The message I will be conveying is the importance of embracing failure. My role will be myself as I understand myself the best. The audience addressed will be my fellow classmates. In the format of a speech. In Into The Wild American authors define success as the completion of a goal, and failure as a result of arrogance and disillusionment as the harsh reality caused by failure. Chris McCandless succeeds in achieving his goals when surviving in the wild. He shot lots of game porcupines, squirrels and even took down a moose. McCandless had lived off of the food that the wild was providing him with and he had experienced most of what he wanted to experience. “ Positivism, the unsurpassable joy of life aesthetic. Respectfully yours, Holden Caulfield” (12.)
It is clear here in this quote that Holden doesn’t care about Mr. Spencer flunking him at all. Holden just accepts the fact that he is going to fail his class. That sort of stuff isn’t relevant to him therefore embracing his own opinion and his “failure”.
My second quote takes place towards the middle of the book. Holden has left his school to go out into the real world he gets himself a hotel room in the boonies of the city. He still doesn’t know what time it is. He gets dressed and goes down to the lobby and finds where the club is. “ I ordered a scotch and soda, and told the guy not to mix it- i said it fast as hell, because if you hem and haw they think you’re under the age of 21 and won’t sell you any intoxicating liquor. I had trouble with him anyway, though. “ I’m sorry sir,” he said “ but do you have some verification of your age? Your driver 's license perhaps? I gave him this very cold stare, like he had just insulted the hell out of me, and asked him, “Do i look like i 'm under 21? “I’m sorry sir but we have our”- “okay okay” i say. I figured the hell with it. “Bring me a coke.” He started to walk away and I called him back. “ Can 'tcha stick a little rum in it or something?” I asked him very nicely and all. “ Im very sorry sir….. He beat it on me. I didn 't hold it against him though. They could have lost their jobs selling to minors.
Here in this quote Holden has been rejected
There is another lesson Holden had to learn. He needed to learn how to be satisfied with his company. He was always looking for someone to call or someone to talk to. When he finally did have some company, he did nothing but criticize them. For example, Sally Hayes went out with Holden, and throughout the entire time he complained and criticized her. He
“Hey guys! This is the last communication you shall receive from me. I now walk out to live amongst the wild. Take care, it was great knowing you” (Qtd. In Krakauer 69). After graduating from Emory University, Christopher McCandless abandoned everything, gave his entire savings account to charity, and then hitchhiked to Alaska to live in the wild. In the novel, Into the Wild, Was McCandless justified in shunning society? McCandless was justified in shunning society because he simply wanted to find himself and be independent without any distractions from his friends or family.
During the novel Holden lies to cover up his real feelings or as an excuse to not tell the truth. In Chapter 3 Holden says, “I’m the most terrific liar…” he continues by saying how frequently he lies to get himself out of trouble (Salinger, 2010:17). After Holden is expelled he decides to leave Pency and life it up for three days in New York because he cannot stay longer. Holden cannot go home sooner because he’s not feel like telling the truth to his parents (Salinger, 2010: 54). Holden choses to do the wrong thing because it is easier than to stay at Pency till Wednesday or to face his parents. Holden is contradictory he says, “I’m quite illiterate but I read a lot.” (Salinger, 2010:19). One cannot be illiterate if you read a lot. Holden is even more contradictory when he speaks of Allie in heaven but admitted that he is an atheist (Salinger, 2010:107). It is clear that Holden’s words and actions are contradictory when he says that the movies are phony but attends the movies a few times during the three days (Salinger, 2010:30).Holden’s character is riddled with dishonesty, wrong choices, and contradictions and true to an
TRANSITION: Now that we know some key difference between brand name drugs and generic drugs, we can take a look at their prices.
Specific Purpose: To persuade the audience to support the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Just because a soldier comes back and has PSTD does not mean he will go into a work places snap and go on a violent rampage. These men and women come home and want come back into society and be accepted, welcomed, and feel like they have helped the people they fought for. The don’t wanna be singled out and and ignored because of what they went through, it is just not fair not to hire someone that is perfectly qualified and able to do a job and not give them that job because they were a veteran.
Persuasion is key when trying to compel your audience to do or believe something. Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. and Fannie Lou Hamer all delivered powerful, persuasive speeches that will go down in history. The use of these creative individuals’ language and persuasion played a pivotal role within the civil rights movement. We can observe this in the speakers’ rhetoric devices like ethos, logos and pathos.
Did you know that only 19 states and the District of Columbia have laws in place that
1. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed that 515,000 people were injured in various car crashes in the United States due to texting. Around 28 percent of all crashes in 2008 were caused by drivers in the age group of 18 and 29, who admitted to texting while driving. A. People commit murders largely in the heat of passion, under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or because they are mentally ill, giving little or no thought to the possible consequences of their acts.
The World Wide Fund for Nature or WWF for short has worked at reducing our carbon footprint for over 45 years. Even since 1985, the World Wildlife Fund Network has invested over $1.165 billion in more than 11,000 projects. According to the WWF website, their mission is to conserve nature which they are actively doing in 100 countries with 1.2 million members in the United States and close to 5 million globally. There are several ways that everyone can do their part in supporting WWF. Supporters can donate money, adopt a species, or take action and directly help conserve our environment. I am going to discuss WWF’s cause and importance, how they are working to conserve nature, and how all of you can help support the cause.
Holden is a profoundly negative person, he is constantly judging other people, calling them ‘phonies’ and criticising them. For instance when he says “I was surrounded by phonies.” of his time at Elkton Hills. (CITR, 14) Throughout the novel, Holden repeatedly behaves immature and makes irresponsible and destructive decisions, even if he knows it is the wrong thing to
I am sure that everyone of you have heard about aliens and UFOs. Indeed, we all have heard about the famous case of aliens and UFOs in Roswell, New Mexico. Most people might be interested in the topic of aliens, but I know that the majority of you just think of it as rumours and the existence of them are impossible. Therefore, I am standing here in front all of you to make you change your perspective. I am strongly confident that I have found the evidence of their real existence to convince all of you.
a. The following poem by Robert Test entitled, "To Remember Me," shows the importance of organ donation.
An American literary theorist and novelist, Kenneth Burke, once said, “Wherever there is persuasion, there is rhetoric, and wherever there is rhetoric, there is meaning.” (Burke) Barack Obama, Martin Luther King Jr. and Fannie Lou Hamer all delivered powerful persuasive speeches that will go down in history. The use of these motivational individuals’ language and persuasion played a pivotal role within the civil rights movement, the movement that achieved the most important breakthrough in the equal rights legislation. We can observe this in the speakers’ rhetoric devices like ethos, logos and pathos.
