To invoke is to invite in to yourself or into your energy realm, depending on some traditions. Invoking is usually one when wanting to encourage communication between both the material and the spirit world. It is part of many magico-religious practices. Invoking is to call in; it enters the consciousness. Invoke is from the Old French ‘invoquer’, to invoke or implore. Invoking is a form of voluntary possession. It is similar to, but the opposite of, evoke. Invoking is summoning forth a deity or energy inside so it can manifest itself through a human host. Like evoke, there is an element of vocalization to the word invoke. When invoking, the invocation can be spoken, sung, or changed aloud. Words of Power are often used. It is giving permission to be possessed, in a way, or even completely. The term invoke reminds me of what may happen during a séance or a psychic reading if allowed. Invoking may happen during a ritual or even during prayer. I find that invoking is something that should not be messed with, especially by those who are new, learning, or inexperienced. Modern Wiccans or Pagans may use this term in their practices when they may wish a God or Goddess to manifest through themselves, to speak through them. They may invoke a deity during a celebration to thank them, for assistance or inspiration. They might invoke a spirit when they are doing a reading for another person so they invite that spirit inside of themselves so that spirit can speak to the other person.
