Officers are said to be there to protect and serve members in society. Whenever there is a robbery, or accident the police is called in to perform their duties and even those beyond their call. Police officers, because of the stressful nature of their job are more often than not faced with an inadequate amount of hours of sleep. Interruptions of the sleep cycle is said to have account for many of the physiological illnesses experienced by individuals (Prather, Bogdan & Hariri 2013) and (Ratna & Sud 2008). The Restoration Theory developed by Oswald (1966) also emphasized the importance of sleep for the proper functioning of the body. The longer police officers prolong their time in the service their stress levels would have detrimental effects on them (Chaping, Brannen, Singer & Walker, 2008, p. 346).These severe effects can hamper an officer’s physical health because Selye (1936) exhaustion stage explains that this is when the body becomes exhausted and breaks down causing burnout. Additionally, officers who work longer hours including shift work are affected from the lack of sleep which also develop as stressors (National Institute of Justice, 2012).
