided to study Islam through these international students’ experiences with food. I drew on my own past feelings and experiences when I had studied
"Islam" is derived from the Arabic root salaama meaning peace, purity, submission and obedience. Islam stands for making peace by submitting to the will of God and obeying His law. Jews and Christians view Islam as the latest of the world's great religions. However, worldwide Muslims (sometimes written "Moslems") understand their universal religion as the "final religion" and the "primal religion."
