Jaelyn Sullivan Honors English IV 2 February 2024 Safety is a Priority A Long Way Gone is a true story about a thirteen-year-old named, Ishmael Beah, who becomes a boy soldier during the Civil War. Throughout the book, Beah is faced with many times where he has to put one need over another. Beah put himself first when it was necessary by putting others at risk. In a movie called “Get Out," the main character, Chris, is also faced with challenges where he has to put others at risk to save his life. When Chris’s life is put in danger, he hurts others for the safety he needs to survive. Safety is a priority, even when you put others at risk. A Long Way Gone supports the theme that safety is a priority even when you put others at risk because Ishmael has been through times where he had to put himself first in order to keep himself safe: “I had no time to go look for him, since the attack was sudden, but instead had to run into the bush alone” (45). Beah hides alone instead of looking for his friend when his life is brought into danger to secure his safety. Throughout the movie, he faces situations where his safety is jeopardized, and he must make tough decisions to protect himself even if it means others might be at risk. This theme highlights the importance of being aware of your surroundings and putting yourself first when it’s needed and the lengths someone can go to ensure their own safety, especially in dangerous circumstances. At the end of the movie Chris gets out of the house and Rose, his girlfriend finds out and goes after him to shoot him so he can’t escape and call the cops, he hurts her first in self-defense by almost choking her to death to ensure his safety, that she wouldn’t try to come back and kill him.
