Instructional Technology: Plickers Game Analysis

-Assessing students, teaching reading skills to small groups of Kindergarten and 1st grade students, weekly data collection of progress and reporting to grade teacher and Principal of student improvement using Google Docs

This artifact is a virtual quiz using Socrative.com. I created a ten question quiz about animal adaptation that is appropriate for 3rd graders. With the creation of this quiz, I utilize the tools presented by Socrative. I had family members take the quiz in teacher mode where I was able to control the pace of the quiz and in student mode where they were able to take the quiz at their own pace. Also, I utilized the excel results to determine the effectiveness of the quiz. This artifact shows that I can “address the diverse needs of all learners by using learner-centered strategies providing equitable access to appropriate digital tools and resources.”

“There are over 600 single mothers in Bradford County” (Admin.). These women struggle daily with having to raise their children, having to work, and going back to school if they so choose. These women need a helping hand. With the collaboration of The Wise Ones, the What-a-Hoot-Tutoring-Program will be able to give them the help they need. This program will be a helping hand to single moms who have difficulties in their classes. The will be tutored in between their classes and this program will help them to go through school while being less stressed. The Wise Ones is a babysitting program for single moms who can’t find someone to watch their children while they go to class. After the moms drop off their children they have a choice to stay after their class to get extra help with the choice of a tutor. What-a-Hoot-Tutoring-Program is a great way to help single mothers succeed in school.

Formative assessment focuses on conducting how the student learns over time. Teachers test based on understanding and comprehending of the lesson such as; chapter tests or small quizzes. This third grade teacher uses review packets, chapter tests, bonus homework sheets, individual whiteboard sheets, and whole-class discussions. For example, if a child is learning about multiplication and has to apply the concept to a word problem, but has no concept in combing the lesson to solve the problem. This informs the teacher that the child doesn’t understand the lesson or needs to go back to change how it could be taught differently. These assessments shows the teacher whether the child understand the concept they are learning or whether the teacher needs to change her teaching. Summative assessment has a different goal towards the students’ learning at the end of a unit by comparing it against some benchmark score. This assessment focuses on the curriculum aspect on assessing the whole picture meaning the unit at the end of the lesson. The practicum teacher works on providing checklists, checking problems before moving on to the next problem, using hand signals, and writing in their math journals. Students enjoy using hand signals to answer the problem and use their individual white boards to personally solve the problem. There are a few benefits of using hand signals in the classroom. It explains different types of observations, ways to record your observations, and provides other ways to formatively assess students while they are learning. There are specific examples shown for what some assessments could look like and, specifically, how you can use post-it notes to help with your recording. The importance of this website for me is that it focuses on early childhood and I will be observing in a kindergarten class and plan to work with preschool aged students. Having visual examples of how to record my observations and effectively take not of my formative assessments will be an essential part of my teaching, and it will be a fast-paced teaching environment, to say the least. You brought a very interesting point to the table. Many times we focus on the students during elementary, middle school, and high school, but forget about the importance of continueing to engage studetns throught out college. I actually took a class that used clickers, which sound similiar to KeyPads. Since I was a very shy person, I was able to particpate in the activity and share what I did know through this type of technology, without having to stand up in front of the class. Now as a teacher, I use Plickers and Kahoots in order to increase the participation of students who are introverts. Intersting top ic and thank you for sharing.

Plickers assigns a code to a student and provides the student to namelessly provide its answer; Plickers is an app on the teacher’s phone , the teacher then scans the student's answers. The program then generates a graph of students scores it provides who got the answers correct or incorrect. Additionally, plickers helps decrease students copying each other’s answers. Plickers is a great tool to use for during and post assessments. Additionally, using plickers for quick checks for understanding to know if your students understand concepts and skills.

The first artifact I chose to include for Assessment for Administration and Instruction is the use of Plickers. Plickers is a way to collect data for a formative assessment from students without each student needing their own device. On the Plickers website, I printed out a set of 20 Plickers. Each Plicker is different, and each student in the class is assigned to a Plicker. When using Plickers in the classroom, a multiple choice or true/false question is projected on the board. Students hold up their Plicker with the letter they think is correct at the top of the page. Since all Plickers are different, students cannot see what answer their classmate is give. Formative assessments are unique in that they can be quick, do not necessarily have to be graded, and can be used as an ongoing way to check for understanding (Swearengin, 2002). I keep these considerations in mind when I implement quick exit tickets, ungraded activities, and various types of questioning. I check for understanding because it identifies the students that are struggling and the content that is posing problems for many individuals. In my opinion, many teachers have become too concerned with grades, rather than checks for understanding, and often forget that formative assessments do not have to create more work for the teacher. In fact, they assist the teacher in modifying and improving his or her instruction so that student achievement will increase (Wiggins, 2006).

When a teacher introduces the idea of formative assessment to a classroom, modifications may need to be made for it to work its purpose. The teacher might need to alter their teaching method and the student will need to be open to changing their learning style to accommodate the change. If both the teacher and students can achieve this, then formative assessment will be successful (al., C. E., 2016). If unsuccessful then formative assessment can be seen by both the teacher and student in a negative light. Games have a great educational value and can be used in the classroom to make learners use the language instead of just thinking about learning the correct forms. They involve students in the process of learning. Lee(1979) says that games are enjoyable and that the essence of games lies in the goal which is visible and stimulating, and that is, among other things, to improve one’s own performance. Because the activities in the class are interesting, learners look forward to their language lessons. Lee adds: “it’s hard to see any difference between ‘work’ and ‘play’ – there is a pleasant, informal, and often relaxed atmosphere, favourable to language learning… A language is learnt by using it – and this means using it in situations and communicatively” (Lee, 1979: 1).
