Is Jazz Important To Me

Building upon the invaluable benefits I gained through jazz band, my participation in our marching unit

Jazz is an American music genre, founded by African-American musicians. It emerged in the early 1900s as its creators merged aspects from West African musical traditions with aspects from religious music and from many other types of popular music based on European traditions. While some elements of jazz were borrowed from other musical genres, the music that came forth was one of a kind, an art form of its own. A significant element of jazz is improvisation, the adjustment of a melody or countermelody as a song is being performed. Therefore, a song may be different every time it is played.

Ever since I joined jazz band in 8th grade, I have been inspired by the freedom and edginess of jazz music. I joined junior jazz band at North Kingstown High School freshman year knowing that it would be difficult for me to succeed as flutist in this genre of music, but I only grew more and more attached. Sophomore year, I enrolled in your Jazz Music Through the Decades class where you opened up my eyes to the wonders of Glenn Miller, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, and many more, who are among my favorite artists now. I cannot forget "Grinnin' In Your Face" by Son House. That song was stuck in my head for weeks and weeks after I first heard it. I have grown to develop a never ending passion for jazz that I want to build up even more.

By far one of the greatest contributions of American culture to the world is jazz music. Its captivating sound captures a mass variety of emotions. Thus creating a type of music that is considered an art form, as well as an expression of the soul. Jazz music has vastly changed the world, it has managed to greatly affect the lives of a plethora of people. The empowering sound of jazz has created new ideas and inventions .

Music always played an important role in African American culture, especially Jazz. Being one of the oldest musical genres in North America, it gained a lot of popularity. There were many popular styles, one being New Orleans Jazz dating back to the 19th century. When Jazz is mentioned, years of partying of the Charleston and Jazz bands came to mind. The Jazz age was an outburst of music, art, and culture in America.

     Jazz is a style of music that began and has been revolutionized within the United States. Jazz music first appeared in the city of New Orleans and eventually moved onto Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, and New York City. Jazz unites different elements of African, African- American, religious, brass brand, and blues style of music. The music of Jazz, and its changes through the years, is now a form of music that is known and respected throughout this nation and the world.

The mystery of Jazz and its powerful impact on the music community can be explained largely by the context of it’s creation. Jazz was born in the United States, and because of this, many have referred to Jazz as “America’s music.” Like America, Jazz has a balance between structure and spontaneity. It capitalizes on the fluidity of the musicians, having several different instruments with independent spirits, coming together as one to form a great piece of music. Unlike other styles of music, Jazz has a certain way about it that makes it stand-alone in the world of genres. It improvises, moves, and transforms itself in a moment’s notice based on the musician’s intuition. Just as America harbors democracy, so too does a jazz ensemble, showing both the responsibility to a larger group, yet still allowing room for individual freedom. It all comes down to how well others can respect the overall framework and structure of the jingle.

Jazz has been a part of American culture throughout history that is still being explored today. Jazz has a rich history that goes back many years. Jazz has also developed into many different styles that trace to places all around the world. There have been many jazz musicians throughout the years. Jazz music has a very complex, but good musical tune and instrumentation to it.

Our cultures are what makes us who we are today, and one of the biggest things culture has provided us with is music.With the help of venues, artists, and schools jazz music is becoming a more popular genre. Jazz was once a popular way to express yourself and it greatly impacted many cultures. It also has greatly impacted the music we listen to today. There is an infinite amount of music genres, and jazz music is a very crucial one to our history.

We can understand America’s culture through the lens of music. We can identify how it became a major part of American culture and how it still affects us today. Many people ask them self’s today how music became a huge part of American culture and how did it all begin. Where did it originate and who came up with the type of genres that were popular and are still a big hit in today’s music. I know for a fact that a popular and loved genre of music that is still a tremendous impart in our lives today is the famous Jazz music.

Jazz is one of few purely American art forms. Its creation came out of the southern United States and the social conditions associated with the relationship between the white and African American communities there (Larson 1). African American musicians in particular were the key proponents in the development of jazz in the early 20th century. The creation and shaping of jazz music came from a combination of the musical styles of spirituals, the blues, ragtime, and Western European classical music (Larson 37-38). Although jazz originated from these four styles, defining jazz itself cannot be done so plainly. Since its origin, jazz has continued to progress and branch out into a wide variety of musical styles and genres. At its root, jazz is about the individual expression of the musician (Larson 2). John Coltrane was one of many musicians that used jazz as this medium. Through his early works in the bebop and hard bop styles to free form and more spiritual styled music later in his career, Coltrane pursued deeper expression from his music (Wikipedia). John Coltrane’s upbringing and early interest in music led to a successful career of highly innovative works that have left a lasting legacy and influence on the jazz community.

4) A) Jazz would be recalled easily because it is the last word in the list. Recency would take effect and people would write down Jazz in the beginning of recall. This would pertain to serial position and people would be dumping out the information from their STM. Jazz is also similar to most of the other words, which concept pertains to music.

Jazz has been a very controversial issue. For some people, jazz has been the greatest invention ever, meanwhile for others, jazz has been a revolution from the ‘Negro’ community. In other word, white people did not took serious that jazz was getting into a new level. Jazz was revolutionizing the music industry. Even though white people was getting into the jazz environment, it still did not matter to the critics. I will get much more into criticizing throughout this essay because from 1997 to 1930 the jazz industry and the ‘Negro’ community was being attacked by criticism and racism. But jazz was not only an African American music, towards the 1920’s, White people started to get involved in jazz industry.

A question that kept running through my head for many years, came back to me recently. How have I done to find and retain as many jazz tunes? How could I remember all the songs of Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Lester Young, Django Reinhardt, and many other jazz musicians.
