Throughout my life, many people have impacted me. Whether it be a teacher, a fellow classmate, a parent, or even a celebrity, someone has influenced me in some way. I have found that the older I get, the more I really think about life and what really matters in this world. Some people would say that materialistic items are the key to happiness, while others will disagree by saying that possessions cannot fill the void in your life forever. There will always be something that you will want so that you can maintain the happiness that is put into possessions. Others will say that conformity is a popular thing in society and the only way to be happy is to conform to the way society says you should. Many people will completely agree with that because they are afraid to stand out in a world that tells them it is not okay to be different or to be an individual. If you want to be truly happy, one must break away from the chains of conformity. To live in a world that tells us who we should be is the greatest waste that anyone could fall susceptible to. I have always felt that I was born in the wrong generation. I do not like any music from this era (except Adele) because I do not like the way music sounds in this era. I prefer to listen to old country music, Broadway music, and anything by Bette Midler. I also love watching old television shows, such as I Love Lucy, Bewitched, and I Dream of Jeannie. I do not idolize anyone from this generation of celebrities (Adele is an
The dramatic growth of ancient Athens from a powerful polis to an Aegean Empire was a result of the hierarchy in ancient Athens. The roles of the people played a big part in this advancement. Therefore, the roles in ancient Athens were very structured and rigid. The male citizens worked very hard politically, while they left the women with the task of bearing children, and the slaves with the backbreaking physical work that allowed the city to function.
It is no lie that the United States has diversity—but that does not stop those at the top from trying to stomp any exhibition of that diversity out. Since the beginning, America has been driven by an innate sense of superiority that we have the right to do what we want to do as long as it furthers our democracy. Regrettably, the reality behind this notion is malevolent. In the past, Anglos “conquered” those from cultures who they saw as inferior for what they saw as the “greater good”; even today, we prosecute those from different cultures simply for being different and not conforming to the American norm. Sadly, with this goal of furthering the majority, the U.S. has forgotten the
Mummification Tools By : Daniel Lee Mummies, Pyramids, and Hieroglyphics,All from ancient Egypt. Ancient Egyptians had many beliefs. One of the beliefs that they had is that after death was a afterlife. Before the person went to the afterlife they needed to be mummified. To mummify the person egyptians needed tools.
People that follow beliefs or desires go on to make the world a better place. Individuals that have changed the world took the courage to stand up for what they believe in. Voicing unpopular ideas makes a difference in the world because if nobody were to say anything, everything would stay the same even though wrong things are happening. People that have stood up for what they believe in have made an enormous impact in our daily lives, because they made their voices heard.
In this dystopian world the people are dependant upon soma at anytime when unpleasant thoughts, feelings or emotions are shown. Soma can drive any bad thoughts out of mind. Doctors declare that one cubic centimeter of soma cures ten gloomy sentiments. Like soma drug in Brave New World, in The Giver, there is a relief-of-pain medication that is provided to community members to relieve their pains so that no one can suffer. Whenever there is any kind of unpleasant thought or pain or disease, people are immediately given this unnamed medication.
Willa Cather's "Paul's Case," displays the conflict between conformity and individuality through the main character, Paul. On a number of occasions, Paul is forced to lie and steal to escape the conformists who wish to control him and stifle his unique imagination. However, his lying, stealing, and attempts to escape the conformists, only force Paul into isolation, depression, and feeling a sense of shame for his individuality. Throughout the story one might see Cather's constant contrast of individuality versus conformity, as well as Paul's lying and stealing. Cather seems to draw the conclusion that extreme individuals, much like Paul are simply misunderstood, and not offered the acceptance they desire
“Group conformity scares the pants off me because it’s so often a prelude to cruelty towards anyone who doesn’t want to-or can’t-join the Big Parade.” The style of text I have chosen to focus on is individuality, as I believe that uniqueness of an individual is essential for freedom. Through analysing the texts Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, Equilibrium by Kurt Wimmer, Blind Faith by Ben Elton, The Machine Stops by E.M. Foster and I Always do what Teddy Says by Harry Harrison. I have noticed that societies are being controlled through the idea of conflicts and religious symbolism and conformity, which are prominent in all the societies. The intent to trigger us of the dystopias that could arise in our world today is prominent. I have also
Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” Becoming yourself while not conforming is the greatest accomplishment. Whether or not we think we do it or not, we all have done it at some point in our lives. In 1964, a young woman named Kitty Genovese was murdered outside of her apartment. Many people heard this innocent woman being brutally murdered and just assumed someone would help. So why do people just assume someone will help? Why are we so scared to stand up for what we believe? Why are we so terrified to stick out? Stop conforming and be an individual.
