May 6, 2016 Abstract
An examination of the patrol officer’s jobs and duties took place. The gathering of information and interviewing a seasoned patrol offer assisted in this examination. The city in which the patrol officer works is also studied. Research of the city of Hueytown’s population and history helped to understand the demographics and crime within the city. While Hueytown’s violent crimes are low, thefts and burglaries rank the highest. Communities, including the city of Hueytown, place patrol officers on the streets in order to protect and serve. Officer Louis Phillips, Jr. gave an interview that takes an in depth look at his journey as a patrol officer. Interview of a Patrol Officer
Part One: Research
In 1825, Abner McGee entered into a tract of land, now known as Hueytown, Alabama. In 1833 Mortimor Jordan purchased thousands of acres of land from McGee and Octavus Spencer. Several other people bought these tracts of land at an auction. Sam and Jesse Huey settled in the lower part of the country and obtained land on Valley Creek near the Rock Creek Settlement (Smith, 1962, para. 1-3). Hueytown is located in western Jefferson County, Alabama. As of the 2010 Census the population of Hueytown was 16,105 (censusviewer.com). The city has a history of farming, but also known for the steel and coal mining industry. The city is proud to be the home of racecar driver,
On Friday, May 06, 2015 at 5:00 pm, I interviewed Westwego Police Officer Jeffrey Johnson at Starbucks in Marrero, Louisiana (1677 Barataria Blvd, Marrero, LA 70072). The city of Westwego is a suburb of New Orleans which is located in Jefferson Parish along the Mississippi River. Officer Johnson has been employed with the Westwego police department for fourteen years but also works a second job due to the unsatisfying salary and hopes to retire from both in the near future. Officer Johnson was enticed by the job security and benefits package which allowed him to provide for his family. He most importantly desired a career in law enforcement because of his long foreseeing passion to help and make a difference in the lives of others. The Westwego
Being one of the largest populated and diverse cities, a peace officer that’s employed within Harris County, TX boundary, would encounter individuals from different ethnic backgrounds, financial status, religions, etc. commonly. Furthermore, a peace officer in this area would be faced with strenuous incidents more often in a rural area and would benefit the peace officer with experience. I had the benefit of interviewing Senior Peace Officer Victor Becerra with the Houston Police Department. Officer Becerra career has lasted 26 years and works out of the Near Town store front as a Divisional Reactive Team Officer.
The study divided fifteen Kansas City patrol beats into three categories. In five beats, labeled “reactive beats,” officers only responded to calls for service. Random preventive patrol was maintained in five beats and in five “proactive beats” patrol was increased two to three times the normal level. The researchers found that preventive patrol had no measureable effect on crime or citizen feelings of security (Braga & Weisburd, 2010). Though the Kansas City Preventive Patrol study revealed random preventive patrol was ineffective, the study did not examine why.
Since the beginning of police work in America, the system has changed from disorganized chaos into a well structured and rather complex network of communication, response efforts, and detection of lawless behavior. From the creation of the town watch to the transformation of the first police force in the colonies to the lawlessness of the old west and the efforts to revive efficient police work, America has been ever advancing its protection of those who live in the White House, the suburbs, the slums, and even those struggling on the streets. The History of Policing in America is not derived from one origin of time but rather taking the highest qualities of protection from within itself and countries of both friend and foe.

I started my career in 2004 with the Sherwood Police Department (SPD), in Sherwood, Oregon and have been committed to policing ever since. Since day one, I have been truly blessed and love the profession. During my time with Sherwood, I received eight performance commendations for my investigative work, commitment to the department, and community involvement. I was also honored with the departments first ever Life Saving Award and Medal of Valor for my work and commitment to the community. (Awards) I worked hard and dedicated myself to living up to the mission and vision of the department. A5,A23,A31,A39,C12,C13,C15-21
To find the truth in any interview/interrogation it takes a skilled and qualified investigator. Criminal Investigators continue to learn every day. They find new techniques to approach an interview/interrogation, they learn new ways to talk to people, and the success of their interviews/interrogations depends on their ability to take what they learn and apply it. In order to develop great interview and interrogation skills, one must be able to communicate well verbally and non-verbally, be able to read body language, and know the facts of their case to be able to ask the right questions. To be a successful Criminal Investigator, one needs to have great interrogation/interview skills.
