Officers are said to be there to protect and serve members in society. Whenever there is a robbery, or accident the police is called in to perform their duties and even those beyond their call. Police officers, because of the stressful nature of their job are more often than not faced with an inadequate amount of hours of sleep. Interruptions of the sleep cycle is said to have account for many of the physiological illnesses experienced by individuals (Prather, Bogdan & Hariri 2013) and (Ratna & Sud 2008). The Restoration Theory developed by Oswald (1966) also emphasized the importance of sleep for the proper functioning of the body. The longer police officers prolong their time in the service their stress levels would have detrimental effects on them (Chaping, Brannen, Singer & Walker, 2008, p. 346).These severe effects can hamper an officer’s physical health because Selye (1936) exhaustion stage explains that this is when the body becomes exhausted and breaks down causing burnout. The impact of rotating shift work on police officers in terms of fatigue, increased stress, and other long term medical problems cannot be overstated. In 2011, an in-depth research project, “Sleep disorders, health, and safety in police officers” (JAMA, 2011), was conducted involving a group of North American police officers in regards to the sleep disorders and the health and safety of the officers participating. The study involved 4,957 officers that worked rotating shifts over a period of approximately two years. The findings were startling and revealed that 3,930 officers (79.3%) were overweight or obese. Another 40.7% tested positive for at least one (1) sleep disorder and the majority of those that tested positive for a disorder
Shift work which requires extreme time commitment outside normal working hours places great strain on the mentality of workers, specifically those working in careers relating to health or emergency services. This report will discuss whether shift work has a negative impact on the mentality of police officers specifically by investigating what shift work is, the difference between good and bad mental health, the effect shift work has on the mental health of employees and to prevent or treat these effects.

Gasto-Jejunal (GJ) Tubes are placed in the stomach like a G-tube. This is a long tube that is threaded into the jejunal portion of the small intestine. Most GJ tubes have two ports a G-port though the stomach and a J-port thought the small intestine. The J-port is used for as the feeding tube (feeding is continuous) and the G-port is used for venting and sometimes medications. If the individual is experiencing retching, discomfort, or diarrhea, the feeding is too fast. This type of tube is typically used for individuals with poor stomach mobility, respiratory problems from reflux or chronic vomiting. The balloon button of the GJ tube needs to be changed every 3 months. The tube is more likely to be clogged, so flushing needs to be through.
The relevance of sleep to the human body cannot be over emphasised. From this study we can learn that sleep is important and with out it we could not properly function in our day to day lives. Sleep deprivation studies has taught as these important factors.

An interesting study I came across discussed the effects of sleep deprivation on rats. Rats normally live 3-4 years, but those deprived of REM sleep only lived about 5 weeks, and those deprived of all sleep only lived for 3 weeks. Curiously, the sleep-deprived rats experienced abnormally low body temperature and developed sores on their tails and paws. This study exemplifies the theory that sleep has restorative properties and may be necessary for the immune system to function, which explains why sores appeared on the rats’ bodies when they did not get enough sleep.
