Quest I- “Cheer up, it’s just the end of the world” In Ira Chernus’ article, “Cheer up, it’s just the of the world”, Chernus explains the history of apocalypses, apocalypses are everywhere, death is not the same during an apocalypse, and that people will always think that there will be a better life on the other side of an apocalypse. Chernus also explains how the thought of apocalypse is hard for Americans to grasp. The article mentions and goes into detail about the history of apocalypse and the stories that surround apocalypses. This history includes a calling from Thomas Paine to revolt and start this world over again. The first heading in the article is definitely a play on emotion because Chernus sets the stage for the end of the world as we know it but then explains that this is just setting the scene for the second part which is a better world that takes hold. This is a play on emotion because it strikes fear in the reader, but then it gives them hope that things will get better. The second part of the article is a stated assumption. Because Chernus is describing all kinds of apocalyptic situations that have already happened the reader automatically assumes that another one of those situations is inevitable. The third and fourth sections of the article plays on the reader’s sense of logic. The third part of the article is easy to understand because with the definition of apocalypse comes death and the third section is all about death that will occur in the event of an apocalypse. The fourth part of the article is also very logical because it is about hope and that’s something that everyone will have in the event of the end of the
