Based in Irving Coffman's argument that “If tobacco companies have paid a financial settlement with several states due to the health problems it caused. Then, manufacturers of other legal harmful products such as alcohol and guns should also have to pay financial settlements in return for the problems they cause.” I strongly agree with his point of view in order to help prevent more people from damaging their health, and suffering later on. Moreover, if all the legal harmful manufacturers start to pay a financial settlement, then the prices of these products would raise up, which might help to limited people from buying these harmful products because not everybody can afford what others can. Before, most of the time that I was in my sport
Gil Ackerman is a prominent realtor in Florida that truly understands life as a Hungarian-American seeking a community with shared traditions. There is a thriving Hungarian-American population in South Florida constantly influencing the culture and experience of life in Florida and America. For many Hungarian-Americans looking to embrace the evolving way of life of a Hungarian-American living in America, while still looking to live recognizing their roots and rich Hungarian history, Hungarian-Americans have created a culture visible and authentic that is a true melding of both countries and backgrounds.

Coffman’s argument is stating that if tobacco companies are paying a financial settlement for selling harmful products, then manufacturers of other harmful products should do the same. I believe he thinks that it is only fair to make every company that is selling product with the same impact on people as tobacco pay as the tobacco company is doing. It makes sense in a way, because if this company is being charged for something that other companies are also doing, those other companies should be treated as their equal and charged for the same claim. Now,I think it is a sound claim to make in regards to these companies in particular because although the customers are buying the products and should be responsible consumers, the manufacturers are the ones putting the harmful products to their availability. It is like giving the customer a gun and ask only money in return such as the other companies are doing. They are making it easy for the people to harm their health and with gun marketers, to harm others by selling these products. I know it is a supply and demand world and if it is what the people want and what they will pay money
A reason as to why other companies should not have to pay a financial settlement is because of self-determination. Going from health lungs to risks of lung cancer because of tobacco did not happen because of the company, it happened because the user allowed it to happen. An example of this is the fast food industries, especially McDonalds, who are frequently hated for "making society obese," for their fattening and unhealthy foods. It is a common
The Egyptians are accredited with being the first to embalm around 6000 BC. Embalming in Egypt was done for two reasons, religion, sanitation and preservation. The Egyptian’s believed in Immortality they believed when you died your soul would not return the body until a complete three Thousand Year Journey called the circle of necessity. The body would then be able to rise from the dead to live with the gods there were five steps to process of their form of embalming called Mummification. They would first remove the brain and internal organs.
Although the negative roles of smoking are very apparent, the tobacco industry plays an important social role in the world. Many teens use cigarettes as a means for bonding with their peers. Adults also use cigarettes as a form of "ice breaker" when socializing with others. The tobacco industry also provides a great source of revenue for the economy. The federal taxes on tobacco products bring in billions of dollars into the government's budget for various programs. So while the ruling could pose devastating effects on Canadian tobacco companies, society will benefit in the
According to Irving Coffman in his passage, he stated that "manufactures of other legal but harmful products such as alcohol and guns, should also have to pay financial settlements in return for the problem they cause. " If tobacco companies will pay for the problems they cause. Then, most of the companies should also pay for the problems they cause to society. But we all know that if we use too much something, it will become detriment to us. So, why companies will pay for the fees in their damage? They are in business. And not just tobacco, guns, or alcohol companies have a legal but harmful products, but also fashion, technology, language and etc.
If we look at the tobacco industry we clearly see that the manufactures that make tobacco products help fund and provide research on the use of their product, not hinder it. We the people have access to that information, and our right to choose whether or not we use tobacco products remains in our hands.
was 35.1 billion dollars. With a product that kills so many of its customers, your only concern in this industry is to increase sales and make a profit. Definitely in the tobacco industry and most others, it is my opinion that you cannot cater to the best interest of both the company and the consumer. Even a good company with the best intentions will eventually come to a crossroad where choosing what is best for one will not have such a great outcome for the other. Their best interests will ultimately conflict, and you will be forced make a choice between the two.
The use of tobacco is a very controversial topic here in the United States. The harmful side effects of tobacco are well known and consequently, many believe that it should be outlawed. Though this has not yet occurred, constant regulations on the industry and
Every year, there are over 400,000 smoking-related deaths in the United States. A large percentage of these are due to lung cancer, whose leading cause is smoking. However, not all deaths are smokers themselves. Anyone in the vicinity can fall victim to second hand smoke. These people, through no action of their own, can have their lives threatened.
However our concern here is not only about the cigarette as a product but with the ethics of cigarettes as well, that affect the social process of marketing. This is because marketing process makes things worse and is also considered as unethical, and as a result has a significant negative impact on the societal welfare. Multinational tobacco companies apply sophisticated strategies ( such as putting flavor in the cigarettes and placing cigarettes in the shops near the sweets to make them more appealing) and invest huge amounts of money for marketing, in order to establish brand familiarity and future loyalty among young peoplem, to secure profits in the long run. 'The tobacco epidemic is a man-made international health crisis, created and sustained by multinational tobacco corporations.' (Yach, Brinchmann, Bellet page 2).
The tobacco industry is important to the economy. In 1991, worldwide tobacco sales exceeded $59.8 billion and in 1992 the industry was rated as one of the top one hundred advertisers (Pechmann and Ratneshwar, 1994). However, there are high prices to pay - socially, economically, and personally - as a result of this industry. Annual mortality figures indicate that cigarette smoking is the number one cause of preventable death in the United States. An estimated 390,000 people die each year of smoke related illnesses, which is greater than the combined mortality for cocaine, crack, AIDS, homicide, suicide, and alcohol abuse (Botvin, G., Baker, Botvin, E., Dusenbury, Cardwell, and Diaz, 1993).
As the proposition points out, cigarettes are not dangerous because they are defective; rather they are inherently, potentially, harmful. But people should still be allowed to choose to buy and smoke them. A better comparison is to unhealthy foods. High cholesterol or a high intake of fat can be extremely harmful, leading to heart disease, obesity, and other conditions; but manufacturers of these products are not punished. Consumers simply like the taste of fatty food.
The war on smoking has existed for decades. With the advent of more tenacious laws prohibiting smoking in public locations, and most recently Minnesota’s historic tobacco settlement, many actions against “Big Tobacco” have become more successful. Anti-smoking campaigns have become more confrontational, directly targeting tobacco companies in an effort to expose its manipulative and illegal marketing tactics. On the surface, last November's $206 billion settlement agreement between the tobacco companies and 46 states looks like a serious blow for Big Tobacco. In addition to the money, it contains some important concessions: a ban on outdoor advertising, limits on
