In an article published in the New York Times, journalist Mark Bittman explores the common misconception that junk food is more cost efficient than buying and preparing your own food. In the article “Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?” Bittman attempts to unravel common arguments revolving around the affordability and convenience of fast food and proposes some alternatives to what he deems as a contributing factor to obesity in America. Though Bittman makes an understandable argument in the article the general tone and method in which he chooses to build his argument may seem contemptuous at times and at some points lacking in informative evidence and relevant statistics.
There can’t be one specific reason that American’s eat fast food more than cooking at home. Depending on your life style you may choose to eat fast food for different reasons. However, when Bittman opens his argument by explaining how frequently he reads statements comparing the affordability of fresh vegetables to a bag of chips, he doesn’t disclose exactly whom he is quoting. Bittman goes on to quote, “It’s more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald’s than to cook a healthy meal for them at home” (Bittman-660). But I’m left wondering, whom is Bittman referring to? By using these quotes as the foundation for his argument I feel that it would have more beneficial in determining the author’s credibility if he had been more specific in where his argument was coming from.