To conform or to not conform is the real question. Google defines conformity as “Compliance with standards, rules, or laws.” I define conformity as someone going along with society although they may or may not believe it’s the right thing to do. The people who refuse to conform to society are called nonconformist. Although both conformity and nonconformity has its benefits, it can also be unfavorable for you. In other words, IT SUCKS!! And this demonstrated through both fictional stories and in real life. Two very good examples are Snowball the pig (conformist) from the book “Animal Farm” By George Orwell and Summer Pimp (nonconformist) who used to be one of my good friends.
Many individuals is faced with the decision of conforming or choosing personal desire, and it is not an easy decision. It is hard because being shunned by others for being different is not a good feeling. Choosing to conform over personal desire, often leads to loss. On the other hand, personal desire is what sets others apart and gives them joy. In the poem, “The Jackhammer Syndrome”, Al Purdy discusses the good and bad memories he has experienced. He goes through his memories of when he had fun and made mistakes, but he reflects on what he could have done better. The author of “The Jackhammer Syndrome informs against choosing the welcoming joy of conformity over the long-term gains of personal desire. Making the decision to pursue conformity over personal desire may seem easy at first, but if the choice is to conform, the joy it gives will not last. Making the decision to pursue conformity over personal desire Conformity may seem to give joy at first, but it does not last. When Al is playing pool with his brother, he wants to win badly, but losses. However when he did not care to win, Al wins! Conforming can lead to loss but personal desire has much to gain. If the choice is to conform, personal identity may be lost. In my life, I recognize several instances in which I found several similarities between Al and myself. I have made decisions that were not always good ones such as swimming across long distances with friends.
Welcome to conformity high, in this short booklet, we will explain how to survive your first year in high school.
Since the modern era, a major limitation of society remains: the obsession of one’s appearances, and the subsequent alienation of those perceived to not fit the ideal. The general media unceasingly promotes the thin ideal, spawns a multi-billion dollar diet industry, and permeates major aspects of society, such as the medical community. The hatred for one’s appearance is entirely a social construct perpetuated by the media. More importantly, the ideal has alienated those perceived to be outside of it, which is the majority of the U.S. population. The conformity stifles individualism on various levels. America was made great because of its diversity, which is now threatened by pressures to conform. It encompasses all aspects of life, even
A statement that stuck out to me was that “people are more important than things.” This is an idea that seems to have been innate for me. Since I was young, I always cared a lot about the people in my life, and that has translated to how I am now. I value friendships so much. I believe that yes, you have your family and they should always be there and support you, but having friends creates such more stable foundation in the relationships that you have. You can make a lot of money and buy whatever you want, but money does not equate happiness. I appreciate the people who are in my life and all the experiences we have shared together, which I will continue to reminisce about and keep forever. Money or things could not give me all those experiences. Sometimes I feel like people are so driven by their need for a sense of achievement and wealth/power that they push people away and give up any chance of building their friendships and enjoying the fruits of life that you can only get through your interaction with people. These people just end up alone, and that is something I do not want to do. Randy Pausch was very successful at being able to always put people before things.
I boarded a private jet that was heading to a discrete location a few miles from the Canada-U.S border. I had to do a private deal for some people I knew and I didn’t have the luxury of choice this time around. My boss told me I had nothing to worry about, just make the deal and head back to the plane but, I didn’t trust him and I was nervous. We were heading North and the flight was supposed to be five hours. Two hours into the flight I heard caution alarms going off and I started to panic. I walked up to the cockpit to check on the pilots but the door was locked and I could feel the plane losing altitude fast. I decided the best plan of action was to strap myself in and brace for impact. As I slowly regained consciousness to see the
If there’s anything I’m sure about myself from the last 18 years of my life, it’s that I’m a people pleaser. Everything I do is solely in acknowledgement of what everyone around me wants or needs, and I often find myself putting others before me; I try to be someone that everyone can like while at the same time I refuse to be a conformist. My very personality is conflicting in the fact that I’m both a realist and a dreamer, and it’s because of those reasons, I can honestly say I wouldn’t be some basic ice cream flavor. Instead I see myself more as a combination of two: Chocolate and Strawberry. As a bit of a feminist, It’s very relevant in the fact that these flavors are often labeled as feminine, but are also construed as the most commonly