The number one career that I want to pursue is in law enforcement. Unfortunately, it did not show up on my list of occupations produced by my Self-Directed Search results. My number one goal is to obtain a career as a Deputy Officer and then work myself up to detective. Since working in law enforcement is my number one goal I decided to interview two different Sheriff Deputy Officers. The first Sheriff Deputy Officer that I interviewed was Deputy Benzor from the Los Angeles Sheriff Department. The interview that I conducted with Deputy Benzor was an informal interview that occurred while I was doing a patrol ride along. This was probably the best time to conduct an informal interview because during the patrol ride along I got to
It is nice to meet someone that was raised in Memphis, TN and interested the same field. I also feel that criminal justice is a great field. Why because criminal justice would give you an opportunity to learn something different. Also criminal justice would give you a chance to explore different things. I'm still not sure what I want to do with my degree. But law enforcement is one of my options.
For my professional interview I met with Detective Doug Stanton. Detective Stanton is the head detective of the Anderson city police forensic lab. He has worked at Anderson city police for 28 years he works seven years of patrol and then 21 years of forensic lab and IT work. He's a highly decorated and well trusted member of the Anderson city police force an example to us all. When talking to Detective Stanton he explained how the number one problem he sees in his day-to-day work is under staffing. The lack of personnel Throughout the Anderson city Police Department causes stress on the officers and less motivation to get things done. "We have the manpower to investigate major crimes but lesser crimes get pushed down the list for a
Police Agencies in modern society are a part of the American fabric to serve and protect the American public. The United States currently have more than 15,000 police agencies, (Walker & Katz, 2011). Police Departments across the United States face similar critical issues policing. All police officers face dangers in the job of policing the dangers can emanate from internal and external origins. Police officers have continued to evolve to serve communities by finding better less than lethal alternatives to weapons used. In addition, police departments have continued to keep up with
The issue of police-community relations has been a social problem that needs to be mended. There is a huge debate about how the police are viewed negatively from the low-income, high crime areas due to the large amount of patrolling in these neighborhoods. Having the police in the public eye can cause the police to get the wrath of anything negative that has happened on the streets. Clarence Edward states that “The absence of a holistic police/community approach in attempting to solve frictions between these two groups” allow negative police-community relations to continue. There are strategies that can be put in place to strengthen these bonds between the community and the police departments.
The job of working in a law enforcement staff is challenging and it is exactly that feature which attracts me to the job. The job of working in field patrol, investigations, crime prevention, community relations and service related activities is of utmost importance for me. It is of utmost priority to be part of first level supervisor and act as a watch commander for administering briefings, patrol beats, supervision and activities on assigned shift. I wish to respond to major crimes, accident scenes and emergency situations as a police sergeant and assume the responsibility for important functions, special programs, projects and functions. I intend to provide diverse administrative support to the management staff and conduct operational studies.
With limited resources for majority of police departments across the nation, along with competing interest, when determining patrol distribution administrators should consider the following three areas when committing resources. First, cost or budget allocated towards meeting core responsibilities such as patrol, where and how to deploy those resources and finally when. Patrol for example is a core responsibility and is foundational for both police officers and the public alike. For police officers it is where they spend a majority of their early careers interacting with the pubic and developing their skills as officers (Fritsch, Liederbach, & Taylor 2009). Conversely, for the public patrol is the most visible way to interact with local law enforcement, and where the public develops a sense of how their tax dollars may be utilized in support of public safety.
When it comes to issues within any organization, it is always important and critical to examine the origins, the successes and failures in order to grow and improve. The Modern Police Operations is not excluded from that process. In this body of work, the history of law enforcement operations as well as the key law enforcement agencies that are responsible for enforcing law, the explanation of one major change to law enforcement operations and the reason why the change was necessary, the opinion of the author in regards to whether or not the change was an improvement to police operations and lastly, discussing the main requirements related to training that local and federal law enforcement agencies must address.
